Gah. That had described his day so far. He was the lead accountant for the court of diamonds and he got very little thanks for such a job. In fact his Queen was quite snarky with him as of late. He hadn't the slightest idea why, he just knew he was out on "business" today. His apprentice could deal with the numbers for now, he would double check all of the work when he came back. His children were safe, thankfully, and he had nothing to worry about today. That was a blatant lie, but he didn't exactly care enough today. He was at the end of his rope. The next person who was kind enough to provoke him would get more than an earful. He strolled down the street, getting various quick glances from people who scurried away. Being a Jack sometimes had disadvantages when it came to respect, he didn't like the thought of people being intimidated by him, but he didn't like being walked on either. Politics could go to hell today. He wanted to have some sort of chance meeting, something fun. Something different, that was what he wanted. He wanted an equal who wasn't a snarky bastard. "Good luck with that," he muttered. He just hoped to run into someone today rather than brood over all that had gone wrong.

Maxwell strode confidently down the streets of the Capital City, still glancing wonderingly at the Eight upon his chest every now and then. He'd worked a particularly late night, and when he woke up the next morning he'd felt...strangely refreshed, as if he'd slept for hours and hours on end and finally caught up with all of the sleep he'd been missing, and when he looked at himself in the mirror, he'd nearly tripped over his own paws to see a regal eight where before had only been a lowly two. Idly he sent up yet another prayer of thanks to whomever had ensured that great fortune for him, and then sniggered to himself as he wondered if that "whomever" was getting awfully crowded, considering how many times he'd thanked them. And that was just this morning! Walking through the Capital was yet another bit of strangeness for him, no matter how many times he'd done it before - this time, instead of being sneered at for being little better than an Ace, he was respected, treated as an equal by all of those who came his way! He made sure to send one of his trademark charming smiles at whatever low-rankers he saw though, encouragement in every line of his darkly-furred body. He'd made it up from a Two - they'd be able to do the same thing! Up ahead he caught sight of a Jack as he made his own way along, the lowest of the face cards but still higher than most others here. Maxwell, figured that he'd never want to be anything more than a Jack, at most. Probably stick with being a Ten, if he ever got that high. Anything higher sounded like it might be too much of a pain to deal with... At least, if the cloud that was resting over the head of the Selkie Lakes bird was anything to go by. Though he had to admit that those glasses were absolutely charming, to the point where the flirt within him wanted to pull them down the beak a ways and then plop a kiss right where they'd rested before. ...but that was the tease in him, nothing more. ...really.

Theofilus couldn't help but feel like he was being watched. He scanned the crowd of various busy people noticing a rather upbeat looking feline. He couldn't help but notice the expression of sheer joy plastered on his face as he seemed to glance at the bird.
This made Theofilus curious enough to investigate. He redirected his path towards him, or at least passing depending on the reaction he got from a greeting. Theo had no real idea if this would be classified as flirting or simple small talk. He didn't actually care at the moment, he just wanted a distraction from the ranks and politics that filled daily life. Enjoying a day for the company was a plan he could understand.
He slowly passed the feline saying, "You seem to be enjoying your day, What's your secret?" It was a silly question, but he could only hope for an equally silly answer.

Maxwell wasn't just upbeat, he was dangerously close to bursting into song, the rest of the people walking along the streets be damned. Yes, he'd get weird looks, but he was used to them. Most people saw a cheerful Torquehelmian and thought, "The poor boy, he's just trying to act like he's in a good mood. There aren't any truly happy people from Torquehelm, you know. They're all so dull and dreary." But that didn't matter to him. He was happy, and he was upbeat and cheerful, and none of it was an act. If anyone attempted to make him act like those depressed ingrates back home, then they could just kiss his furry little rump, and lick his chain for good measure.
When he was actually approached by the bird he'd noticed before, he couldn't help but toss him a smile that was half roguish grin, half flirtatious smile.
Slut.
The observation and question, on the other hand, prompted a laugh of sheer good temper, and the smile relaxed to something far more friendly. Gesturing at his chest and at the prominent red marking there, he cheerfully said, "I was a Two last night!"
[ooc: And I've got that one song from Oliver and Company running through my head right now, influencing Maxwell's attitude. "Why should I worry? Why should I care?" etc. *grin*]

( OOC: holy crap you're fast *leaving for the movies in five or so minutes* let's see what I can do?) That was a fantastic reason to be happy. "My heavens," Theo said taken a back, "You should have a party for a great accomplishment like that!" This man was obviously truly happy, though that grin made Theo think something else entirely. He would leave that thought in the gutter where it belonged. "Let me properly introduce myself to you then, I'm Theofilus," he smiled. Not need for a title outside of the court on a fun day. "Once you properly introduce yourself, I should probably take you somewhere to celebrate for spontaneity's sake." The sparrow winked. Hell this was exactly what he needed, being nice to a random stranger on the street who was already in a better mood than he was. Perhaps it would rub off? It didn't really matter. It wasn't every day you met someone who jumped in ranks that far. Now would a complete stranger accept a completely random invitation? That was a curious question, indeed.

