The vine whipped her in the face as she looked down and closed her eyes to try to steady her nerves. When she heard the booming voice that belonged to the man with the fiery red hair and the general upset tone she knew she was in unbelievable trouble. She wished that she could just melt away and blend. That her beautiful blue and grey feathers were anything but the current color. She stuck out like a sore thumb, a blue tangled sore bird caught in a net of thorns. She didn’t want to look up she just wished that he couldn’t see her. This was a mistake; she should have listened to him when he told her to stay away from the city. Tears threatened to fill her eyes as she just wished she were anywhere but here. She was like Pandora and her box. The palace was just too great a temptation and she was going to pay for her stupid ness and curiosity. A tear rolled down her face and graced the side of her beak as she continued to try to hold others from following the same path down her features. She couldn’t cry no she had to face the truth and gravity of the situation. She had to be strong.

Dymphna hesitated to say anything, her mind drawing a blank as to what would both safeguard the child and answer her Queen's question. Really, all she wanted was for it to be out of the rosebush, back with its parents, and taken to a proper healer. Children were annoying when left unattended in an environment like the palace, but she genuinely liked them on a whole and didn't want it getting hurt any further.
Serafino shared no such compunctions regarding the wellbeing of children who misbehaved. His eyes narrowed on the bush in question and the unmistakably avian formed trapped within.
He hissed, baring sharp fangs.
A few long strides brought him alongside it and he reached into the bush until he could grasp the bleeding child firmly. Carefully, though for the sake of the roses and not the child, he extricated it from the tangle of thorns. Feathers and skin were no doubt torn in the process. He would ignore any cries of pain and continue his careful tugging and yanking.
Once free, he would throw the child off to the side roughly and bend down to examine the plant. Ripped vines, petals scattered everywhere, one or two roots unearthed...it was a complete mess. The gardeners could possibly salvage it, but the road to recovery would take a bit of time. He grimaced and stroked one snapped blossom almost apologetically before rounding on the bleeding form that had caused this destruction.
"Take it to the dungeon until I figure out what to do with it," he hissed, then went to find one particular groundskeeper who was best with this kind of damage.
Dymphna took a deep breath, partly relieved that he had chosen to take care of the bush first and possibly calm down. She walked over to the child, almost familiar but she didn't know how, and reached down to carefully scoop it up. It got blood on her dress and she grimaced but paid it no mind. It could be dealt with later. "Come on," she said quietly.

Maji cried out in shear pain when the queen reached down and begun to pull her out of the trap she had created for herself. After he had thrown her to the side like a rag doll, she wasn’t able to hold back the tears any longer quite sobbing shook her whole body as the tears flowed from her face. She wanted to say she was sorry that she truly didn’t mean any harm, but even as she opened her beak, no words came forth…not even when the queen mentioned taking her to the dungeon. Sebak was going to kill her and she knew that he wouldn’t ever follow her here…she was truly on her own now. She grimaced when Dymphna picked her up and she forced herself keep from crying out in pain again. She looked up into the does eyes, whispered “I’m sorry…” and buried her head into her chest and continued to cry as she allowed the doe to take her away to a place that she imagine was pure darkness, damp and cold.

Dymphna felt her heart go out to the poor little thing as she sobbed and huddled in the biped's arms. She had likely only been causing a bit of mischief, or maybe not even that, and then panicked once trapped by the thorny vines of the bush. It was a completely understandable reaction in a very unlucky location. "I'm sure you are," she said softly, "but there's no sense worrying about it now. We need to go in now, see if we can't find a doctor, and find you somewhere to stay in the mean time."
As per His Majesty's orders, that somewhere would have to be the dungeon, but there were many rooms that could be described as such, not all of them cold and inhospitable. Sometimes they had to hold high-profile guests in such facilities without completely depriving them of the respect due their rank. Other times, of course, that was the point.
She held the small girl as carefully as she could, one pink-furred hand reaching up to reflexively stroke the feathery blue head. It, too, was covered in scratches and blood. A few small feathers came away on her fingers and she winced sympathetically. Spotting someone nearby, she approached and told them to fetch the doctor down to the dungeons, then went to the only staircase that led down on the first floor besides the cellars.
A moment's walk led her to a torchlit hallway with several barred doors, one of which she opened and entered. It contained a bed, small table, container for water, sitting chair, and a lantern which she lit after setting the girl down on the bed. It wasn't soft, but neither was it lumpy and miserable. "The doctor should be here shortly," she murmured and sat down slowly next to the bird.

