"You were... wot?" Her words nearly came as a blow to the teenage boy and his response might be mistaken for real sympathy, especially since his face had drawn still and he was staring at her with wide, shocked eyes.
No, Xylia had actually listed one of the greatest fears he held in his entire life. Losing his suit? That... that was POSSIBLE?! He would have stepped away from her, fearful of contagation, but his legs wouldn't move; they were like jelly. The only thing worse than losing his Heart would be to drop in rank.
But, wait. There were no markings on her wotsoever, at least that he could see... Losing his Heart to become a Joker might not be -that- bad, and it would certainly put one into his arrogant father's eye. "Wot... are you now?" His head came down slightly to the side as he eyed her again carefully.

Xylia flinched.
Somewhere between his shock and her shame the realization of what had happened returned to her with the force of a physical blow. God... How? How could this happen to her? She'd been doing so well in her training, getting so close to her goals, her dreams, and...and then it had all ended. Or, well...even Xylia could recognize that those thoughts were overly melodramatic.
Her goals and dreams had not ended, not completely... They'd just been set back, for an undetermined amount of time.
Xylia shook her head, calming herself enough to focus on the male across from her and to actually form a reply. It was hard, she had to admit, to get out all the words around her own inner panic.
"A Spade." She shifted, scuffed her hoof roughly in the dust, and then surrendered to honesty. From the look in his eyes the boy must've thought she was contagious and she didn't want that. "It's not contagious or anything, honest. I just made a bit of a mistake in my experiments, you see. I bought a pair of Bracers and the shopkeep told me not to wear them at night, or rather...advised me not to." She laughed a little, but the sound could have been quite easily considered bitter. "I suppose it was the scientist in me that made me do it anyone, curiosity and all that..but this appears to be why. From a scientific view, I must admit that it has its bonuses...but on a personal level?"
She heaved a heavy sigh and trailed off in quiet frustration.

Se tilted his head slightly as he listened to her, and he still felt as though the whole world was whirling. Elias had often threatened to drop their ranks if they were bad, but the canine hadn't done it; fortunately. Eir said it was all hot air, but Se was still concerned and stepped carefully around their uncle.
He couldn't agree with her estimation that the situation had any bonuses at all, scientific or not. If he'd been her, he would have made one of his brothers wear the bracers overnight and test it that way. For all that Xylia seemed pretty smart otherwise, inwardly, Se thought this experiment was kind of dumb.
Still, the girl was understandably upset and the hybrid tried to think of how to comfort her. How in the world could you comfort someone who had the world and lost it? He was at a loss.
"Uhh... you're still cute," he offered uneasily.

Xylia paused quite suddenly once Se spoke up.
Had he... just... called her cute?
The doe blinked a few times, shifted awkwardly, and then tilted her head to the side. It was quite obvious that she wasn't used to comments like that. She was a bit out of the loop lately, just working on rising up to her goals. Instead of dating or socializing, she'd been working and training, advancing herself to the 10 she was now. It was what made her suit reassignment all the harder on her.
"T-Thank you, Se." She blushed beneath her black fur but slowly lifted her gaze to meet his unnerving gaze. Those eyes were so intense.... Could he really see into her head? "Uhm... May I ask you a question?"
The doe was cheering up slightly. Slowly but surely the distraction of having someone to talk to was easing her inward concerns quite a bit. Especially when she could focus on something like his wings, or his mixed breed...or his brilliant yellow coat. Being raised by a Geneticist left her curious about all those little things that most didn't think of.

The rushed nature of his compliment might give evidence to the fact that he wasn't entirely comfortable in this situation either, but she didn't seem to notice and he certainly wasn't going to bring her attention to it. She seemed distracted from how upset she was and that was definitely a plus. He didn't really want her to be upset.
Her own dark eyes seemed intense, and his yellow ears flicked back again as she spoke. He gave a small, almost hesitant nod in answer, uncertain wot she could ever want to ask him. He was a Yarrow Gardens and Josiggy Marsh mix; he had nothing of use towards her little experiment gone awry. He knew a few other Corvistowneians, but he doubted any of them specialized in wotever it was that had gone wrong for Xylia; but if it helped her deal, so much the better.

