If the woman had been using her Diamond charisma, she probably wouldn't have been quite so embarrassed. Or tripped. Or found herself tongue-tied simply because of how the man was looking at her.
No one had ever looked at her the way this strange Marshdweller-- Elias, she mentally corrected herself-- looked at her. Perhaps there was something stuck to her fur? She gave a swift, surreptitious glance down but couldn't see anything blatantly out of place. Sure, some spots of her fur might be brushed the wrong way after her run-in with the man, but there wasn't anything that should cause him to stare so.
His look, however, didn't seem to be mocking, it seemed. . . She didn't even know wot. But it made her feel nervous and jumpy.
"Well. . . yes, now. . . I've been here for a long time. It's. . . home now." She paused and for a moment she actually relaxed. "I do go to the library a lot. The Capital has some very nice ones." It was obvious where she felt safe and secure.

Ah, there’s something, thought Elias. Mention of the library caused her to open up a little, almost to blossom. A book lover, then. He was no slouch in that department, he liked to think. “I’d definitely like to pay them a visit at some point. I’m a bit of a reader, but my collection is pretty small, I’m afraid. Not much room, don’t you know. I don’t suppose you have a favorite subject?” He liked magic himself, as much as he touted physical prowess. And he’d gotten interested in mutations since his own odd condition.
She was cute when she talked about the library, and he almost told her, but had to remind himself that she might be taken by a very angry and very strong Card. He reminded himself that he was a Jack, but the fact of the matter was that he didn’t have a lot of magic to help out in a duel. He could perform guerilla warfare all day long, but no duels. He would have to learn some more magic, he decided. But that was for later.

They were likely a bit like two peas in a pod; Kel was aware of her abilities, but she would have trouble adjusting her magic for any sort of violence. Still, she was blissfully unaware of the meanderings of his thoughts, especially now that he had brought up one of her few true interests.
"Oh, I like to read about anything," her voice held hushed fervour and no sign of the potential loftiness or arrogance such a statement could imply. She well and truly loved books, literature, and all manners of the written word.
"It was very interesting researching about the telescopes and the genetics," she admitted softly, pale eyes distant as she recalled those instances of helping others in their work. "But I do enjoy reading books on banders, too. Then there's the histories and even some novels. Overall. . . I don't think I could pick just a single favourite." She sent him a soft smile and then seemed to abruptly recall herself, because she flushed a dainty pink and looked away. She strove to hide her further embarrassment at being so enthusiastic about books. "Ah, wot about you?"

“Well, I like reading for the sake of reading sometimes. There are some good stories to be read. Mostly I’ve focused on reading about magic. Of course, there’s not a lot that can be learned just by reading about it, but it lets me know what I might have to face some day. Of course, the really good information doesn’t always come from a book, am I right?” He grinned at her and winked. She was fun to mess with, all shy and timid.
He thought he might ease into the subject. “Not too terribly long ago, I started reading about chemistry and mutations. Books by the Corvistownians. Those vials of liquid that you see sometimes can do some crazy things, if the books are to be believed. Well, I can personally confirm that some of it’s true.” The grin faltered, but he didn’t want to get all serious, he wanted to keep things light. “I think you’re right, though, one of the signs of a true book lover is that they can’t just pick one favorite book, or one favorite topic. You think?”

Kelasia couldn't attest to all good knowledge not coming from books; most of the truly good and great things she had learned had come from within the pages of one. Still, she certainly didn't want to argue with the nice man.
She greatly enjoyed books by Corvistownieans; at least partially because so many of them seemed to be so entirely batty. It was wonderful! She loved how their idiosyncrasies came out in their writings. Still, he'd made a puzzling statement and she worried over whether or not she should ask for nearly half a block before softly voicing her question, "Something happened to you involving a vial?"
She surreptitiously glanced at him again; he looked perfectly normal to her. And rather rugged and more than a little handsome, even with that sardonic twist to his lips. She flushed again and stared steadfastly towards the ground as she waited for his reply.

Elias decided that this would be no better or worse a time than any to get down to the business of telling her about his “condition.” He still enjoyed it, and usually enjoyed the surprised and sometimes horrified looks on people’s faces when he revealed his taurness to them. With the exception of Whip, however, he hadn’t really run into anyone whose opinion mattered to him. He wondered why hers did? Because he liked her? Surely not. He didn’t like anyone. He thought.
“Well, back when I was an eight, I met a bunch of kids belonging to a friend of mine. Unruly bunch. The kind you keep away from the Courts because they’ll start a war or something. Well, one of them had a vial, and stuck me with it. Little brat. Something’s not right about that kid, I don’t know what for sure. Anyway, it caused a weird reaction, and instead of being a biped, I’m a Taur. I guess the best of both worlds, I don’t know. So when I’m trying to blend into the crowd, I usually avoid the form, because it makes me stand out a little. Go figure, right?” He braced for the rejection, deciding on some level that she wasn’t worth it if it came. None of them were.

Kel's ears flicked back in distress at his story, but not because of wot he had become; after all, she knew of one other 'taur in existence already.
"Oh, dear," she murmured softly as the man's face hardened suddenly. She wasn't certain wot had caused that reaction from him, but she really hoped it wasn't something she had done. Still, he seemed steeled for some sort of response versus just seeing how she reacted. That made her a little nervous to think about. Well, he had something in those dark eyes of his, but his voice seemed to continue on in a light, and easy-going manner. That reminded her of someone, but she couldn't recall who at that moment.
"Are you terribly displeased about your bipedal form?" she asked gently, sending him a concerned glance. "Perhaps we could find you a cure. . . ?"

Elias suddenly laughed explosively and possibly a little rudely at the question. She didn’t seem revolted, so he carried on. “No, no, it’s fine. Good for a little bit of fun if I want to shock a person, and I don’t lose my ability to pack things on my back. I may not fly through the trees like a monkey or anything like that. No, I think I like it quite a bit, to be honest. I just don’t like the reaction I get out of everybody, you know.” He stretched his neck, letting the tension out. She passed. For now.
“Yep, in some ways it’s an advantage, and I’m not just talking about being a packmule. People aren’t used to seeing a taur, don’t know how to react, and generally give me a wide berth and a lot of respect. That can mean a lot to a Club, depending on where you are.” Like the Court of Hearts, he didn’t say.
“Now, you keep getting me to talk, I’m sure you have some sort of dark secret you want to share with me now, right?” He seemed at ease once again. “What is it you like to do besides read, anyway?”

Kel couldn't help a small smile as he explained his reasoning, but it was tinged with a hint of sadness as well. He didn't seem to mind overly much, but she could definitely relate to the idea of not quite fitting in, even when you were supposed to. She kept her sigh purely mental, but that didn't stop the little stab of pain at her heart. She wanted so desperately to fully belong somewhere, and there just wasn't anywhere for her right now. She was at the Court, and it felt closer there, but she still didn't quite fit in with the others there.
The Court of Diamonds was a highly charismatic place; how could it not be? And little, shy, wallflower Kelasia stuck out like a sore thumb, even when she used her ability to fit in. She was much better off invisible anyway.
"Oh, uhm. . . besides read?" the tone to her words suggested her deep-set surprise and likely would foreshadow her next response. "I don't really do a lot other than read in my free time." Which was sadly lacking.
