Green foil wrapper tucked in the palm of his faux-Avington bipedal hand, Jakodi slipped past the garbage pile that blocked and obscured the entrance to their home, peeking into the gloom. "Auuuuuuuley," he drawled, sliding through the flap of fabric they'd hung to further protect the door. "I have a present for you. It's a small one, but it's shiny! I think you'll like it." Anything that got a smile out of his brother was worth it in the end. When he got a few steps in, he put the scrap of foil on the ground and let go of the Avington form, awkwardly resuming his natural shape. It was always kind of hard going back to the unbalanced half-and-half form that was his own. He usually either fell flat on his face when his back legs got used to a top-heavy foreleg structure or fell backwards and smushed his tail. Now, however, he remained standing. That was... weird. Things didn't feel nearly as unbalanced as they were supposed to. And then he heard it... behind him. With a startled expression stretching his oddly-marked face, he turned his head carefully to catch sight of the bony appendages he'd banished only an hour earlier. "Umm. Okay. Hi, guys. I guys you can stick around for a little while if that's what you want." Having given them the invitation, he felt better about the whole thing and took an experimental step. Huh. That wasn't as ungainly as it usually was. They almost acted like a counter-balanced weight on his butt. What weird, convenient little things sticking out of his rear end. Maybe his brother would know where they came from.

The kitten heard a shuffle of feet at the door, then Jak's voice... Amahlghaidh had gotten used to the other boy talking to himself. Stretching, he got up from where he was seating, attempting to reteach himself how to read and getting quickly bored with it. How dull. However, sometimes it was a decent way for him to pass the time and distract himself from the... situation they were left with. "What did you bring me, Jak?" he asked, rounding the corner. There was something... different about Jak that Amhalghaidh couldn't place. Then Jak took a step... that was definitely weird. He still couldn't place it, but Jak seemed more... something... more steady in his step. "Jak?" he inquired, taking a few steps toward his brother. And then he saw them. All of his fur puffed out immediately, making him look nearly twice as big as usual, "WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!" he screeched, unable to stop his own outburst.

On the whole, his brother's response had seemed promising... until he turned into a giant Highland marshmallow with a melty-looking head being lifted by the fur of his neck. Jak jerked backwards in surprise at the screech and promptly overbalanced, falling to the side and hissing in pain as he smacked his ribs on the floor. He stared up at Amhal in surprise, never having seen the fur do quite that trick before. Wow. That was cool. Maybe he could turn into a cat sometime and see if he could poof up like that, one with lots of fluffy fur.
But wait, he was in the middle of something, right? Right. "I ate some candy I found in the gutter and I grew balance," he told his brother with a grin, rolling so that he was half-sitting on the floor. Then he giggled. "Well, that was after the burning pain. But the wrapper was shiny and I brought it back for you! Look!"
With a great degree of difficulty, given his range of movement, the boy reached to the side and pulled the green foil wrapper closer, then blew out a short breath so that it fluttered over to Amhal.

"Jak!" he cried when his brother hissed in pain. He ran up to his brother, but was unsure of how to help, "A-are you okay?!" he whimpered. His fur was still considerably puffed out.
Amahlghaidh wasn't bothered by the fact he'd eaten something out of the gutter. Hell, how many times had the two of them eaten from a garbage can and other such things?
"C-candy can do that?" he asked, wide-eyed. His jaw dropped and eyes went even wider at the mention of the pain. He was about to say something when a piece of shiny green candy wrapper came fluttering down and landed square on the nose. His fur slowly puffed up again as the wrapper for the questionable candy came closer and closer to contact...
There it was, and he froze, staring at it with crossed eyes. Would it do something to him like the candy did you Jak? in a belated reaction he panicked, popped up suddenly on his hidelegs and did a strange movement that could have been mistake for a dance before his previously extended and flailing front legs came back down to the ground and he stared at the candy wrapper, back arched and fur absolutely perpendicular to his skin.

Jak watched in a sort of slow-motion as the wrapper hit his brother's nose, and then the fur flew. Literally. He thought he saw a puff or two float up and away as Amhal danced back, looking like a Corvie had just zapped him with a bolt of the light-juice.
There was only one way that the Joker could possibly react to that. It started with a stifled choking noise in his throat, building until his whole body quivered from the force of holding it back, and then exploded from his mouth in a whoop of howling laughter. He fell back onto his side, laughing hysterically while air whistled rapidly through his breathing tubes, sounding like some combination of a deranged hyena and a wheezing asthmatic. His back legs kicked a few times with the force of his laughter and he tried to stop the hiccups from coming as he stared at his brother with eyes that actually began to water.
"Y-y-your face!" he screeched, choking on his own spit before the howling laughs continued. "Oh, Amhal, your face! You look like... like..." His body was shaking too hard for him to continue a sentence he didn't even have the punchline for.

