The bander match fields were not particularly impressive: a grassy expanse encased in a track. It was built for simplicity, by the looks of it, and there was nothing wrong with that. There was a game on, and the taste of excitement and the smell of dirt and blood more than made up for it. People in the surrounding stands were making a good deal of noise. On the field, one blue-speckled animal was kicking the crap out of a carroty-orange one. The sight warmed Jin's heart. He had the sudden urge to give up banders all together and go trick someone into starting a fight.
But this would be a great warm-up. He grinned at Kami. He liked the kid; she had her head on straight. When he got back the motel later, he was going to inform Abner that he was out-badassed by purple little girls. "You wanna stick around and watch a match?"

Kami hesitated for a moment; Elektra would be waiting for her. . . but surely the girl would be fine for a few more minutes. This strange man was highly interesting, after all. Yes, Ele would be fine for a bit longer.
"Sure," she answered, waving her two tails with excitement." She had never seen a real match before; she wasn't even certain she'd ever seen an actual fighting bander before. The two in the circle were very interesting; heavier and more muscled than her grandmother's.
She couldn't help but wince as the blue-speckled creature gave the orange one a particularly nasty bite. "Yikes! What if they kill each other?" the girl asked in surprise. Her head tilted and her tails curled around herself as she watched curiously. There was more blood than she expected, actually. Not that she was entirely freaked out by the gore, but she wasn't quite inured to it.

"Well, technically one bander is supposed to submit to the strength of the other when it just can't fight anymore. But I imagine that there's a death or two every once in a while, you know, when things get a bit carried away. Banders with insatiable bloodlust, pulling their opponents limb from limb."
He had never seen this happen in an official match, of course, but that didn't mean that it wouldn't, one day. It would be a mark of poor training on the part of the owner, though. He would hate to be the man whose bander was so out of control that it killed an adversary, or the owner of the bander so weak that it couldn't defend itself until help arrived.
"Not the desired outcome, of course. Too much mess, makes the groundskeepers angry." He watched as the orange bander fell, finally, at the feet of the speckled one, who gave a triumphant yip. If Jin had an actual hand to clench into a fist and pump happily in the air, he would have. But he settled for hooting loudly. And it looked like there was going to be a match after this one. The day was turning out better than he expected. He yelled for a vendor. "Hey, some sweets for me and my friend here, thanks!"

Sweets? She liked sweets. She just hoped she could eat one and still watch. A dark brown bander came trotting out, head held high as he coughed in excitement. The creamy female that came out next, however, was scarred and obviously more interested in the other bander than in the crowd.
The dark brown one was pretty cute, Kami decided, however, he was obviously young and she doubted he'd had many fights.
"Stop watching the crowd!" she yelled out at the bander suddenly. "Watch her! She's going to get you." Her eyes still on the fight, she informed Jin, "She's going to get him."
Just then, the cream female leapt on the brown male and began to gnaw viciously on him. "I told you," Kami said in exasperation. "He was too distracted by the crowd; it's almost like they never bothered to train him around them. If I had a fighting bander, I'd keep him around Cards so he'd be able to ignore it in a fight." She gave a decisive nod.

The brown male twitched, made a low, pained noise, and that was the end of it. He could no longer fight. The cream bander stood triumphantly over his defeated form, soaking up the praise from the crowd before she was taken away.
"Looks like you have a lot of opinions about the care and rearing of banders," he said with curiosity. "You should make your parents get you one of your own and train it for competition."
Besides, owning a fighting bander of one's own instilled all the right values in kids: a competitive spirit, a love of fighting, a disinclination to take shit from anyone, and pride of ownership. All virtues that were, sadly, found lacking in many of the people outside his homeland. People in the Capital had their priorities all mixed up. Kami had the right attitude; it just needed the right kind of nurturing to see its full potential.

"We have a few banders," she admitted. "But the family one is. . . uhm. . . evil." Kami flattened her ears uneasily. The yellow bander really was very frightening. "But it would be cool if I could get one of my own to train!" She gave a small sigh. "Too many people in my family. If I got one, everyone would want one."
That would be quite a few banders, really. Whenever they were all at the house, things could get a little crazy. She gave a small sigh. Well, perhaps she could convince her parents to let her get one anyway. The thoughts were distracted when the next pair came out, and the girl quickly chose the green male to root for.
She stayed for a few more matches before she reluctantly gave in to the tug of responsibility. "Well, I need to get back; my sister never knows what to do without me."

Jin was mildly disappointed by the fact that his highly enjoyable company was about to scram, but he decided that protest really wasn't worth the effort. There was only so long he could avoid Abner, and if he didn't go to his brother, his brother would eventually come to him, and being seen with that miserable creature in any kind of public forum was never at the top of Jin's Fun Things To Do List. It was bad enough that they were related and he had to deal with him in private.
So he gave the girl a nod. "I'll be back in the Capital eventually." Oh yes, he would be back. If he had to dump his brother in a snowbank to die and sneak out of the Glacier in the dead of night, he would be back. "Maybe I'll see you around, yeah? I'll gift you with some of my brother's fine ceramic art and we'll have a great time fighting banders."
