Generally speaking, an SD, Rabbit, or other PC character can still be played after they have officially died. This is normally only the case with characters that you loved so much while playing that you, as a Dealer, are unable to let go of them after the time has come for them to pass on in game. Fear not, your character will still be accessible to you now that they are no longer in the realm of the living, though playing a ghost character has quite a few constraints and should only be taken on in cases where the Dealer is willing to spend quite a lot of time gaining points for them to interact with living things once again.
As mentioned in the Death thread, there are three options available to your SD, Rabbit, or other character once they have died.
They can either:
1. Pass on. You get points for character death and the character becomes unplayable. They may still have their own board for reference, but must be marked in their title as "deceased" and can no longer be played on the board not even retroactively. In this case, the character moves happily...or unhappily, onto the afterlife (which will be described in another thread later on) and will not be considered a part of the board any longer except perhaps in reference by other characters.
2. Reanimation: This option is not currently available on the board but will become an option once the underground Court has opened. Be warned: If your character moves on r becomes a ghost, they will not be able to use this option, regardless of whether they have left remains behind or not.
3. Become a Ghost: Ghosts exist in the world of SoD...but only just. Living beings, as a whole, do not believe in them, and the few who can see them would do well to keep the information to themselves...talking about seeing ghosts is something that you could get locked up for. If there's one thing that marks you as crazy...it's seeing Ghosts and Rabbits.
Ghosts give you a lot of options and choices, but be careful in how you make them as the choice is (in all but the most special of circumstances) irreversible once it has been made by the spirit. One starts off with haunting choice, Ghosts can choose (subconsciously or not) one of the following in their haunt routine:
a) To haunt a place.
or
b) To haunt a person. Yes, a person. Only one.
Let's assume your choice was "A". The SD is now allowed to haunt a place of their choosing, normally either the one they died in, or a place they harbor or attach hateful or beloved memories to. These spirits cannot see or hear other spirits (unless they gain the ability through points) and cannot communicate with them or even feel that another ghost may be near by. The area can be as small as ten feet (such as a cupboard or closet, a single rosebush or a special window) or as large as a three mile perimeter. If the SD has chosen the place as their haunt, they can never change this place some may even base the ghost's eternal hate and sorrow around that regret, or move from it. They are bound there by that choice forever unless through special magical circumstances of another on the board (a relative, or lover) comes to free them. Freeing them from their place also frees them from their choice and they will move onto the afterlife once freed whether they want to or not.
Now, let's assume your choice was "B". This choice offers a bit more mobility as far as where the Ghost could be, but could also be potentially limiting. The Ghost has now chosen a person to haunt, meaning that their spirit can never stray more than a mile from their specified haunt or they will feel their very existence start to fade away. The Ghost must follow this person until their chosen had died themselves, thus freeing them and forcing them to move onto the afterlife, whether they want to or not. The Ghost can never change the person they have chosen, even if they regret their decision of person to follow.
Unlike the unfortunates who picked choice "A", choice "B" allows the spirit to talk to, annoy, make snide comments to, and curse at, their chosen haunt. This will be the only person they are able to communicate however, barring magics that other SD may have earned, and they cannot speak to ANYONE else. No one ever said death was fair.
Points:
Ghosts can accumulate points? Why, what can they do?
It's true that Ghosts can not have any effect on the world of the living once they are dead, aside from taking in their surroundings and interacting with their chosen haunt if they have attached themselves to a specific person. However, through assigned points, they can slowly begin to affect the world of the living once again in increments of 50 point bunches, they can either gain benign abilities, or become poltergeists and gain rather evil ones.
Once you decide which path they will take, the Ghost will never be able to change their mind and gain the opposite set of powers instead.
The abilities that Ghosts gain are always random, and start off very small, but snowball quickly into increasingly strange and potentially hurtful or helpful things. You can suggest a direction you would like the power to roll in, but you may not choose the power your Ghost will receive. Sorry, choosing to remain in the living world is seen by most Ghosts as a necessary evil, and would rather move on than remain where they are denied so much.
As stated, the abilities are gain in increments of 50, each bunch of 50 will gain you a new power, a new effect, or build on an old ability. All points must be assigned to gain these powers, but 3 of these can be gained with unassigned points.
These is though, as always, a catch.
If you choose the path of Good powers, then for every power you add onto your Ghost, they begin to fade away, slowly becoming good enough in their works that they earn their way into a good afterlife, or a high position in one, even if they wouldn't have gone there before. As a parting gift, they can even choose to rescue a soul from the lesser halves of the after life, the dull and horrid, and the torturous and evil, and take it with them to the better one. They will fade away completely once they gain the power to Bless. This power comes slower to some, and more quickly to others, but when they get it..it's a one time use. Once used, they move on, whether they WANT to or NOT.
If they choose the path of Evil or hurtful powers, then for every power you add to your Ghost, they lose a piece of their sanity. They slowly become poltergeists, or evil spirits, that exist only to cause harm and distress. For every power gained, the Dealer will be PM'd with a bit of memory that the character has now lost and an irrational bit of insanity that they cannot repress any longer. This could mean that they forget what their Realm was in life, and can no longer tell on their spiritual body, or that they can no longer remember their mates name. Along with the irrational anger...triggers, such as the color red could make them fly into a rage for little to no reason.
SD who have died, do not retain the powers they had in life, they could be gained back through 50 point increments if asked for by the Dealer instead of the random, but they will not affect the living world, unless the Dealer spends more points.
