The abruptness of his reply caught Xylia off guard, and the young doe tensed momentarily in surprise. It took a moment to ease back once more, her head still slightly tilted. Well... If he wasn't going to get in trouble, why did he seem so tense about the whole matter?
It was probably best not to ask, wasn't it?
"I'm sorry to hear that, but at least there won't be any trouble. You've been nothing but kind to me, and I'd hate to be a subject of trouble for you." With a little nod, Xylia let the topic fall there.
Smiling again, and sipping her tea every so often, Xylia studied the room -- which was rather average -- and then tilted her gaze back to Se. "Do you two live here alone? Or do you have siblings and the like? I recently moved in with my half-brother, but when I was staying with my mom the house was always teeming with my siblings." She laughed a little and shook her head. "Can't tell if I miss it or not."

Se was beginning to feel antsy, as though the edge of a storm was hurtling its way towards them, and he could only desperately hope it didn't mean his father was on his way to the apartment. He threw his attention and gaze back at the doe and it was almost as though there was an immediate easing. She was so calm and graceful; he was jealous of that, wondered if he could learn it from her.
As she delicately sipped her tea, at least, that's how it appeared to the boy, she just looked so innocent and so. . . perfect. It was amazing that anyone in the world could just be so right. Good. Perfect.
The questions, however, brought him back swiftly into the real world and he looked away, studying the baseboards because he wasn't sure wot would show in his expression. She seemed to genuinely like her family and that was so completely alien from wot he knew, that for a moment he couldn't understand her at all. He tried to control his tone and not frighten her.
"I don't really live with. . . him. Sometimes I stay at the Palace or sometimes with my mother and my siblings. They. . . We. . . don't really get along." There was definitely a wealth of a story behind those words, but Se's control was only so fine right now; he desperately didn't want to scare the young doe.

Although she didn't say anything, Xylia noticed Se's tension almost immediately. He looked off, gaze unfocused, and Xylia worried quietly over whatever it was that was stressing him so. Was it thoughts of his father which tightened his muscles so fully? Most likely.
Again, she chose not to comment on his stress and instead focused solely upon their conversation at hand. If he wanted to talk about his anxieties, he would.
"O! The Palace?? Is it nice? I've thought about one day joining the Courts, but not for a while. I don't think." She didn't mention that her sister worked there, didn't want to even begin thinking about that. Mephit...was the one part of her family that truly set her off ease. Though... "I...get along with most of my siblings, but...I understand your feelings. One of my sisters and I...don't really get along either, not anymore at least."
It was honestly awkward for Xylia to mention that and it showed clearly in her face. The doe couldn't say she truly disliked anyone, but...the habits of her sister and the attitudes of Corvies in general...frightened and disturbed her on levels she couldn't even begin to think of. Harming people, killing even, for the sake of one's experiments was simply...not right.

Se was glad to not be pressed about his tension, though he wasn't certain that she was avoiding such topics on purpose. She seemed above such trivial matters as hatred towards one's family. Her confession about her sister, then, brought all of his attention to bear as he tried to keep the shock from showing on his face. And failing. Se did not have much experience hiding his thoughts.
This revelation distracted him from answering her about the Palace, though he believed completely and totally that she would do very well in any Court she chose, even if it wasn't her new suit.
"How could you not get along with her?" the question was drawn out without his really thinking about; it provided a certain contrast between their two personalities and upbringings. He would barrel ungracefully forth into the very topic she did not want to discuss.

Xylia blushed heavily beneath her dark fur, dipping her head briefly. Oh... Hell. How was she supposed to explain that?! It was such...an odd story.
The doe shuffled her hoof, took another soft sip of tea, and then took a deep breath. Alright, she'd tell him. Why not? It was the truth and there was nothing wrong with the truth, not in her opinion.
"I get along with her, or I did... I'm not sure how exactly to explain it. I used to truly admire her: she's a great scientist with a brilliant knowledge of her study...but I just, can't appreciate her methods. She studies poison, and she..." The doe shuddered faintly but continued. "She took a test subject against their will and...let it kill them."
Xylia stopped for a second, brows furrowed in her distressed frustration, and then let out a heavy sigh. There was no use getting flustered again, not over that. "I knew things like that happened in Corvistowne... But Mom was always against it, and I just...never imagined it would happen in our family. Really, it's why I came here. I couldn't stay in the house with her after that, couldn't condone it."

