"Good." Helen slowly smiled again. "Very good. Hold on to your dream, with everything you have. Hold on to your pride and your honor, and always follow your dreams. To be a hero, you need to have dreams. It is all that seperates you from those content to follow through their lives in the paths laid out for them, stepping in the same places over and over again. Your dreams will give wings to your soul, little featherling. Just be careful not to forget that you are a Card, not an angel."
She looked thoughtful then, and turned away to head to a corner of the room where a pack had been dropped. Various odds and ends were spilling out from the bag, including a few more books. Nosing around through everything, she finally pulled forth a thin strip of leather, which was tied around a pair of feathers - one black, one white. Trotting back to him, she laid the feathers on the table next to him.
"A gift. To remind you of your dreams, when you feel like falling, and to help your wings grow strong."
[Note. They're not magical at all. Just a pair of feathers.]

Parzifal trembled again, though he tried to keep the shivering sensation to himself. No one had ever said the kind of things to him that this strange, pretty-sounding woman was saying. Follow his dreams? It had never been said, or even hinted at. Coming from this stranger that he'd only just met, it meant more than he would have ever thought.
He looked down at the feathers and they reminded him strongly of his brother. A little bit of his sister, too. For Imre and Poe, he would do anything. "They're... very pretty," he said, humbled by her kindness. Gifts were something they rarely received, especially with such sentiment behind them. "Thank you. I appreciate it a lot. You're a good person. Whether you're crazy or just really, really sane, I dunno and I don't think it matters. Just... thanks."
It would be interesting to see how he would wear it. Maybe his master would deign to tie it around his neck?

"Sanity is measured in the eye of the beholder," she said serenely, but there almost seemed to be a twinkle of amusement behind her eyes. "All who look upon themselves think that they are sane, and judge the sanity of the rest of the world in relation to their own plane of reality. Should one plane happen to line up with another, or at least seem to, then they see what appears to be sanity. Should those planes of reality fall out of alignment, then the viewer sees only chaos and madness all around."
Helen looked fondly upon the feathers. "Everyone should have something to remind them of their dreams, whether it be internal or external. My dreams are real to me, in that I see them every time my eyes close as a veil between the waking world and the realm of dreams. The sweet embrace of slumber holds all the reminder that I need. You, little featherling, might need something more concrete. You will be a hero, after all."

Parzi grinned, genuinely liking the strange deer woman. "Your plane must be wiggly, then, because half the time you're making a lot of sense and half the time I can't really understand a lot of what you're talking about. I guess parallel and wiggly is better than nothing, though, right?"
At her comment about being a hero, he snorted and smiled, grin toning itself down even though he was just as amused at the prospect as at the thought of wiggly planes of existence or reality or whatever. "Yeah, well, if I can win my own freedom and help my siblings win theirs, that's a pretty big step for us. I'm not looking to be a hero. I'm just looking to be more of a somebody than I am right now." Maybe what that entailed would become clearer to him as he got older and moved towards his goals. Right now, raising his rank and gaining his other forms was the only way he could see to accomplish them.

"Wiggly is always a good thing," she replied. "It allows more flexibility than sitting around on a flat plane and going nowhere. Plus, wiggly means you can get out of the way of things even if you're not sure they're coming. On the other hand, seeing things coming means it's just easier to dodge out of the way, right?" Then she raised an eyebrow (well, as much of an eyebrow as a deer could have, that is).
"Could not a hero be one who defends those who cannot defend themselves? Such as family, who needs to be freed." Or maybe she had just been reading too many of the musty, dusty tomes of books and needed to clear out her head before attempting another coherant conversation. She had rather definitely focused on the concept that Parzifel would, eventually, become some sort of hero - whether or not he would was completely and utterly debatable.

Parzifal liked her logic. It was... fun, even if it didn't entirely make sense, and he could play word games with it. He wasn't quite sure whether or not the words were games to her, but he supposed it didn't really matter either way. This passed the time a lot better than trying to understand some of the words in these confusing books, even if they were in Common. Many of them seemed field-specific and were targeted towards researchers and eccentrics who liked to challenge their head to a game of twister every now and again.
"I guess that kind of person might be a hero to the family member," he agreed with a small shrug, "but I don't want to do it to see a hero. I just want to see them free to do what they want. Our master said that we're on the right track, but it will be slow going. I've gotten hints that he won't be ready to release us at least until we're grown, but I don't know if it's for his sake or for ours."

Helen didn't know if these were word games or just all sorts of different ways of looking at the same thing, because a lot of times the answer would elude her before she was even done thinking of the question she was going to ask. That was okay though, because if she'd forgotten the question, then that must mean that it wasn't really all that important in the first place anyway, or at least so she'd decided. Or had she even decided that at all, but simply settled on it due to necessity when there was no other option forthcoming?
It didn't matter.
"That is the best sort of hero,"[/b] she said, voice decisive as she nodded at the young bird. "The only true type of hero, in fact. You do it not for the glory, for that is an attention-hog, but instead merely for the effort and interest of those who are precious to you." How satisfying. "Truly a gift."
"If you are under certain circumstances that you cannot yet change, then perhaps you should seek the wisdom of the ancients in whatever glipses of the uncertain future you might find. The currents of time change quickly and easily, and it is far too easy to be washed away without footing. As jesses might serve to capture a raptor, so too can they serve as an anchor, to hold safe in a storm."[/color]

The last half of what she said didn't make as much sense as Parzi wished it did, since it sounded like it could be something useful if only he was able to decipher it. Something about seeking the wisdom from others - ancients? books or people or what? - if he didn't know what to do and couldn't tell what would be the right choice, but beyond that he was lost. That was okay, though. He hoped.
"Well, thank you." It had sounded like a compliment for the most part. Her voice was still pleasant. He was about to say more, but he heard noises in the back that sounded like voices and his master's in particular. After a moment's hesitation, he heard his name called in a slightly louder voice. Obviously the man needed something.
"I'm afraid that's my cue to go," he said with a sigh, extending his wings slightly and bobbing his head. "It's been really neat to talk to you. And... thanks for not making fun of my voice."

There was a pang of disappointment inside of her, one that she rarely felt. It wasn't often that there was someone willing enough to indulge her in her whims and fancies, or at least such whims and fancies as were expressed when she spoke, much less capable of even trying to keep up. The fact that he would be leaving her now made her sad, though perhapse she would see him again.
Helen nodded once, gaze fixed on his form as she imprinted it in her memory.
"Very well, then. We each have things we must do, you and I. You to your service and waiting, and I to my destiny once more. My wish."[/b] Oddly affectionate, at least for her, the deer stepped forward to nudge his head lightly once, as if she were ruffling his hair, had he hair to ruffle and she hands to ruffle with. "Fly safely and surely. Your dream will not abandon you should you not abandon it."
Then, as if those words ended everything, she turned away from him and went back to the book she had been reading before, ignoring his presence entirely other than an acknowledging flick of her tail.
