The parcel sat on her desktop, the shape strange and yet exquisitely wrapped. Whoever had sent this to her, obviously wanted it to impress. It did, but she was both wary and intrigued about what might be inside. Sekhmet was paranoid by nature about anything she received. So far, she'd been generally well received by the Queen Rai and his servants, but that was simply the way they acted to her face, where she could hurt them. Behind her back, what was to say they didn't harbor ill will? And sending a parcel such as this would be a good way to go about delivering a message. No letter, no name, no way to ever find out who sent it.
However... just being near it made her hands flex in anticipation. What if it was just an honest gift of apprecition? Was she not very beautiful? Was she not strong and turning into one with the growing knowledge and understanding worthy of respect in the courts? Well then why would it be weird to have a gift from an admirer? Decidedly, she walked towards the parcel and fingered the silken wrapping tentatively. The ribbons seemed to unwind themselves in her hands and the silvered wrapping fell away like water flowing over her hands. So delicate and not at all unlike a flower. The sight before her made her gasp, a hand coming to her mouth in surprise.
It was a figurine, small and so intricately detailed that it was a mystery how so much paint came together on such a small, delicate object. The figure was of a bipedal canine maiden, beautiful and slender, holding up a tiny orb. Wait, no... she wasn't holding it, it was Hovering. She leaned down to glance beneath, and no jet of air, no strange device caused this orb to float. It was magical, and moved of it's own means. Curiously, she touched the orb, moving it out of place, just in time to hear a high pitched whine coming from the canine herself. Did that truly just happen? She took a step back, her eyes wide, but sparkling with a curiosity she could not hide. Who had sent this beautiful piece of mystery?
She came closer and studied it for a series of moments before smiling almost affectionately, and placing it upon her nightstand. It was really the only empty space she had right now, and it quite complemented the boquet of flowers there. Moving away from the bed, she left to go speak to His Majesty about a certain business arrangement that had not been completed before and probably wouldn't be until sometime in the evening. Sighing, she left the room and closed the door behind her, the sight of the figuring imprinted in her mind.
------
Her hands fumbled at the door she was so eager to return and observe the beautiful canine statue, and when she opened the door, she swung it shut with a slam. Her eyes immediately sought the maiden and she was surprised to realize she had half expected it to not be there upon her return, for whatever reason. She paused in mid-step however, wings fluttering as a sign of her discomfort when she noticed something in the dimness. The eyes... they were glowing an eerie soft emerald green, had they always been glowing and she'd just not noticed until now? Her steps forward slowed significantly and she shook a hand in front of it as if it would respond.
The doe laughed out loud at herself when nothing happened, however. "Well if the aim was to spook me, it seems whoever sent this has their work cut out for them." She mused to herself quietly, crossing her arms and considering the statue once more. When she'd relaxed, she slid into bed and tried to keep her mind off of the petite canine perched so near to her. The glowing eyes kept her up, however, and she had to turn its gaze away. So, perhaps she was a little spooked still.
-----
In the stillness, a small bipedal canine began to sway and shake, as if in a dance... this stopped immediately when the owner of this strange gift awoke, however.
Her dreams were interrupted? Or had she been dreaming at all? Her eyes felt heavy, which meant she hadn't slept even near long enough. So then why had her body floated back from the unconsciousness of her sleep? She tried to stay still, to wait for the tiredness to reclaim her, but for some reason she felt as awake as if she'd just jogged around the block when she hadn't moved a muscle. Opening her eyes, she glanced at the ceiling and sighed. Normally, she would say she'd never been one to get insomnia, but it happened to everyone after a while. She rolled onto her right side and froze, mid-movement. The figurine... she'd turned it away because she couldn't sleep, hadn't she? Yes she had, those eyes had kept drawing her attention back and now...
Sekhmet... They were looking at her. It had turned its head, to look at her.
"What in the...?" She began to move back and found she couldn't move, as if the canine had entranced her somehow. I have chosen to bestow upon you great power. I have been in the posession of many over the centuries, but none have been worthy of my gift, until now. Use it well.. The doe listened to the words which rang in her ears with a dreamlike quality which seemed to fit in perfectly considering the previous day's events. She was about to ask a question when the orb floating above the canine's hand began to move of it's own accord, soaring distinctly towards her. She was caught, ensnared, couldn't move.
The orb seemed to slide through her skin like a ghost, and she could amost feel the light coursing through her, heading for a strange destination. The destination was found within a second, and her hand came up to clutch her chest in surprise. It was there, touching, holding, wrapping about her... her heart. Somehow she just knew, it was encasing her organ from the inside and the pain told her a change was taking place. It wasn't intense as it would have been for someone who was not a heart, she assumed, for she was able to endure the whole process with only a grunt of discomfort and pain here and there.
"It's not beating..." She whispered to herself, her eyes wide with terror. Was she going to die? She took a breath... somehow, she took a breath? The air came in through her lungs and out again, she hadn't died yet. The blood in her veins hadn't ceased flowing, and yet... her heart didn't beat? Glass... the figurine whispered, drawing her attention back to it just as it began to melt as if made of ice. Glass? What was glass? Oh god... her heart... was made of glass?
Continuing to panic, she began stalking across the room, her pace slowing more and more, a strange weight taking hold of her body. Her hand reached down to massage the muscles in her leg curiously, and was only met with a shimmering, hard substance. Silver patches consumed her body, immobilizing her wings and making her feel so very heavy. She cried out once before using the silvered ends of her finger tips to explore this strange body she was trapped in. Her mind was spinning a mile a minute, and unexpectedly, everything went dark.
-------
Every fiber on her body ached. The floor was an unforgiving mistress. But why wasn't she in bed? Oh right, that strange dream... She listened in the silence for the heartbeat that never came, and jolted into an upright sitting position, her head in her hands, her nice... regular, furred hands. She wasn't made of silver anymore? So... it could be turned on and off at will... a new power? But why? What had she done to deserve something so... so.... unusual, and special? Where horror had been before, a soft wonderment took its place. She had best inform the Queen at once of this... new development. He might want to arrange to have her checked out. Her hand stayed above her chest, waiting for the motion that would never come.
Finally, she picked herself up off the floor, not even caring if she looked like a mess, and headed for the door...
