Silvanus did as his mother instructed. He continued to stay in the tub. The water was white with soap, and still he scrubbed his entire body. The water by now was cold, nearly ice cold, and he shivered slightly as he sat in the water. He could easily have changed it, let it drain then refill it with warm fresh water. But that would require making noise, and as determined as his mother was to leave, so was he to not make noise. He just…wished with all his heart that she would come soon, that Officer Brady or one of the other guards would spot him and kill him. Anything to have things go back to normal. But they never would.
The silence and white noise of the rain was broken quite suddenly by the sound of the front door breaking open. Silvanus panicked, quickly ducking under the surface of the water, to scared to make a sound. Under the water he quaked, more scared then he had ever been in his entire life. He couldn’t open his eyes, as the water had way too much soap in it from hours of scrubbing. He was in darkness, and now the silence was more then it had been before. It was complete. He couldn’t hear anything…feel anything….but his heartbeat, and the ice cold of the water that completely enveloped him. He was completely alone, in the cold, dark silence.
His lungs begged for air, begged and begged until he couldn’t hold it any longer. He tried his hardest not to make a noise, but his lungs quest for air would not allow it, and he broke the surface of the water with a loud splash, his mouth gasping for air, his arms extended out as if attempting to cling to it. Panic coursed through him, but no longer because he could not breath previously, or the fact he had made noise. The first thing that assaulted his ears upon breaking the surface of the water, was a lot of yelling.
”Stupid bitch…What did she think she was doing out alone??? Didn’t you fucking tell her not to leave the house without you?” an angry man seemed to say, sounds coming from the living room.
”Well, yes I did, Sir…but…I don’t know why she left…” came the familiar voice of Brady, who seemed to be trying to calm the other man down. Sounds flooding into his ears alerted him to more then just the two speaking in the room. He couldn’t move despite his curiosity.
”And why the hell did she have a cake with her? Lot of fucking good that did her!”
”Sir…I really wish you wouldn’t curse, it’s not helping the situation. She said she had a son…maybe it was for him.”
”Oh fucking Suits! She’s got a kid? Where the fuck is he? The last thing we need is for her to have taken him with her. We don’t need a half dead rape victim AND a dead kid. The Sheriff is going to rip off our dicks...”
Now Brady was upset, ”Sir, that is quite enough! You may be my commanding officer, but you obviously can’t handle this situation properly! The threat is gone…”
”Yeah for now! Where the fuck did He go after Charlie shot him?”
”Step down…He was shot in the neck, we know he isn’t smart enough to heal himself, it’s only a matter of time. It doesn’t matter where he went. The important thing, as you mentioned, is to find the kid. Can you possibly calm down and watch over this procedure while I search the house?”
”Your ass is on the line for this…”
”I’m fully aware.”
With that the argument seemed to subside, and the sounds of others became clearer, though exactly what they were doing or saying, Silvanus couldn’t make out. He didn’t know what was going on and he was in shock. He was gone now? Mom had gotten him a cake? Was that why she went out? What had happened to her? Was she going to be all right?
It was only a couple moments later before the German Shepard finally found him, sitting pathetically in the bathtub, shaking like a leaf. Brady shouted out to the people in the other room that he had found “The kid”. He took a towel, and wrapped it around Silvanus, lifting him out of the freezing water simultaneously. Silvanus allowed himself to be handled…to cold and scared to protest. Brady then took him to his room and laid him in bed with the towel.
”What happened to mommy?”
The man looked deeply uncomfortable, but at length finally put a pawed hand on Silvanus’ shoulder. ”She’ll be alright, she was just….roughed up a bit…”
”You are lying.” he said, his tone becoming angry. “Half dead” didn’t really sound like she was going to be all right.
Again, Brady’s eyes took on a soft look. He was genuinely sorry for this kid. The truth was…they weren’t sure she was going to make it. But how could you tell a kid that? How could you tell a kid about rape? He patted Silvanus’ shoulder and stood up, as if to say…that he couldn’t say anymore. He left the room. Silvanus’ eyes streamed tears. He had so many questions, and none of them looked like they were going to be answered.
Just when it occurred to Silvanus to go check what was happening with his mother, Brady showed up at the door again, this time…a plate in hand, a rather large one. He scratched the back of his neck with a paw, something that seemed to resonate with Silvanus. On the plate, was half a cake…and it was crumbling.
”Silvanus is your name?” he asked in an awkward fashion as he entered into the room. Silvanus didn’t answer, sadness and anger overwhelming him. Again, the canine scratched the back of his neck.
”You’re mother had this near her…This is the only part I could really salvage. I’m sorry…it’s a bit…waterlogged.” he laughed nervously, but Silvanus just looked away, he didn’t really feel in the mood for cake, or polite chat. Brady seemed to catch the drift, and left the remaining cake on the bedside table.
Silvanus didn’t look at the cake until he heard the closing of the door. It was a white cake, in seriously pitiful shape thanks to the rain, and whatever other events had unfolded. The frosting was white, with green trim, his name swirled in a light blue color. That was all it said…though he was sure that before it had been destroyed it said something like: Happy Birthday Silvanus!
Half of the cake began to slump, and slowly the weight pulled it apart, splitting his name down the middle.