Xylia had a lot of questions.
Very few had to do with her situation and what had gone wrong with it. She just found him very interesting and had acquired her mother's interest in genetics. Like Ophelia, she liked to know where a person was from and what made them...them.
For Xylia, though, Se's wings and his eyes really intrigued her. There was just something about those eyes...but beyond that, she had never honestly seen anyone with a pair of functioning wings like that before. "What region are you? I, can tell you're a mix of some sort...but I can't quite place where. The other thing though...ah, your wings..." Wings, oddly enough, interested her more than she had ever really realized before now. "Did you inherit them? Or was it an experiment of sorts? Like my inheriting these fangs?" She opened her mouth a little as a demonstration, displaying vary serpentine fangs that she had inherited from her mother's experiments.
Yes, this was what she needed. A distraction, a lovely distraction.

It was like opening a floodgate of curiousity, and Se found himself wanting to laugh. Though, of course, he didn't; that wouldn't be cool nor in keeping with his character. But that didn't change the fact that he found himself oddly delighted on one level by Xylia's prompt and excited questions.
He began to stroke at the bag thoughtfully as he tried to think of how to answer her questions. He guessed just answering flat out would be best. "I am a region mix," he said in a stately manner. "I am Yarrow Gardens and Josiggy Marsh." His ears came up and it was obvious that he was proud of his heritage, no matter how strange it might be.
He tilted his head as she showed her fangs and he muttered, "That's cool." He hadn't ever seen that before. He extended his wings for her, displaying them in all their glory. "I was born with them," he admitted and nearly said they were inherited when he thought about that for a moment. Actually...
"Neither of my parents have wings," he shrugged this off though now that he thought about it, it was a little perturbing. Had his mom experimented on him as a baby? That'd make sense in his screwed up family.

Xylia caught that momentary glint of laughter in his eyes, laughter that never quite reached his tongue but was nevertheless there. It pleased her and made her just a little bit happier by knowing that he was at least amused by her questions and not annoyed as some could be.
"Ahh, yeah...That makes sense now. It's a very lovely mix, I must say." Very bright, but very lovely. Xylia liked bright, cheerful colors and the mix between his brilliant coat and his mane was very nice. Her cottony tail wagged a bit, momentarily catching his compliment. "Oh? Neither of my parents had serpent fangs either... But my mother is a Geneticist and she spliced herself with a snake, apparently the genes were able to pass on...and showed a bunch of traits that she didn't even have. No scales though, luckily, I don't think I'd like scales."
She paused for a moment, eying those wings as he spread them for her to see at their full length. That was so neat, she just...wanted to touch them. Sadly hooves weren't all that great for touching delicate wings.
"I like your wings a lot. They'll be flight capable too, won't they?" The doe slid just a bit closer, studying his wings with those deep obsidian orbs. "They look big enough."

Secretly, Se thought his Yarrow Gardens part was a little un-manly, but he wouldn't ever admit that to anyone. At least he hadn't inherited any of the truly girly colours like whiny V. Imagine a boy being -pink-. Vishne was a flaming homosexual waiting to happen. Eyeing the cute little doe next to him, Se was abruptly glad that he need not fear such a fate. Of course, a simple glance at Xylia might stave any same gender impulses V might feel. Or it might just make him bi instead. Se abruptly tired of the subject and banished his brother from his mind.
"My mother experiments on plants and my aunt on... something else." He shrugged; they weren't allowed around Auntie Minh when she was working and their father had stridently warned them off of being around when she had the experimenting look in her eyes.
Se tilted the wings in different directions so Xylia could look to her heart's content. "I'd assume so," he answered, her words raising questions he hadn't bothered to contemplate previously. "I don't really have any basis for comparison."
