Hatter perked up, grinning as Loreta spoke. She could make breakfast? Pancakes and all that? He couldn't really remember if he had the proper ingredients but he intended to find out. When she lifted up to go freshen up and do morning things, he slid out into the kitchen and went about preparing some morning tea. He would set aside some coffee or something for her if she'd like that, but his main pursuit was to find breakfast makings.
Eggs, he had that... and ah! there was some mixings for pancakes as well! He liked pancakes! An actual home cooked meal! That was something he hadn't had in... well he didn't even know! At least he'd been smart and actually went shopping in anticipation that she might come over! Thinking ahead for once had actually proved helpful, as did the fact that he intended to hang around in Corvistowne until Loreta and he went on their little trip to The Woods.
When she returned to the room he would have set out as much as he could knowingly find of breakfast foods on the counter and would turn to her with a wide, excited grin. The tea had already finished and he held a cup of the richly scented breakfast tea in his eagerly tapping fingers.
"Is that enough to make a proper breakfast with, Lore?"

After a bit of freshening up and staring at her awful rotting appendage the heron managed to walk out of the bathroom. She was greeted by the eager Hatter. Taking a deep breathe and expecting the worse she entered the kitchen.
That really wasn't much at all. She raised an eyebrow and nodded anyway. "I can manage something with this, but next time I come over I'm totally bringing food with me so I can make homemade pancakes. Instant pancake mix just isn't the same." She smiled as she went through the cabinets for the proper pans and tools.
Humming she went to finding cooking spray and a variety of other things. After mixing the batter for the pancakes and prepping the pans with what she could find, she started to make both eggs and pancakes at the same time. It was so much easier to multitask when you had hands.
"How do you want your eggs Hatter?" she asked as she carefully began to crack one over the proper pan.

Hatter rubbed his neck bashfully and chuckled warmly. "Sorry, luv... I don't really, y'know, do much cooking of any sort. People like the food though, so if I know I'm going to stay in town for a few weeks or more then I try to buy some food and such." Loreta was lucky she'd been around while there was anything at all, usually he didn't go...but he had hoped she'd be able to make some use of it.
When she went to work, his eyes shone with interest and he found a stool so he could slide in to watch without actually getting in her way. "Scrambled!" He chirped up quite decidedly, leaning forward a little as he watched her multitask. He didn't grasp how people could be so very good at cooking, he always got distracted and ended up talking to people and getting distracted. It didn't hold his attention when he did it himself.
"How'd you learn to cook?"

Scrambled, great! She wouldn't have to fix two different eggs on one pan. She hummed happily as she began to crack the eggs and scramble them. Briefly she checked how the pancake was doing. After flipping it over properly Loreta responded to his question.
"I had to cook for all my siblings, five sisters, two brothers. Dad couldn't cook worth beans, and I was the only one in the family to take up the task after my Mom left. Even if I wasn't the oldest." She briefly cracked her fingers as she moved the eggs around on the pan. Almost done.
"When I was younger I honestly wanted to open a restaurant, but then I found out I would probably have to go to culinary school and all that. It was way too expensive for my family, and alone I could never make enough money to cover the cost." She shrugged, "So I became a messenger instead. The whole losing a leg and all helped I guess."
She paused to flip the pancake once again and scoop the eggs onto their proper plates. After neatly arranging everything on Hatter's play she offered it to him. Once he took it she slipped the scrambled eggs into her pancakes and created a breakfast roll of sorts. Butter and eggs usually didn't go well together, but she did like the taste.

