Weeks had turned into months and months were beginning to look like years. Darrien paced the floor; he did not know what to do. Things were getting more and more complicated. With the way things were looking in the business and it seemed that he would be taking over this branch entirely, they city was booming and so was the business. Over all things were looking very well except for one thing…Tuuli. His father had sent a letter asking about their engagement, and while Darrien was still suppositious, being around Mnem, was starting to change all of that. He had begun to realize that some times things were not predestined in the way that he had grown up to believe. That maybe he had a little more of a hold on his own life than he though. Some times this thought scared him and he wondered what he would tell his father. Could he call off the engagement? Would the village shun him? Would his father disown him? Time was running out and he had to act soon.
He stopped pacing, sat down at his desk and put his head in his hands. He wanted to see Mnem and the children that he had come to think of as his own. What would Mnem do? He wondered to himself. He knew what she would do and he just could not be that blunt to Tuuli. Slowly he lifted his head, pulled out a piece of paper and began to write.
He wrote into the wee hours of the morning and until his arms and hands were stiff and sore. When he was finally done, there were two letters, one to his father and the other to Tuuli. Both of the letters explained his regret to his father and to Tuuli that he could no longer go on with the engagement. They did not explain exactly why only that he had to start listening to his heart in order to be happy. He implored forgiveness from them both and hoped that some day they would both understand. To his father he also stated that he would accept what ever would come of this and that he was ready to take charge of his own life and become a real man. He placed both letters in envelopes and addressed them to the corresponding recipients. He walked down stairs and placed them in the pile of mail that was to go out in the morning.
It was about three weeks later when he received a reply from his father. Darrien sighed as he read the letter and walked up the stairs of the shop. Everything happened as he thought that it would. He began to pack his things and grabbed the pouch of money he had been saving, glad that he had done so. All he had to do now was talk to Mnem and well start over from scratch, but he was free, and even though part of him was sad to have lost the family he had ever known, another part of him was happy at what he was gaining…freedom.
