Silvanus was like a deer in the headlights, eyes wide, paralyzed, and mind running a mile a minute. He couldn’t think properly at all, and merely stared blankly with phantom expressions playing upon his face, unable to decide which wanted to take over. He thought of his mother, the last day he saw her, his hatred for his brother as a young child, his guilt and remorse as time went on, his relief and his hatred playing upon his emotions as he gazed at his brother…so small before, now towering above him.
Adam continued to grin, and realizing that his brother wasn’t moving to stand up, slowly crouched down on the balls of his feet. They were at eyelevel now, but that in no way seemed to help Silvanus. He gulped, and finally braved saying something, ”Your tree….” he said, as he saw the deadened branches peeking out from behind the black cape that covered him.
Adam’s expression turned sour quickly, and Silvanus fought the urge to push himself backwards and away from the beast. ”It’s what happens when you get left in a swamp to die…” he said, his voice low and steady as he raised himself up again, no longer feeling generous and allowing his brother eyelevel contact.
”I did what I thought I had to do! I did what I thought was best for mother…You…you were a monster!” Silvanus protested, now the fear coming to the surface, being unavoidably visible in his facial features, and the way he lifted an arm over his face as if to protect it from a blow.
Adam raised a brow, disgust apparent as his mouth contorted, before it opened to speak, ”Man is neither angel nor brute, and the misfortune is that he who would act the angel acts the brute.”
Silvanus continued to look at him over the deflecting arm, and Adam said nothing for a time. The beast sighed softly. ”It’s Pascal….” Silvanus said nothing, simply continuing to stare. Adam waited again, obviously expecting his brother to understand what he was talking about, but apparently Silvanus was far to frightened to give him the line of dialogue he so craved…
He snorted slightly, letting his body drop down over his brother, his arms splayed to carry his weight so that he could look his brother in the face as Silvanus lay upon the dirtied cobblestones. Even in this position he towered over him, and without thinking Silvanus launched his arm to try to smack the oversized animal away. A quick shift of weight and Adam was able to grab his brother’s flailing wrist in a hand, his teeth now bared.
”IT MEANS….that while you looked upon me in disgust as a child, that’s all I really was. A neutral being with no motivation but to please his mother and brother. At some point, you decided that your own discomfort was more important then the life of a child. Is that not correct?”
’No…no…that’s not…”
”YES…Yes that is it, my brother.” he said cutting off the deer, as Silvanus struggled to regain his arm, Adam continued, ”I was not a monster, I was not anything…yet. At the end of the story…it is not I who is the monster….but YOU, Silvanus. For leaving a child….no…a family member…to die in Golfam Marsh…”
”I’M SORRY! I’M SORRY, ALRIGHT? I KNOW WHAT I DID WAS WRONG! I REALIZED TO LATE! PLEASE…PLEASE FORGIVE ME! WE CAN BE A FAMILY AGAIN…PLEASE!” There was a part of him that was sincere in that statement. When his mother died, guilt threatened to kill him to. He wished that he could go back, to make things right, but he knew that it was to late…Adam would surely be dead. But there was a great amount of fear, as he shouted and begged his brother to release him, which to Adam, canceled out any sincerity that might have been in Silvanus’ words.
”Oh no, Silvanus. You are not sorry. Not yet.” he threw his brother’s hand to the ground, discarding it like it was shit in his hands. Silvanus’ arm flew and hit the ground with a thud that made the fragile deer wince, curling on his side to protect his injured arm. Adam’s face returned to it’s calm demeanor, an eyebrow raised as he pushed himself back upon his two legs, looking down at his curled up brother on the ground.
Silvanus opened his squinted eyes, fear creeping into them again behind the pain. ”What are you going to do to me?” his voice was quiet.
Adam’s lips broke away, to reveal his fangs, before he turned around, his cloak cracking with the motion. And slowly he began to walk away, leaving his brother behind him.
“I know indeed what evil I intend to do,
but stronger than all my afterthoughts is my fury,
fury that brings upon mortals the greatest evils.”
