[This is a rather large glimpse into Anastasia's past, I hope you enjoy!]
It was a night just like any other that brought the velvet Doe to her Jack's personal chambers. She'd heard him rustling about from down the hall and knew his insomnia was getting the best of him again. It was no surprised to her to see the elderly gentleman fiddling in his black laquered cabinet for the hidden drawer which held his sleeping pills. She was the only one who knew about them, or so she thought, he tried very well to keep his condition hidden so as not to worry any of the other Does.
A sad smile touched her features as she strolled in and pounced up onto the Queen size bed, draped in more silk than she'd ever seen on one surface at one time. She knew the feeling of these sheets well, and the thought made her give a small chitter of delight, turning the Jack's attention to her. His eyes were surprised, but his smile grateful as she placed her head on his knee and gazed imploringly up at him.
"Have you come to my chambers to entertain me in these sleepless hours, my sweet?" Came the cultured rumble of his voice, so soothing with the practiced effect he knew it had over her.
She nodded before speaking, her wings fluttering behind her to show her anticipation upon seeing that he was in the mood for some time together. Her earrings jingled as she moved to get closer into the arms that waved her into him.
"I could think of no better way to spend these sleepless hours, my love, could you?" Her laughter accompanied his before he swept her off her feet, literally and not, just as he always did.
-----
A rather enjoyable hour later he began to doze off, rather quickly for someone suffering from insomnia. He'd drank the entire glass of warm milk that he usually took with his pills, so that had probably lulled him into sleep so quickly. Normally he didn't believe that it worked, but she would have to thank Rennus later for his assistance in getting the stubborn man to give in at last. Smiling with happiness at his contentment in sleep, she padded quietly out of the room to clean herself up and get some sleep of her own.
-----
The next morning came too early, and with a scream unlike any she'd ever heard before from Cassandra, one of the Does she had always been closest to in the Warren. The scream shocked her only slightly less than the hysterical weeping which came from the room she'd been in only hours ago. Sprinting out of her bed, she became tangled in her bedsheets and spawled harshly into a wall, only to get up and continue out the door and down the hallway.
The sight that greeted her... there was none more frightening that she could ever remember in her entire life.
"Cassandra, what-?" She couldn't think of anything to say, couldn't seem to make the tone of her voice rise high enough to compete with the chocolate and oceanic Doe's wailing. When finally she registered another face in the room, she ran over, almost taclking Anastasia in her hysteric state.
"Amastonde, he's... he's not waking up. Oh good I think... I think he..." Her stomach was heaving with the pressure of her breathing, which, in not much longer, would probably cause her to pass out. Before that could happen however, the Doe pushed Anastasia aside in time to relieve herself of whatever breakfast she'd had beforehand. Her eyes were wide with shock, her mouth slack with horror, and suddenly her eyes couldn't stray from the bed, and the unusually still figure that lay upon it...
"No. No." She started to shake her head as she moved forward, crouching beside the bed as she gathered the nerve to jump up, so painfully close to her Jack, enough so that she could feel the lack of heat coming through his fur. Her nose nudged into him gently at first, pleading in a way her voice could not. After a few tries the pressure became rougher, his body flopping back and forth lifelessly under the force of her proding.
"NOOOO!!!" The word quickly fell apart into a series of passionate high-pitched screams, hot tears coming down her face so fast her vision was swimming, trying to block out the vision in front of her, though she couldn't keep from remembering, hours ago, his hands and gentle kisses, the erotic bites upon her neck which still tingled, though now painfully instead of pleasurably, the memory reminding her of things she'd never have again.
She faintly recognized the sounds of other voices joining the chorus of horror, and two more bodies gathered on the bed behind her, trying in vain to do what she had done only moments ago. Her Jack had been so very dearly loved, and nobody could accept the fact that he was gone. An angry face turned to her, Uria, and for a moment she was stunned into silence, unable to react.
"What did you do to him?! I can smell you on him! You were with him very recently you... you MURDERER!!" Despite the fact that there was no physical evidence of foul play, everyone in the area began to turn on her, she couldn't even see Cassandra anymore and assumed she'd been taken away, probably unconscious, to get medical assistance.
Her mind couldn't process it, couldn't think at all, all she could do was back up shaking her head, mouthing the words 'no', though she may have never stopped before, she couldn't feel the difference. All at once everything within her snapped and she made a break for the door, her wings coming out to give her extra speed as she seemed to glide across the marbled floor. She didn't stop until she was in front of the door, a paw coming out and snaring her roughly around her extra long tail.
"Stay! I didn't go through all this trouble to have you up and leave, you little bitch." The cold, agitated voice of Rennus cut through the chaos, his eyes wild with rage and panic, and all of a sudden everything made sense to her. It had been a rumour turned common knowledge that he was painfully close to achieving the jump up to become a Jack himself, and everyone assumed he would make that jump soon and be off on his own. Not that he didn't enjoy them, no, he seemed to be paritcularily fond of the Does and their Jack, or so she'd thought.
The first was obviously true, much more than the latter, and she was finding out why. He had killed him, the only Leveret allowed into her Jack's personal chambers, somehow he'd found the hidden drawer, and tainted the milk he'd brought with extra sleeping pills, probably procured at an earlier date. She remembered how fidgety he'd been all day the day before. Son of a bitch...
"You... You're the murderer." Her voice was soft, disbelief showing on her face as she began to back up towards the door. The sound of feet pounding up the stairs caught her attention, though they stopped a few feet in front of her, obviously confused by the look on her face, and that of Rennus.
It seemed he had become aware of the situation as well, because shock and fear filtered through his eyes as he took in the band of crazed Does, driven so close to madness by the loss of the Jack that he took from them. Suddenly his eyes narrowed, re-centering on Anastasia.
"Murderer! I'll kill you for what you've done!" Satisfied with the cry from the Leveret, the Does charged forward, not even paying attention to why or how he would have thought she'd killed their Jack. Nobody had taken the time to make sense of the situation, everyone was hurt and looking for someone to blame. Now with Rennus looking to shift the fault, she knew she didn't stand a chance.
"You'll regret this." She bitterly shot back at the Leveret before she dashed out into the night, running until she couldn't run anymore.
-----
She took only slight satisfaction in knowing Rennus' plot had been all for nothing, the Does having scattered in all directions, too afraid to stay behind lest another Jack forcefully take them over. She could remember Rannus' cries trying to rally them back together, he'd probably have been a Jack within the next day. But now he'd lost everything, just as she had. And she still hated him forever for it.
Rain began to pour down as she wandered, not entirely caring where she ended up. There was nothing out there for her that could ever be better than what she'd had. Nothing.
"Amastonde..." Her tears melted into the slowly forming puddles as she took this time to stop and mourn the loss of her love, alone.
