Jin didn't plan on being in the Capital long. He was only there to keep an eye on Abner while he attended his ridiculous pottery classes. There's a master artisan in the Capital, he had whined to Mom. People in the Glacier just don't appreciate art. He didn't even have the time to watch a bandersnatch match. It was take brother to class, take brother to eat, take brother back to the motel so brother could get all anal-retentive about writing epic letters to Mom and all their siblings that none of them would even read or reply to. "The matches, man," he told Abner irately. "That shit is what I want to see." Abner had whined something about the dangers of being left alone in the Capital and muggins and killings and telling Moms and some other crap that Jin had completely tuned out as he left the motel. He was going to watch banders knock the crap out of each other. He tossed the lumpy and terribly glazed coffee cup he had nicked onto the ground, listening to the shattering sound with satisfation. Now, if only he could find his way to the matches.

Double tails waggled behind an equally waggling backend as she trotted quickly down the street. It seemed like the day was going to be a really, really great one! It was bright and sunshine-y, and suddenly there was pottery pieces all over the place. Wow, that was amazing and unexpected. Her ears pricked forward at the Solandrian stalking just up the road in front of her and she skipped quickly up closer to him. Ooooh, he was pretty! He had nice spots and stripes on his coat and what appeared to be a spade on his tail and gorgeous blue hair. "Hi! You dropped your mug. Should you pick up the pieces? My dad says that littering isn't very nice. My mom doesn't say anything about it, but it's because she doesn't talk."

Jin looked at very enthusiastic fox child that had bounded up to him, at the broken pottery, and then back at the child. He shrugged.
"Your dad has clearly never laid eyes on such an ugly mug. He'd break it and leave the pieces too, I'm sure. If I'm lucky, someone who deserves it will cut their foot." He smiled winningly at the girl who had a tail set-up nearly as odd as his own. "Really, when you look at it, I'm performing a public service."
He batted the shattered mug out of the way with his tail. Out of sight, out of mind, as they said. He was sure that there was a lot more terrible pottery lurking in his future, anyway. He wondered if he could keep up a rate of destruction equal to his brother's rate of production.
"Hey kid," he said. "You don't happen to know the way to the fields, do you?"

Kami tilted her head at this logic and reasoned her way through it for a bit. Well. . . actually, that made a lot of sense. She glanced back at the pieces as he swept them out of the way. "I guess the pieces don't look so good," Kamaria said thoughtfully. "I don't know if you should want someone to cut their foot, though." She needed to think about that a bit more. "Maybe they could stub their toe." She announced this with an air of finality. With that, she put the whole incident out of her mind.
She turned her mind to his question and tilted her head curiously. "Any field-- oh, no, I bet you want the bander field! We have three banders in all, but they don't all stay at home like they're supposed to. Nana Aroha's is kind of mean." Even as she spoke, she'd already begun to walk off, presumably heading in the direction of the needed fields.

Jin started after the girl, trusting her to both know where she was going and lead him to the right place. And if he happened to get lost and not return in time to read Abner his bedtime story--well, there was no great loss there. "Well, banders are supposed to mean. The fighting instinct is what makes the matches worth watching. We," he continued, conversationally, "don't have any banders. My mother doesn't allow them because they offend my brother's delicate sensibilities. He's soft in the head, to put it mildly."
That, and the Glacier was a pretty inhospitable place even for bandersnatches. Feral ones were vicious and tenacious (especially when you threw rocks at them and caught them in cage traps; they tended to get really damn pissy about that), but pets were difficult to keep. Especially when Abner kept releasing them into the wild.

"I'd rather not have a fighting bander," Kami said thoughtfully. "It'd be too difficult to control it. And you'd have to keep up with a racing bander. Also very difficult unless you're a Spade." She gave a small, semi-smug smile at that. "Perhaps we should invest in racing banders."
Her large ears tilted backwards at the thought of her mother not allowing banders because of his brother. The absent male seemed to cause some trouble. "That reminds me of my youngest sister," Kamaria spoke aloud, but the words seemed to be directly mostly at herself. "She doesn't make my life too difficult, though; she's useful as my instrument."
Though from the sound of it, Elektra and this man's brother might be an excellent match. She did not dwell on this thought. Her tails continued to swish behind her as she trotted along. "So you're here for the fights? Is there a championship going on?"

Jin had no idea if there was some kind of championship going on; it would be great if there was, but he really didn't care. As long as something was happening; as long as there was a match. And truth be told, he was still stuck on something about the girl having her sister as an instrument. A little kid being so power-hungry and cold that she saw her own sibling as nothing more than a tool was...a little bit of a familiar sentiment, and he felt a spark of admiration flicker to life within him. It was just like life back on the Glacier.
"No idea," he told her. "I just want there to be a game on. Or grab a few random banders and start one. So, what do you bid your instrument to do, exactly? Run errands for you, mug people, implement your clever scheme for world domination?"

Kami couldn't help but laugh with some delight at the idea of starting a bander fight. Too bad Meezer wasn't around; that little female could have started a rumble on her own. Ah, well. She certainly wasn't willing to go find the creature to give this man something to do. Even if it would be funny. A detour was fine, but she needed to head home soon before Elektra freaked out again.
She laughed again at his cleverness, her chortle soft and low. Ooh, she liked this guy. She wanted to be as clever as him, but she doubted she was quite that quick. "I don't know what I would do if I took over the world," she admitted. "So I usually have her run simple errands. She kindof freaks out without direction." Kami's head tilted to one side at this thought. She'd always known it, she guessed, but really this was the first time she'd admitted it out loud.

Jin knew all about siblings who needed constant supervision. Abner needed to be watched in the Glacier due to his ridiculous manners and the sad fact of his non-Solandrianness, and needed to be watched in the Capital due to his equally unfortunate Lowlandosity and tendency to perpetrate acts of deep stupidity. His mother had had to pull quite a few strings to get Abner taught under this "master artisan," and if it didn't get the man the hell out of the house, Jin felt that his mother probably wouldn't have bothered. Jin knew he wouldn't've.
He could think of a few things he would do if he took over the world, though. Kami sounded like a good person to share these ideas with eventually.
"She sounds like a peach. Some people just need to be told what to do. It's a fact of life." He grinned. "Just make sure you're the one doing the telling."

Kami smiled widely at the man's quick quip. Yes, that seemed to fit Elektra very well indeed. Not that the two tailed fox held that against her littlest sister. It was just part of what made up the other girl, and secretly Kami thought it had to do with her conspicuous-- and very sad, if one had to admit-- single tail. Just one! Poor, poor Elektra.
With that deficiency, Kami mused, came many others. It was sad for Elektra because she really was a very pretty little girl and it was wonderfully lovely that Ele could at least be her instrument and managed to do that one thing very well.
"I'll have to keep that bit of advice in mind," she retorted. "Probably even more so while you're around." She gave a bright little laugh as her ears suddenly caught the sound of cheering. Oh, they were nearly to the fields.
