"I will be here for you. As long as you want me to be,[/b]" Seth said, kissing her forehead again and running his hand down through her hair. His hand snaked along her jawline to her chin, his finger propping her chin up so that she was looking at him. He leaned forward until his leaf-shaped nose touched her strangely (yet delightfully, he had to admit) squat human-shaped one. "I want to be more than just your bodyguard and fuckbuddy, Lyn.[/b]"
The words were soft but his tone was still strong, and his gaze held hers steady. "I want to mean something to you.[/b]"
Feeling her shiver against him he pulled her close, against his thickly-furred chest, letting his arms and wings surround and protect her. She was clearly feeling quite vulnerable now, and he wanted to do whatever he could to make her feel... safe. Secure. Cared for.
Loved.

Why was he saying these things? Why was he saying those stupid, evil things that made her want to confess everything she was realizing at that moment. It was really undeniable now, how much impact they had on her. She wanted to mean something to him, too, but feared admitting it. She just stared back into his eyes as he held her under the chin, searching for the right thing to do next. She couldn't get herself to speak.
Luckily, he pulled her back in, and she just let herself be held, not saying a word as his warmth blanketed her. Her mind raced in panic. It had to be a joke. A cruel, horrible, evil joke. How could a Solandrian just put his feelings out there like that? This couldn't be real.
And yet, she thought as she gripped his fur to pull herself closer, if it wasn't, I don't know what I'd do. She mentally kicked herself to no avail. She could be as strong as she wanted, but having a weakness like this come and slap her in the face wasn't something that brought her comfort. Then again, she let herself smile in amusement of the thought, It's a pretty burly weakness to have.

The bat sighed softly. While her reaction was anything but unexpected, he had been hoping that she'd say something in response. Her silence hurt in its own way, but the way that she clung to his fur was, somehow, enough of a response for him. For now, anyway. Maybe he'd bring the subject up again in a few days, when they'd had a chance to relax a bit and let the news of her pregnancy really sink in.
He buried his muzzle in against her shoulder, letting out a soft sigh as he did and closing his eyes. Night had completely fallen, and he knew he should be bringing her back to the palace soon. But... He just wanted a little longer out here in the quiet with her. Just a little longer...
~~~
The days passed in a boring blur for the bat. There was a sort of routine to things - meetings from morning until afternoon in which the man pretended to be interested in whatever was being said, even if he didn't understand a single word of it, strange meals that he found... actually quite enjoyable, once he could convey his disinterest in most meat dishes, and nights of wild, passionate, sometimes even angry sex. That was his favorite part.
This, however, was his least favorite. He was sitting outside of her father's chambers, boredly tapping his fingers against the arm of the chair as he waited for her to come back out. Her father hated him, even with his new-found rank, and it was easier for all involved parties if he just watched out for Heilyn away from the short angry man.
She wanted to say something, but the words wouldn't come to her. She felt ill with insecurity. She felt as though she was putting out too much of herself and leaving it vulnerable, and yet... leaving would hurt so much more.
Eventually, reluctantly, they broke up and headed back to the Palace. She changed back into her bipedal form. Father wasn't ready to know about her human form yet...
The next couple of days were... interesting for Heilyn. The political meetings were dull, but her job, so she had to do it. How she dearly wished she could see the look on Seth's face as he was introduced to Bog cuisine. The Coyote had warned him that Bog Dwellers ate anything, but she remembered the look on servants' faces back in the Court of Hearts when she asked if they could make her a tarantula stir fry. And the evenings alone? The memories always brought a smile to her face.
Rolling her eyes she left her father's room. Normally, abortion was absolutely taboo in this culture, but according to her father aborting the children of a foreigner wasn't. He'd called her there to visit, to catch up with her outside of the political meetings. And, at first, it was a very friendly visit (save for the forcing Seth to stay outside part), until the topic turned to the Bat waiting outside.
Like HELL I'm was gonna give up these kids, she thought slamming the door behind her. she looked over at Seth, grateful for his patience. Subconsciously, she touched her stomach as she stood there looking at him for a moment. It was finally starting to hit her with full force, the knowledge of her pregnancy, and what it really meant. Granted, the child could be his, Bernard's, or Theo's (Heaven forbid, the poor man); but the thought of the offspring could be anyone's other than Seth gave her an odd empty feeling.
"Ready to go do something fun?" she asked. She was planning a surprise trip to a bar and knew how bored the Bat was.
Seth returned the look as she simply stood there, expression puzzled. Normally, she was abuzz with energy after one of her meetings, eager to talk about something other than work, eager to seek him out for some kind of interesting distraction.
He reached out to her, gently resting his hand on her belly, expression almost concerned. He didn't voice any questions, knowing Heilyn well enough by now to realize that if she wanted to talk about whatever'd happened in the chamber, she would do so without his prying. It was hard to deal with sometimes, but he didn't want to make her feel pressured or uncomfortable by his interrogation. Slowly, he took his hand away, standing and stretching as he took his usual position at her side.
