"The problem is getting good, hard workers to go to the Lowlands." He tapped his talons on the glass. "Who would be willing to work a land that only seems to produce disease, famine and misery?" Theofilus didn't know a living soul that would be to walk into the Lowlands a promise of free land to work or not.
The whole place seemed pretty hopeless. Then again, most of societies' problems weren't cut and dry. It would take years to solve any problems that were at the top of Theofilus' to do list. Probably life times after him. He could try to open a door, but who would go through it.
"Are you enjoying the Court Life? You've certainly changed a lot since the last time we spoke. Also, if there's anything else you would like to drink or eat I'd be more than willing to call room service." Even though Theofilus did prefer to prepare his own tea, he couldn't blame the equine if he wanted something else besides tea.

"Don't underestimate the common worker," the stallion replied to the sparrow's first statement easily, though there was something lying beneath the easy-going mask. "I know plenty of people who would sell their children for a chance to get some land of their own, Lowlands or not."
He tried to mask the unease he felt at that statement. He didn't look away, but there was a moment where it seemed something was lurking behind the grey-green eyes; a hidden and dark truth that wasn't meant for the light of day. Rai loved kids a bit too much to do that to any of them, especially none of his own, but it seemed to hit some sort of mark.
The stallion gave a small shrug as Theofilus changed the subject. "It is the Court of Hearts. It will be wotever it wants to be." He seemed, at least, greatly amused by the statement. "And the tea is fine." That was something he had definitely gotten used to saying for Queen Serafino. "And it'd be more accurate to say that you have changed a great deal." His ears flicked back in some amusement as his eyes dropped briefly to the bird's rank.

Selling your children for land? That was a horrible though that Theofilus would leave exactly where it was. He did not want to think that people would do something that horrible to their own flesh and blood.
He glanced down at his own mark. Well he had changed, but he still wasn't sure if it was for the better or not. "Yes, I suppose I have changed a bit. Sometime soon, I hope, there will be more changes to come. Until then I have to sit back and do paper work in courts, and thankfully I still have enough time to take care of my Shipping Firm."
When had he grown so attached to his business? He buried the thought for a moment as he took a long sip of his tea. The sparrow was generally happy that the topic of conversation was a bit lighter, though it would probably change somewhere along the line. "Do you still have that touring agency?"

Theofilus did not seem to like the idea of people selling their children. Well, it's not like that was surprising! Rai gave a mental snort. He himself did not like the idea, even if he knew that it happened. Still, neither of the men seemed wont to linger on that particular subject and it slipped away under more mundane topics.
He was pleased to hear that Theofilus still kept his hand in his shipping business; he felt a business owner was obligated to keep an eye on their work just to be certain that the employees kept everything up to standards. Theofilus likely had the same sort of situation that he had, however; Rai knew he could trust Elias explicitly. Anything the canine couldn't handle-- which was a very rare instance, indeed-- he'd immediately send off to Rai to take care of. The stallion was fairly certain that Rogers did the same thing for Theo. "How is the shipping firm?" he asked nevertheless.
"I do still have my agency," the stallion said quietly, though there was a thrum of pleasure in the undertone of his voice. Though... unless they got some new workers in there, it would fold. That was a troubling thought.

"Fantastic. Nothing has gone wrong, and no one has bothered to withhold payment from us, we're making new connections everyday. Everything is actually running smoothly for once in a long time. I'm just waiting for something to explode," The sparrow snorted as he picked his tea up. Oh yes, when everything went well something just had to go wrong and smack him in the face. Life was wonderful like that.
"Oh? How is that going? You seemed to love your work. How how is that friend of yours?" The sparrow refilled his cup. The sparrow was used to idle chit-chat. He did work in the Court of Diamonds after all. You had to keep up your appearances all too often. Plus it was nice not talk about such serious matters.
Then something dawned on him. "Do you have children?" Theofilus had absolutely no idea if the horse did or not. They had been talking about children previously so it seemed like an appropriate comment at least.

Rai gave a low, appreciative laugh; if anything the sparrow had ever said was true, this was it. "They do have the penchant for blowing up at the most inopportune times, don't they?" he mused in response before moving on to answer the other man's questions.
"Unfortunately, I haven't had much of a chance to go out into the Marsh anymore, but El is doing fine. As always." He rolled his eyes slightly and gave a small snort. Elias would do well no matter wot was going on; he had a very high survivability rating.
Something slipped through those grey-green eyes again when Theo asked about kids, but the equine's response was just as light-hearted and easy-going as ever. "Not yet, but they're on their way."
He might not be a charismatic Diamond, but he -had- been running a tour guide business for a long time; he was well-versed in the art of small chatter. "How are your children? Is Mori doing all right?" He still remember the night he'd found her so sick he'd been afraid she might die. It perturbed him greatly.

"Exploding business matters should be a novelty item sold in joke shops, because someone somewhere along the line gets a kick out of it," Theofilus commented idly as he took another sip of his freshly poured tea. Ah yes, the Courts did like to prevent people from going home. As close as the Court of Diamonds was to his home region, and Rai's actually, he had yet to travel "home." Actually he was probably avoiding it.
"I'm glad to hear that he's doing all right. He seemed like a very interesting fellow." That was an understatement, but he wasn't about to say anything more on the subject. "And congratulations. Children are always a joy."
When they behave but that was another matter. The sparrow perked at the mention of his daughter's name. She had mentioned meeting Shinrai before, though she did leave out a lot of the details. "She's doing better. Now that she had a proper doctor and someone helping her with flight, she's doing much better than before. She still worries me though--but I don't think that will ever change."

"Thank you," the equine answered with a small smile. Rai had always like children, and he was fairly certain that would hold true with those of his own flesh and blood as well; he was not, however, in the least bit certain of Mnem's mothering capabilities, especially not with her rather hostile reception whenever he came near their apartment. He had offered to set her up somewhere a little nicer, but, for a pregnant woman, the canine still moved -very- quickly. At least all of his bandages were gone now, even if he did have to rely on Aderlass to keep him updated.
The less he kept Elias in conversations, the more the Marshdwelling dog liked it. Elias was a bit paranoid about people knowing a great deal about him-- a trait Rai just might have picked up-- so the stallion did not let the conversation linger on his partner.
"That's excellent to hear," he referred to Mori's condition. "She seemed incredibly frail. I hope I have a chance to see her again someday."
Too many children bumped briefly into his life in some sort of danger and then whisked away again. It was worrisome and he felt another moment of worry for the boy he had once met before he carefully locked it away again. Still no leads on that front.

Theofilus smiled, "She would love to see you again I'm sure. I can give you her address if you like. I imagine a letter from you would make her happy and then you could set up a meeting if you wanted to." He loved his children, and was terribly over protective of his daughters, but that never stopped them from having lives of their own. Mori had more than once scared him senseless.
"Actually she's been thinking of opening a flower shop when she's a little older. I hope she does, I think she'd enjoy it." He said with a small sigh. His children were growing up and he had no idea what to do with himself. Why couldn't they just stay little forever?
"I feel like I'm old sometimes, I swear," He shook his head, "I hope you spend as much time with your children as possibly can. When they grow up you'll miss the moments when they were adorable and innocent."