She allowed the doe to take her to the dungeons and nodded at the mention of a doctor coming to treat her wounds. The room was nothing like she expected it to be. There was a bed…how long had it been since she slept in a real bed? In some way…some strange was she was happy that she was placed here in the care of the doe. Her blue eyes looked up into the does and a small smile graced the fleshy sides of her mouth in gratitude. She hung her head and thought about all of the incidences that had occurred in her small life. She looked at her body…feathers loose and blood everywhere, she looked horrible. Again, she looked up to the does face and asked, “Why…why couldn’t I stay here? Why did you place me in her care? Why doesn’t any one want me around…? Why does bad things keep happening to me…I just wanted to stay here…I just wanted this to be my home…a real home…” Sobs shook her body once more as tears flowed freely from her eyes.

Feelings of guilt flooded through her, to think that the girl's predicament might have been a direct result of her own actions. True, His Majesty had ordered her to dispose of them, and there had been no other readily-apparent solution. It had to have been better than letting the children roam the streets and starve, hadn't it? Surely some of them ended up in good homes with people who came to care for them?
Obviously not this girl, though. She reached over to pet one of the less-damaged patches of feather. "I'm so sorry, dear. So very, very sorry...but you could have never stayed here. There wouldn't have been anyone to look after you, and His Majesty never would have allowed a Club to live within these walls. You must understand he's very firm on things like that, and what he says is what everyone else has to abide by."
The words were gently spoken but harsh nonetheless, the truth probably quite bitter to the poor child. No way would Serafino ever allow another suit to live within these walls, much less a Club. They could come here on business, but only members of the court and a few select servants were granted the privilege of residency.
"So I take it the woman you went with was a bad match, then..." She heard footsteps not far off and raised her head, hoping the doctor had arrived swiftly.

Maji looked up at the women her eyes were now quite red from all of the tears she had already cried. “No…she wasn’t…she…and her mate…and her children…they…” She just shook her head and closed her eyes tightly, she didn’t want to think about her any more they were bad memories…memories that she just wanted to forget. “…even if I was allowed to stay here…it doesn’t sound like I would be worse off then I already am…” She looked down at the ground and thought about Sebak. She knew he wouldn’t come looking for her and she cared about him…she wanted to make him proud of her even if he didn’t care about her in any kind of a compassionate loving way. “Why does it seem like the world hates me? …I…I miss my parents…” She started sobbing again and then stopped suddenly when she heard the footsteps approaching the door and attempted to hide behind the female as best as she could…she hoped that whom ever walked through that door wouldn’t do her any more harm. She was scared.

Dymphna hadn't been fully privy to the details of the incident, but she knew for a fact that the girl would never see her parents again in this life. When she cowered behind the doe for protection and support, she pressed the child's head to her side in what she hoped was a comforting gesture. She used to do things like this for her sister, many years before, and it brought back disquieting memories.
The footsteps drew closer and eventually a tall, lanky bipedal heron could be seen through the bars. He wore a white coat with a patch that announced his profession as medicine rather than science and sported intense orange streaks across the shining black of his feathers. A native of Corvistowne, and also a Nine of Hearts, the man was employed full-time in the palace and was permitted to live on the second floor. His appearance was perhaps less bizarre than others of his region, though the coat hid much.
The doe nodded her head in greeting at his approach and indicated with her free hand the child to her right. "Temmin, it's good to see you. This young lady is in need of your attentions. She ran afoul of a rosebush, I'm afraid, and it did quite a number on her pretty plumage." She did the best she could to sound light, though the situation was nowhere near so innocent now that the Queen had become involved.
Temmin nodded and knelt down, his long beak not far from the girl's body as he gave her a searching look. "Would you be willing to detach yourself from her, child, or will I be treating you as an unexpected growth on the lady's side?"

Maji peeked out from behind the doe and looked the heron up and down. He was tall and handsome…she liked the way that he looked at her and his colors, how they conflicted with each other. At the mention of the roses, she sighed and a look of regret crossed her face but she managed a little smile at his comment blushed a little at the complement from Dymphna about her feathers as her eyes moved towards his. She moved away from the doe and towards Temmin. She wasn’t sure what she should do next because, from what she could recall, had never seen a doctor so she just sat there and watched him. She looked at his smooth feathers and again down at her own…would they ever look the way that it had before? “Will it hurt?”[/color] she looked up to him with innocent sweet eyes, eyes that could never have asked for so much pain in her small short little life. She knew she was a mess and she wondered if she would ever look the same again…
