Elias was trying to stay interested in the younglings exuberant monologue. Mnem was their Mommy, apparently? Mnem? Why did that sound familiar. That canine from the Capital? He spoke over Iphis' speech. "Now don't you look at me all snug, Whip, you're the one that got that crazy-" it was at that moment that the needle pierced his side, and he let out an old-man yelp.
He spun around, needle still in his side. He reached his mouth around and yanked it out. Empty. "What did you inject me with, you little &*$?!" Elias was certainly less than pleased. The liquid was feeling weird going into his veins. His legs were starting to feel a little funny, actually.
"I'm going to kick your little behind so hard that you're going to taste my toejam, kid. What kind of an outfit are you running here, Whip?" Man that smarted.

Eir surveyed the canine with disdain. He did not really care what kind of relationship he had with his father; the man was irritating. And if he expected some kind of apology for the injection, he was sorely mistaken. It was his own fault for not giving them something to do soon enough. Eir could not abide boredom. He would make his own amusement, and everyone knew that his amusement usually came at the expense of others. "You're not going to do anything, Grandpa."
Iphis tried to interject, attention on Elias: "Eir doesn't really mean it; he's just a little grumpy sometimes when you don't give him enough to do; I bet he just grabbed that from Auntie Minh and it's probably totally harmless--"
Eir concentrated on using his pain ability. Iphis made miserable noises and scurried away. He smiled unpleasantly at the older Marsh canine.
"I hope it makes your limbs fall off and your brain turn to ash."

Shinrai turned towards his son in vague surprise than took one step closer before turning just slightly and effectively and with a great deal of force whapped the boy with his tail. There was enough strength behind the blow to send the colt rolling.
"Evidently," the stallion said in a quiet, calm tone that certainly did not promise anything nice behind it. "Your mother is giving you too much rein." The man generally encouraged his brood to use their brains, but now it appeared that they weren't using it intelligently. "Because you refused to apologize, Elias can now beat that apology out of your hide. If you won't take this punishment as the consequences to your actions, I will even the odds so that Elias will have no trouble doing so." Subtext equalling this: if Eir decided to use his abilities in retaliation, then Rai would use his in kind.

"Your kids are growing up soft, Whip. It's that city living. Beating won't teach what doesn't have a foundation of hard work. I've got a better idea. All of you follow me."
Elias led the way to a stream about fifty yards from his cabin. His legs didn't hurt, and they weren't weak, they just felt really funny. It was almost like he'd slept on them wrong, but not quite the pins and needles. Really weird.
"Normally I can haul water to that garden of mine when I need to, but I'm really getting tired of that. So, here's what we're going to do. Everyone stand back."
He stood on the bank of the river, where the earth was nice and soft, and focused on the earth. It started slowly, but before long the earth was moving in waves, digging a hole down. The hole ended up being a few feet deep, and the water of the stream was partially diverted into it. The hole filled up with water little by little.
"Now, connect this to where I've got the hole started at the bottom of the hill, and make it deep enough so it doesn't overflow the sides. I figure two feet deep and two feet wide will be good enough. Square up the sides, and I'll shore them up later." He walked off to stand next to Rai. He held his tongue as he only did when very irked.

Eir looked at the hole in the ground as though it were a strange alien lifeform. They wanted him to dig. A ditch. Meaningless manual labor, a taxing of his strength. His father and his obnoxious friend wanted to...punish him. His ears twitched in irritation. No, this would not do at all.
He looked balefully up at his father, considering open rebellion, which would be extremely satisfying. But that would get him nowhere, really. He was confident that he could cripple the Elias fellow, but his father still had more power than he did. He looked back at the ground. Best to set about this task now, and exact vengeance later. His bastard father seemed fond of the old man, so Eir did not doubt he would have the opportunity. As for Father...
Well. There would be other times.
"I would be more than pleased," he said, slowly, "to do this task for you."

El watched to verify that the brat would listen to him. He wasn't opposed to slapping people around, but it was always different with their parents around.
"Let's move this into the cabin. I'll go over the maps while you explain to me why you brought the kids here," El said levelly. He still wasn't pleased. He doubted Rai planned on the kid having the needle, but it still made him mad. He wondered what Rai was doing to raise these kids and get them under control. He could understand the King being busy with court business, but surely there was someone to give the kids the sort of upbringing that El had given Rai himself. . .
Oh, no. Surely Rai didn't hope to dump all these kids off on old Elias. He looked the equine in his face. "Are you angling for something here, Whip?" He hoped he wasn't right, he didn't have the patience for these kids, he could already tell.

Triangular green ears flicked back in obvious amusement as a blatant grin painted across the other man's face. His children might not be overly aware of this ability, even now not many of them were paying attention to the two adults, but Elias knew of it and had even seen its use a time or two.
The equine wiggled his ears in further laughter, leaning back against a wall nonchalantly. "I'll be back to pick them up in about two weeks," the other Marshdweller admitted lightly. "Good luck, Elias; you'll need it."
To the sound of cursing, the green stallion faded from view, and echoes of laughter came through the brush and over the marshy water.
Ira trotted up to their new caretaker, green tail flicking lightly as he grinned up at the canine with a deceptively easy-going grin. "Are you our Mommy now?"
Further cursing growled from the cabin, and trotting swiftly away, Shinrai couldn't help another low laugh.
