This has been stewing in the back of my mind for a bit. XD So here it is: Chaotic Kaden Joy!
Author: Vyn
Characters: Kaden, Hatter (with Guest Appearances of Marchie and Loreta<3)
Takes Place: Corvistowne, Kaden is around 5.
Word Count: 1088
(Of Mischief and Rabbits)
With a father like Hatter, it was no wonder that Kaden was born with an insatiable curiosity that burst into life the moment he was welcomed into the world -- much to Loreta's dismay. Even before he could walk, he did his best to get into everything and, Hatter was quietly certain, that the boy had learned to walk only to further inflict his chaos upon the rest of the world. Every time Hatter or Loreta turned their back, Kaden was into something.
Hatter could've sworn the boy was more skilled at getting into things he shouldn't than even Hatter was.
In fact, by the time he was four, Kaden had managed to explore the majority of Hatter's Corvistowne manor almost as well as Hatter himself. Everything from the main rooms and up to the attic and lacking only, to Kaden's great dismay, the basement laboratories. Loreta said it was too dangerous and, surprisingly, Hatter agreed enough to put in a door that a curious bird-child couldn't open. For the time being, Kaden had surrendered victory to his parents but continued to quietly plot his great adventure into the subterranean world.
Currently, the manor was quiet with night and sleep. Nothing stirred or made a noise in the hallway beyond Kaden's door, but the little muttbird sat with his ear pressed to the surface. He should've been sleeping in his crib -- as special contraption Hatter had thrown together in order to contain the wandering child -- but in the course of a year he had managed to undo the locks and escape without causing any overly loud noises which might alert the family to his presence. He was definitely a Corvie at heart, even if his only mechanical interest was in undoing the things his father did to contain him.
When the silence outside remained unbroken, he nudged open his door and puffed up with quiet pride.
After a quick sweep of the hallway Kaden determined he was safe and sprinted down the hall toward the one room he'd been trying to infiltrate for as long as he could remember: the basement. The door was a perpetual problem, but Hatter had been forced to leave a small door for Doorie at the bottom and -- after previous experimentation -- Kaden had found that he could slide through without getting stuck. It rubbed his feathers in all the wrong ways, but he had no choice if he wanted in.
What he didn't plan for, however, was the graceless entrance that caused him to tumble down the stairs. He crashed onto a small landing and let out an awful wail, clutching his head with his wings and sobbing heavily. Ironically, the door at the top of the stairs was not only mostly childproof but entirely soundproof and no one would hear his sobs or come to soothe away the pain. Someone, however, did. A loud thump of a door opening halted the child's wailing and Kaden lifted his head just in time to see a large black and yellow form hop up to the base of the stairs, blinking up at Kaden in sleepy confusion.
One long ear twitched and all of Kaden's tears faded in an instant as he burst into a wide, excited grin. He was... He was...
"A RABBIT!" Kaden leapt to his feet and rushed head long down the stairs and tackled the rabbit in a joyous glomp. "You're a rabbit, a real live RABBIT! Just like papa said!"
The rabbit yelped as he was tackled, flopping awkwardly on his tail and tilting his head in confusion. "I'm pretty sure I'm real, can't remember not being real?"
"Well, of course you're not. Not anymore." Kaden nodded as if this made all the sense in the world, but the Rabbit was merely frowning in confusion now. Oh well. "What are you doing down here?" He persisted, eyes wide and a grin plastered over his beak. "You're all metal-y, are you one of Dad's experiments? What's your name? What's it like being a RABBIT!?!"
The rabbit only seemed to look more and more confused as Kaden spoke, but he slowly began to smile again the longer he went on. Confusing as he might be, the child's cheer was contagious and Marchie was easily distracted. "O! I'm Marchie! Yep, yep -- Hatter made my arm," as he spoke he pulled up his sleeve proudly and then motioned to his legs, "and those too, see!" He was beaming down at the delighted child, liking him more and more by the moment. "You're Hatter's kid, right?! Kaden?"
With a celebrity smile, Kaden nodded his head and was instantly off on another excited tangent. He was far too excited to put a container on his joy.
When Loreta slipped out of bed, Hatter opened one red eye and watched quietly as she rose form the bed. She was in her human form and grumbling indistinctly at her lowlander leg as she left the room. Well enough accustomed to her grumbling, Hatter was about to roll back over when Loreta suddenly screamed, "HATTER!" and the Joker was jolted out of bed with wide eyes.
Hatter was instantly awake and at her side in seconds and he just as quickly found the source of her upset: the door to Kaden's room stood open and the boy was nowhere to be seen. Damnable! Had Kaden finally managed to get out of his pen? So much for peaceful nights! That, however, also meant the boy was probably on his way to the basement.
"My lab." He didn't need to elaborate, Loreta's sarcasm-riddled expression silenced him instantly. Crap. He'd be dead if he didn't get that boy back to her safely, he just knew it...and Marchie. This was going to be awkward.
From the basement door and down into the rooms below, Hatter soon came crashing into Marchie's room where little Kaden would soon be found. Both males looked up, their expressions equally baffled, but it was Kaden who spoke up first. His face was a mask of pure excitement, utterly oblivious to the trouble he was in. "Momma! Pappa! I FOUND A RABBIT!"
"What the hells is that thing?" Loreta's voice came from behind Hatter, fleeting with each word as she backed out of the room and was gone before the Joker could even answer.
The Joker cursed beneath his breath and hurried forward, scooping up Kaden and urging Marchie to stay in his room and not worry. If he knew Loreta -- and he knew her pretty well -- this was going to be a very long night.