Hatter was leaning forward on the stool, his feet hooked around the legs of it and his head tilted to the side in eager curiousity. He loved the smell of breakfast cooking! The avian's feet wiggled slightly and he nodded from time to time in thought. A big family then? That would make sense. 'Responsible' siblings always cooked meals for their siblings and always managed to be somewhat decent of really good. Was it being an only child that made him fail at it?
Probably not.
He wasn't very responsible about most things either, especially food.
Before he could continue to think on it he was being handed a plate and the Hatter burst into an even wider grin. "Thanks, luv!" He chirped happily before surrendering his tea in exchange for the plate. Without missing a beat he dug in to his meal, he took a few greedy bites before pausing for reply.
"Nn, a restaurant? That'd be very interesting, actually...and you're good... Very good." He took another happy bite, crooning a little with content. No one ever made him 'homemade' meals and he did enjoy them so much! When he remembered to eat, of course. In fact, his tendency to forget to eat was a good part of the reason why getting a decent meal meant so much. "Y'know, you got two legs and hands now... bet you could switch to a restaurant instead of the messenger service now."

Loreta snorted. "I'm afraid it's not that easy Hatter." She shook her head and took a seat besides him, taking a bite of her egg and pancake sandwich with a rather cheery smirk.
"Don't have the funds, don't have the business sense, don't have the degree, which leaves me with decent cooking and that's about it." She took another few bites of her breakfast. She really needed to cook more often, this meal was lacking a lot of heart. That or she was being a bit too self critical. Ha. She doubted that.
She finished up her pancake and eggs, and took her proper teacup. "I need to get going soon. I need to get a few things before we go on our trip. You know, like my actual money and such." She laughed a bit. At least she was in a good mood, lacked a major hangover and had no migraine. Just a stupid Lowlander leg and.... voices in her dreams. She'd never let anyone know about that.

Hatter nodded casually, stuffing his face between commentary. "True enough... Yeah." He took another bite, tapped the fork against his chin, and then nodded his head this way and that in thought.
"I could help with funds, but not business sense...or degrees. I'm sure I know someone with business sense, though... I don't really think that'd be of much help, would it?" He chuckled a little and shrugged carelessly, dropping the topic and moving on with his typical manner of ADD.
He finished up his own meal eagerly and exchanged the plate for his tea once more. If he was a cat he would've been purring with content. Except for the fact that she had to go again, that was a little disappointing... "Alright, Lore... I'll be ready when you are." Stretching slightly, Hatter hopped off his stool and slipped up to Loreta, promptly hugging her. "You're good now, yeah? 'N' if you need anything you know I'll be here...but you have to bring your own rum next time."

She couldn't help but grin. Hugging really wasn't her thing, but how could she honestly refuse a hug from such an adorable man. Oh wow. That was a horribly girlie thing to say. She rolled her eyes at herself before taking her leave.
--
Loreta knocked on his door. It had been a while since their trip to the Wood, but this wasn't about any of that. This was about something else that was entirely too pressing to ignore. It was enough that she actually needed to take a very long leave from work.
She put her hand on her stomach. God. She felt like crap because of this. Not to mention she would be the worst mother in the world. As soon as he opened the door she blurted out the first thing that came to her mind.
"Hatter, I'm pregnant and you're the father."
So much for subtlety....

As was usual for him when there was no one else around, Hatter was arched over his work bench with a cup of tea clasped firmly in hand. One hand sorted through this and that while the other held tight to the warm liquid. He was working on a rather special Slithey Tove and it wasn't coming out like he wanted it to...not at all.
His nose wrinkled in dismay and then...a knock sounded at the door.
Thank the suits for distractions!
He was on his feet in a heartbeat and hurried up to get the door. Pulling it open his eyes fell upon Loreta and he broke into a grin...that is, until she opened her beak and the grin fell straight to the floor. "What?!" If Hatter was the more theatric type, he would've fallen down dead. Instead he slumped against the door frame with the force of his surprise, which was probably theatrics enough. He made a few inarticulate noises probably to the effect of 'how' or 'I can't be!' and then, with a trembling hand, beckoned her inside.
He took a sip of tea, for his cup had yet to leave his hand, and gathered up his nerves. "Do you...know for sure?"
Hatter loved children, adored their company and all that...but when it actually came down to it...he didn't know how to be a father!