Se suddenly decided it probably wouldn't be wise to ever tell her his views on killing people. Especially since it sounded like her sister at least had the excuse of scientific curiousity. He, at least, saw nothing wrong with getting rid of people who were in the way.
The second thought arrived that perhaps Xylia should avoid meeting his mother and aunt simply because neither of the experimenting women had ever shown the least bit of concern for their test subjects. The little doe was very nice and kind and while he knew she was probably a good influence on most of the people around her, there was no doubt in his mind that the evillness that made up most of his mother would overwhelm Xylia and possibly even kill her.
No, the girl deserved much better than that.
So he responded with a rather noncommittal noise that was almost agreement. He was suddenly very afraid, actually. Wot if Xylia found out just how bad he was? He fought the urge to panic. There had never been anything truly good in his life before; he didn't want to lose it already!

Xylia couldn't help but notice Se's lack of comfort.
Not only in his silence but in his very posture. His thoughts were hard to judge, especially with the brief spike of anxiety she'd felt at the memory now clouding her thoughts, but the anxiety that persisted even once she had calmed was too much to ignore.
"Se? Are you alright?" The doe shifted a little bit closer, musing on his reaction for a moment. It most likely meant he agreed with murder, or the sacrifice of those deemed unnecessary for the furthering of one's own purpose, more fully than he agreed with Xylia's more honorable purpose in life. That, sadly, wasn't uncommon.
She sipped her tea as she tried to figure out how to further explain. If he...did those sorts of things, she wouldn't mind entirely. Just, she'd rather not be lead about in the dark anymore. You couldn't change people, she knew this, but was determined not to be left in the dark any longer.
"My sister... You'd have to know her to understand, I think. I was the closest to her out of my siblings for the longest time, and I felt...blind when I realized the truth of it. She used me to fetch test subjects for her, because I was more sociable and people trusted me, but never told me what became of them once she was done."

Xylia was stretching to meet him, and, fortunately, he sensed it this time. Still, his ears remained uncomfortably back and he found he didn't quite trust himself to meet her eyes as he tried to figure out exactly wot she was trying to tell him without flat-out telling him. This was the sort of thing Ira was very good at, but Se didn't always catch on as quickly. Today, however, appeared to not be one of his slower days.
He gave a small nod as he decided-- from her tone of voice-- that she must have felt betrayed. To him it wouldn't have mattered at all, but to the kind-hearted Xylia it had been a blow. He did not, however, have the assurance that she wouldn't mind him being a bit psychotic. Though that certainly wasn't his goal in life.
The boy struggled with how to reply. "I'm. . . sorry. . . she used you that way," he finally said. "She should have at least told you, though I bet she was afraid you'd refuse to help her."

Had Mephitisia been anyone other than, well, herself, Se's answer would have been perfectly acceptable to Xylia. In most cases it would have been true and, even if it wasn't, Xylia would've much preferred that answer.
The problem remained in the fact that Mephit was Mephit and that she feared very little, especially the rejection of her sister. In fact, Xylia was perfectly sure that Mephit had no sense of family and, even then, no love for those she considered family. The serpentine doe was heartless, Xylia knew this, but the events that had played out still hurt.
Whatever. This wasn't the time for that, nor for making Se more uncomfortable. She just wished she knew what to say to ease him out of it.
"Things like that...happen." Xylia nodded a little, almost sadly. "It's alright though: the past is the past and what's done is, well, done. I'm doing just fine and, really, I love the City."