[ooc: *grins* Just...feeling inspired, I suppose. ^_^]
It was indeed a fantastic reason to be happy. Not only had he gone up a rank - he'd gone up six. And in a really short time too! (Overnight happens to be damn short.) So Maxwell preened happily under the praise, as he figured that he quite deserved it. Then his attention caught on the suggestion that the sparrow had put forth, purple eyes sparkling with anticipation. "Oooh, a party...Aye, that could be a lot o' fun indeed!"
Finally his attention returned to the Jack, instead of focused on whatever nefarious thoughts he'd been thinking, for it was undoubted that he'd been thinking of something. "The name's Maxwell! I work over in Corvistowne for Ophelia at th' moment, though I'm no real chemist," he explained cheerfully. He figured that Theofilus had some sort of job in the Court, doing...whatever it was that face Cards did.
"That'd be awfully kind of ye, but you won't catch me complaining!" he said in response to the offer. If Theo wanted something random to do, Maxwell was perfectly willing to go along with him. He'd even be polite and offer to pay his half of the bill when the time came. Glancing around, Maxwell oriented himself and thought out a few paths to nearby restaurants, but didn't put any of them forward. If it was going to be his new friend's treat, then he could pick as well. "I'm up for anything, so if there's any place in particular ye like?"

"I only know of good places to take a date, and I highly doubt we want that," Theofilus said, preventing himself from rolling his eyes. He could never see himself on a date with a man, even if they were a particulally pretty man. He would probably have to be drunk. Very drunk.
"It's your celebration after all, I'm simply picking up the tab Maxwell. I'm a rather boring fellow, so you'll have to pick some place fun for yourself or at least interesting for anyone." It was the awful truth of the matter. Partying was far beyond Theo's realm of understanding. He had fun when he was plotting payment plans and double checking numbers. He also read books, that was his idea of a celebration.
Well there was that one time. But that was a completely different situation. Almost. If he were pressed he could have some spontaneous fun, but he was far from pressed.
"It's quite the occasion you should go all out."

(( Open means you can haz Kel? ^.~ Also, i don't know Rogers' colour b/c i'm lazy. ^^;;; Cheating for now. <3 ))
The Sorgaire Range skunk felt... odd. Restless and not entirely herself. Her tail twitched and she just couldn't concentrate on the rows of numbers. She stared off towards nothing and didn't even notice when Rogers popped his head in to ask about an account. The Shepherd smirked when he saw her distracted expression. She was obviously useless inside right now.
"Kel, I need you to run an errand for me." He was rewarded with the skunk's abrupt start of fright, and he showed his teeth in a large grin. Oh, yes, she was nowhere near the shop mentally. A run around town would be good for her. And a run-in at the destination even better. "Drop off the packet of papers on the front counter at the address written on front, okay? There's a map on top if you need it."
"Okay," her hesitation was in her voice, but Rogers walked off before she could argue with him. Kel sighed and rose quickly to pick up the papers.
In a matter of minutes she was on the street with the small map in front of her nose as she tried to memorize it before putting it away and moving somewhat quickly through the roadways. It wasn't long, however, before she ran into a crowd and, as usually happened, the skunk was disoriented. Her head turned one way then the next almsot frantically as she tried to find out where she was and that's when she spotted him.
Just off to the side and talking to some dark feline she, unsurprisingly, didn't recognize. But there was refuge right there and she made a bee line for the one person she knew here.
It might seem like she magically appeared, the blues and greys creature with a satchel slung across her neck. A few steps away, Kelasia flushed deeply and stumbled to a stop. Wot if Theofilus didn't want to talk to her now? She'd never really talked to him in front of other people other than Rogers. Hesitation stopped her from calling out and she dropped her head before biting her lip uneasily, unable to make herself go forward the last few steps.

Or perhaps he could be graced by the presence of a lovely lady who seemed to be in distress. "Kelasia?" The sparrow exclaimed questioningly. Hopefully he didn't take Maxwell off guard, but he didn't seem like a person to be easily phased.
Wait a minute. Wasn't she supposed to be at work? Or at least, why was she out here of all places? The sparrow couldn't imagine she would be out on her own will. Rogers had sent on her on an errand then? That still didn't explain much.
"Maxwell! Meet a good friend and coworker of mine, Kelasia," Theofilus gestured towards the skunk with a smile on his face. "Since we have a third party she can always choose a place for a party and might as well join us. Unless she's too busy--" he looked to Kel, "--I can't imagine Rogers have a problem with you relaxing."
After all, Theofilus was the boss and Rogers didn't usually protest when he had final say in the matter.

Kel flushed deeply as Theofilus noticed her, even though that was wot she wanted. But suddenly she was being added into a party? She could only pray that Theofilus wasn't serious about her choosing a place to go; the sparrow -should- know that she still didn't know this area all that well. She went to wotever places Theo or Rogers introduced her to and didn't venture to new places. Ever.
She was also still notoriously indecisive, though she was trying to work on that with her new rank. And for Theo. Her head came up and she gave a small nod, though she had to put in softly, "I'm supposed to make a delivery, but I got lost."
She pulled the map out of her satchel to show it to Theofilus. For one well-used to the twists and turns of the Capital City, it was obvious that the final destination was the Palace.
