Just something I've been meaning to write for a while. It's painfully short, and nothing all that special. XD; The primary reason I wrote this was because Jenn really likes Neil.
Zane had done quite a bit of research about his family. In particular he had researched his father's past. The sparrow was absolutely amazed to find out that he had living grandparents. Dad had never spoken a word of it to him—or any of them actually. Did dad really hate his parents that much that he wouldn't even speak of them.
They lived in the Selkie Lakes, two towns away from where he and his siblings had grown up. They were so close and yet so far away. How would his grandparents react to him? He sighed as he readjusted the pack on his back. No time to hesitate he was going to meet them.
He knocked on the door. Zane's eyes widened as the door opened immediately to reveal a rather short statued sparrow. It was obvious that Theofilus was related to the man in front of him.
"M-mr. Cornelius?"
"That's me. Who might you be?" He raised an eyebrow and eyed the sparrow from head to toe.
"I-I'm your grandson."
The man stared blankly for a moment. He knew that Theofilus had gone off to make a life for himself. He just didn't expect one of his children to show up on the doorstep. Especially a full grown young man who looked like he was half bat. It could have been some sort of mutation. He was obviously a mix... and he did look like Theo. "Come in, make yourself comfortable." Neil said as he waved the boy in.
Zane was surprised, but didn't protest. When he looked around it was a nice and humble little home. It reminded him of where he used to live. He never pegged Dad as being sentimental, but this was actually proof.
He sat down in one of the chairs when Neil took a seat. It was an awkward situation, wasn't it? Well, at least there was no mention of tea.
"So, are you an only child or do you have siblings?" Neil asked quietly as he laced his fingers together.
"There... are five of us, and dad adopted two others. And I think there's chance of one or two more on the way." Surprise.
Neil was more than surprised by the news, and the look on his face showed it. Apparently he never expected his son to have such a large family and not include him in it. Surprise again. "Well uh... I didn't expect that. I guess that means Theo's pretty successful. I—"
A door slammed shut. Someone shuffled into the house, bags could be heard shifting. Bags were dropped in front of the doorway to the living room where Zane and Cornelius were seated. A rather elderly looking hawk stretched her wings and eyed the pair of them. "Who is this?" she asked her husband.
"He's.... just a nice young neighbo—"
"Don't you dare lie to me Cornelius!"
Zane felt the need to interject. He had a feeling that this was the reason why his father left. "I'm your grandson, and I was about to get going."
"M-my what?" the woman was obviously taken aback.
Neil looked hurt, but said nothing as he slowly stood up. "It was nice meeting you. Could you... tell your father that I miss his letters?"
The hawk made a "humph" sound and crossed her arms."If that no good worthless son has no reason to speak with us we have no reason to speak with him. Children or not."
Zane tensed up. Fine he was going to be spiteful to this old bitty. No wonder his Dad left. His mother was a rather nasty woman. Zane made his way to the door, escorted by a rather grim Neil.
Zane paused at the threshold to look back at the sparrow and the hawk. "By the way, Dad's going to be The Queen of Diamonds."
And with that, Zane walked away. Maybe he would visit his home town. At least there would be someone there who was happy to see him.
