It was a very odd sensation, to be out of the apartment. He had lived there into adulthood, and relegating it to a place he visited, rather than lived in, was foreign and faintly disagreeable. He loved his family, strange though they could sometimes be.
All that was left to do was collect the last of his effects. Some of the most important, too. He was sad almost no one was home--Mommy was at Court, Minh was sequestered in the lab, Elyse was busy, and little Thalia was out who-knows-where losing her lifelong battle against doors.
He hummed as he carefully put things into his attractively lavender and hand-made messanger bag, and prepared to bid the apartment a final farewell. Until tomorrow, when he would be back to visit for lunch.
He heard the front door open and close. Someone was home, then. Excellent news, this!
"Who's there?" he called.

Ira's ears came forward at the familiar and conveniently needed voice. Perfect. Instead of answering-- only the boring would just sit and answer-- the stallion slunk forward, moving carefully through the mess, which, as he understood it, was far better than it used to be, and silently eased towards where he had heard the voice.
When he entered the same room, he paused, lavender eyes skimming over his bipedal brother with the vague, detached interest of a stranger. Yah, if they weren't family, he'd probably do Iphis. But rules were rules and he wouldn't eat his brother in any sense of the word.
He came up to one side of the white canine and glanced down at the bag before announcing calmly, "I need a dress." His voice made it sound almost like this was entirely common place and that he often approached the antenna-ed man about such issues.

It was his brother. He was very pleased by this; Ira was always nice to him, in his unusual way. He was a more welcome guest than Helena or Se would have been. Not that he didn't adore all of his siblings. He just had the vague suspicion that those two were out to get him, in two entirely different but equally disturbing ways.
Iphis smiled. "Hello to you too, brother."
He loved making dresses and usually did not need an excuse to do so (whenever he had visited Daddy at Court, which had been very infrequently indeed, he usually amused himself by mending clothes with the maids and making fashionable suggestions) but he wondered why Ira would want him to make him one. The last time Ira had dressed up, he hadn't hated it nearly as much as Se, but it had been quite some time, and Iphis had not heard anything from Ira that would make him believe he wanted to be pretty and dolled up again.
"And I'd love to! But why do you want one?"

Ira rolled his eyes at the currently taller man. "How else would I get into Mommy dearest's good graces and thereby officially join the Court?" Again, the underlying tone of his voice implied that the idea was commonplace at best and that he was surprised Iphis hadn't already figured this out for himself.
Then again, beautiful Iphis hadn't always been the quickest on the uptake. That was okay, though, because he had siblings, like Ira, to fortunately take care of him. Ira began to circle around the bipedal man again. Yes, this was going to be perfect.
"We leave in the morning," Ira announced cheerily. "You can make it on the road." Really he had no idea wot sort of work it took to make clothes, much less a dress. For now he had no reason to bother with them ever.

So that's what this was about. Joining Court. Iphis was happy for his brother, but he was curious about what mission Daddy could possibly have sent him on that required him to be in a dress. Usually when this sort of thing happened in books, it was because the man was supposed to seduce some kind of powerful baron to give his resources to the Cause without actually having sex with him because that typically ended poorly once the manbits were discovered. He didn't want Ira to be clapped in irons and made An Example Of.
So Iphis decided that he was going to accompany him and make sure things went smoothly.
"Okay then," he said, with equal cheer. "I'll get all my things together and then you can pick me up at my apartment. It's room 777 in the Sunshine Apartments on Rainbow Brite Avenue."

"Be ready early," Ira answered with his own dark version of cheeriness. "We shall make an early start of it. And bring your nicest tea clothes; I've heard it's popular there." With that rather strange statement, Ira flicked his tail in a good-bye wave then silently trotted back out of the oddly smelling apartments. As he stepped back out into the streets, he took a deeper breath and scented the wind. Nope, it didn't smell much better out here. With a small shrug, the equine headed carefully down the stairs and towards his Mommy dear's City suite. He would crash there to be closer to Iphis in the morning and then they could all go on their adventure! He was very pleased. ----- The next morning they stood in the courtyard and Ira made sad, disappointed sounds towards the Selkie Lakes raccoon who was eyeing him with concern and worry. "Your highness--" Lawrence tried to explain, but Ira just gently cut him off, stepping forward to brush his shoulder against the other man's thigh. Larry retreated swiftly. "All women.""Your highness, that doesn't seem appropria--"Ira twisted his head just slightly and stared upwards at the raccoon. Larry cut himself off. "Now."With a soft "eep!" the Selkie Lakes man darted off and Ira abruptly dropped himself to the ground and closed his eyes; for all intents and purposes, he had dozed off.

It delayed them nearly an hour, but soon their full escort was made up of only women. Lawrence tilted his head curiously at the sight of the full grown stallion snoozing in the middle of the courtyard. He approached hesitantly, hands clasping tightly to his weapon.
"Uhm. . . Your Highness?" the Selkie Lakes man called carefully. "They're ready whenever you are."
For a moment there was no response, but then the equine was on his different coloured hooves and tripping along to inspect the women who stared back with varying degrees of interest.
"Perfect." He turned and headed for the gates, obviously expecting everyone to follow him, include his white brother. He yelled suddenly, casting his voice out to echo back towards the Palace.
"Good-bye, Mommy dearest! Go back to bed and get some sleep!" He would take care of everything. Just as he always did.

When they returned to the Capital, the roads were sodden by the sudden and complete downpour that continued right up until they actually reached the Palace of Hearts.
Ira cheerfully dismissed the disgusted looking guard captain along with the rest of her soldiers and sent a beaming smile at Iphis. It did not last, well, the smile did, but the direction changed almost immediately as he left his brother without a word, trotting through the Palace in his fine, if now clinging and soaked dress, to his Mommy dearest's study.
"I'm home!" he announced happily as he burst through the door into a meeting. He tilted his head to one side and completely ignored the other members of the group to continue staring happily at the stallion sitting at the head of the table. "Why didn't you sleep while I was gone?"

Horror. Absolute horror. There was a single moment when the Queen of Hearts simply could not believe his eyes. But there were others around and he quickly hid everything behind a mask of disinterest. This was commonplace. He inwardly winced. He didn't want people to think this was a normal occurrence in the Court of Hearts.
"Welcome home, Ira," the stallion answered steadfastly, letting his eyes drop from his soaked and be-dressed eldest son. "I trust your quest went well.
He was highly aware of Ira's flat and blatant stare for he had not answered his son's question. He forced himself not to clench his hand and instead leveled grey-green eyes on his eldest. He quirked up an eyebrow, letting that tell his son to very kindly *#($ off right now and let him finish his meeting instead without interruption.