"I'm always good for something fun,[/b]" he replied, an eyebrow quirked as he reached out to her, sliding his thumbs into the waistband of her pants to pull her close to him. She wouldn't be able to see it under his mask, but the tone of his voice would clearly give away the toothy grin he wore. "Sounds like you're in need of it as well.[/b]"
She knew Seth was curious was to what was bothering her. She took his hand in hers, lacing her fingers through his, looking at him with an unreadable expression. She felt telling him her father had just suggested she abort what he believed to be his children would probably create an even larger rift between the two men. This was unnecessary. She could almost imagine that fantastic, toothy grin on his face as he spoke.
She pushed the thought out of her mind of her revealing her human form to her father just an hour or so. He'd gotten over Seth to the point that he simply wasn't friendly, but still polite. She knew he was as ready as he'd ever be to seeing it. she decided to show him before something else came up. shaking her head from her temporary zoning out she looked back up at Seth.
"Yyeah, I could do for some fun, I guess. You just need to keep me away from the booze..." Her grip on his hand over her belly tightened slightly just before he removed it to be at her side. Probably why he suggested the aborting, she thought, her mind side tracking, probably just overwhelmed... "Let's go." Her voice was surprisingly soft from it's usual subtle rasp.
To a bar, then? Seth's ears perked, a sure sign of his interest, until her words sunk in fully. "...Right.[/b]" he touched her stomach again, chewing on his lower lip and searching her eyes. She had another responsiblity now, someone else to take care of, didn't she? "Guess that means I should work hard to keep out of fights, hmm? Don't want to force you to get involved...[/b]" his hand opened, spreading across her stomach, before he pulled her into a surprisingly gentle hug.
"Let's go, then.[/b]" he said, pulling away from her but still holding her hand. It was a puzzling thing, seeing his strong Heilyn in this state. She was so... fragile, quite different from what he was used to. It only made him feel more adamant about his need to stay at her side and protect her.
When they reached the bar, Seth couldn't deny that he was feeling quite excited about sitting down and having a drink. He glanced at Heilyn as he sat down. "Order whatever you want, and I'll drink it for you.[/b]" he said, making her a kind offer. He just hoped she'd pick something delicious.
She felt a tingle as he touched her stomach again. Her eyes filled with light as she looked up at him. The surrealness of being pregnant was completely put out of her mind. She had him, what the hell was she worried about? She smiled and hummed quietly as he hugged her. Still smiling as he pulled away.
"I'll be good. A lot a the people here know me, especially to the bar we're going," she popped up on her tip toes to kiss him on the nose of the mask, "If trouble starts, I'll let you have your fun, but get out of the way myself," she put her arm around his waist as they walked, "Just don't get too trashed. You do have to get fixed up before an infection sets in," she reminded him of the poisons that would have a heavy effect on him.
At the bar, she sat down at a seat next to him. She laughed. "How about a nice traditional drink? <Bar keep, give 'em a little Blackberry Firecracker to start off with?> Something pretty basic," she smirked at him. The barkeeper very openly stared at Seth for a good full 5 seconds before making the drink. As he placed the drink in front of Seth, the bipedal Raccoon then stared at Heilyn.
"<I know you...>" he gave her a strange look. There was a short exchange between the two. His suspicion was dowsed when she gave him her name and he laughed and clapped his hands. How delightful! He started making a drink when she stopped him. He looked incredibly confused. How could Heilyn not want a drink?
"How do you like it, Seth?" she asked.
Seth settled in close to Heilyn, one arm drooped over her shoulders, a lazy smile appearing on his face. For all his concerns, the night would go wonderfully, he was sure. Even if Heilyn couldn't drink anything (which was a fact that made him feel no small amount of pride. Those were his kids, and she was making a huge sacrifice for them! The man's ego could only swell.), he could do any number of things to keep her entertained. He made a silent promise to himself, then, that he would do anything to keep her entertained.
"It doesn't have bugs in it, right?[/b]" the bat muttered, but he was grinning as he did so. Even if it did have bugs, he'd choke it down for her if it was what she really wanted. When the drink was slid in front of him, he sniffed it cautiously, leaf-shaped nose wiggling where it peeked free of the mask. Oh, well. It smelled very strongly of alcohol and berries, and he was surprised as carbonation tickled at his nose.
He lifted the glass to Heilyn, using his free hand to unclasp the part of his mask that covered his mouth, a silent toast. He then took a deep sip.
Oh.
My.
God.
His mouth and throat and stomach burned. The bat could feel tears coming to his eyes, and he coughed feebly, setting the glass down and shaking himself. "I feel,[/b]" he began, clearing his throat and peering at the glass again as if it were a weapon. Slowly, he slid his hand around it again, pulling it to his snout. "I feel like my guts are on fire. Delicious blackberry fire.[/b]" And with that, he took another deep sip.
Heilyn had no idea why Seth looked so damned smug all of a sudden, but at least he was happier now than he was before. At the bar, she smiled.
"No. No bugs. If you'd like that drink, however, I could order it for you. It's not so bad. I have a Bat friend of the non-Fruit variety who swears by it and knows 15 different varieties," she teased.
...speaking of Marco, I wonder how he is? she thought. She laughed lightly at Seth.
"Well, it's not exactly blackberry, but it's the closest translation to the common tongue. Though it is extremely similar, isn't it?" Probably a mutation of the original plant. "Though, don't drink too much. This stuff still has some poison for that extra kick," she teased him, "It's fine in small amounts, but I'd adore it if you weren't too sick" to fuck me silly "for me to parade you around as my little foreign prize."
