Silvanus had wretched at least 3 times. It was not a surprising reaction for a young child, seeing as his entire world had been turned upside down with the news that Monsters did exist. The fear was intense, and he refused to even leave his bed, which left a mess next to his bed every time his stomach decided to flip. Cerynitis would come in promptly to clean it up, so that the smell didn’t cause more sick to be spilled everywhere, and urged him to try to get out of bed. Silvanus wouldn’t budge. She was filled with regret, the first sign of true sadness Silvanus had seen since his father’s leave.
His vomiting and the rain were the only noises that broke the silence that day had brought. The white noise of the rain seemed to vanish and it was almost like he was the only person left in the entire world. It was utterly surreal. Not even the local wildlife seemed to be making any noise. There was suspense to it, and Silvanus couldn’t help but feel that soon an anvil would fall. There was a part of him that wanted it to, to crash the silence and restore peace to his hometown. Just have it be over with. Even as a child, however, he knew that the anvil would not come without a price. He could never have imagined just at what cost.
It was getting dark and Silvanus still had not risen from his bed. In his utter terror, the birthday had been completely forgotten. Well, to him anyway. Cerynitis had not forgotten, and indeed, as much as Silvanus had been spending the day stressing about him, Cerynitis had been spending the day worrying about finding some way to cheer the boy up. Trying to come up with some way in which she could salvage the birthday that had gone so horribly wrong. The thought had occurred to her to make a cake, as Silvanus seemed to have a rather large sweet tooth. A fact that often made her wonder why he wasn’t rotund. However, when she had gone to the cupboards, she realized that she was missing some key ingredients, and her one solid idea had been thrown in the garbage.
Cerynitis had the kind of determination that would only later show up down the line in the form of Severus. Despite her own fear and the knowledge that what she was about to do was extremely risky, not to mention stupid, she could not shake her will to somehow have this day pull through. She would go to the marketplace, and get her son a cake. She had to, she had convinced herself. But with this decision came a rather dangerous dilemma. She would by no means be taking Silvanus with her, as he was much safer in the house. The question was, should she go to the bakery with Officer Brady leaving Silvanus in the house, or should she sneak away so that Brady didn’t demand to go with her, so that he could continue guarding the house and Silvanus? It was a hard choice, but the answer was clear.
”Mommy…where are we going?” Silvanus said almost in a panic as Cerynitis scooped him up and carried him off to the bathroom. She let him down upon arrival, and promptly went over to the tub.
”Mommy…what’s going on?” he said, getting more worried with the lack of answer.
His mother put a finger to her mouth and pointed in the direction of the front door, before going back to the tub, which she was slowly filling with water. Her head would come up from time to time, to look out the window and see how dark it was getting, and how much rain was coming down. When the tub was finally full she indicated for Silvanus to approach her, and he did. She picked him up and placed him inside.
The water was extremely warm, almost…to warm, but Silvanus was to confused to complain about the temperature. Finally his mother spoke to him, ”Don’t leave this tub ‘til I come back, understood?” Her words were strange, like orders, it made him anxious.
”Where are you going?” he said while grasping on to her arm as she reached for the soap.
”Don’t worry, sweetie. Mommy is just going out.”
His eyes grew wide and he grabbed on harder, ”But he is out there!”
”You will be safe here. Just take a bath, make sure you don’t smell at all. He is said to be blind, and only sees with smell and sound. If you are real quiet and stay in the water, you’ll be ok.” She managed to pry his hands off her arm and hand him the soap. ”I’ll be back sooner then you think.” and with that she left, not giving Silvanus any time to say anything.
Silvanus looked at the closed door for some time, before he accepted the fact that he was going to be in the tub for a while. He began scrubbing, as if his very skin were dirt itself, silently watching as outside turned darker…and the rain poured down harder.