A deep blush flushed under the cat's fur. He was... embarrassed, to say the least. He... didn't really like being laughed at, even though he knew it was perfectly natural for Jak to laugh at anything and everything. In the aftermath of the reaction, Amhal's hindsight told him what he must've looked like.
"I...I..." he stuttered, trying to recover from his rather silly reaction to something as trivial as a candy wrapper. He looked away from Jak, who was laughing hysterically still, and muttered, "Thank you for the shiny paper..... Jak?" she called a little louder, "D-do they hurt? The new tails?" he asked tentatively. There was a fair amount of noise outside suddenly. A crowd of people were a few door down and their voices were rising. They had eventually gotten used to the noise, but it still made Amhlghaidh wary. Conflict seemed to break out readily in this part of town.

Once Jak could breathe again, he gave a few panting breaths before pulling himself to his feet and shaking his head. A grin still split his face - quite literally, with the way his mouth worked. Cat enough to enjoy it, he walked over and rubbed against Amhal, lightly hitting him in the face with one of the weirdly bony protrusions. "Yer welcome. The paper was too pretty to leave floating around on the sidewalk. And y'know... for all that it hurt, I'm still glad I ate the candy. That stuff was the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. Amhal... it had nougat." The word bore an emphasis of utmost worship.
His brother's next question made him ignore the noise outside, a little curious himself. "Them? I don't think so. I mean, I kinda ignored 'em afterward. Just got 'em back right now. Lemme check."
Experimentally, he smacked one of the tails on the floor. Nothing. Even more curious, he moved over so that he could slam all three of them against the wall. It made a harsh clattering noise, but there was no pain. He grinned again. "Nope. No pain. That's even cooler. I've got a skeleton-butt, Amhal!" Anything for a laugh. Anything... and the word 'butt' was usually a pretty good way to get people snickering like schoolkids. He stood up straighter and did a little wiggle of amusement across the floor, the move made more feasible by the counter-balanced weights hanging off of his rump. Normally the structure of his forearms made that just about impossible.
Then he noticed the sound outside once more. "Geez, who's making all the racket? Sounds kinda angry."

[sorry about the wait on this, Amhal muse was being weird. P: ]
Amhal gave a startled cry as he was hit on his skinflaps with one of Jak's new tails. It didn't hurt so much as he thought it would. He blushed again in his embarrassment. Today was just full of weirdness from him, wasn't it? He purred and rubbed his brother back to show him nothing was wrong before he asked about it.
"Nougat? Really?" he asked. He enjoyed that particular candy filling (though not as much as Jak emphasized it). He walked over to the candy paper again and picked it up careful by one of its corners. Hopefully one that the candy did not touch and brought it over to the pile of blankets and pillows they found in the trash to make their bed and put the shiny green paper next to it. The boy remained apprehensive until the sound of the word 'butt' made its way into the conversation. He giggled and looked up at Jak.
"Well that's good!" they didn't hurt, so what else was there to worry about the random growing skeletal appendages. He turned back to the noise, tail twitching. His entire child-like demeanor changed. At first these types of noise annoying and frightened him... but after witnessing a violent exchange for the first time that didn't involve Dell harming members of his family, he would he quite enjoyed it. The rage he felt at anyone that wasn't Jak was very quickly becoming additive. He loves seeing pain, panic, and fear...
Ear up and tail low and twitching, he crept over to the noise.

Ooh, and now his brother looked intently interested in the noise! Jak sat back on his heels for a second, watching Amhal's slow creep, before he stood back up and shambled over. He had to be careful to keep the brand new bone tails above the floor after the first sharp clack startled him. It wouldn't be any fun scaring his brother away from something that looked like it might turn into fun. So long as nobody saw them and ruined the game...
In preparation for a potential encounter, he shifted shapes into a tall six-year-old Six of Clubs bull from the Glacier like a big, hairy guy he'd seen stalking down the street a few weeks ago. It didn't look nearly as intimidating as the original, being much smaller and younger, but it could afford him a strength advantage if he needed it. The furry ones tended to have tempers, or at least that was the impression he'd gotten after watching the man deck someone for stepping inadvertently in front of him through the press of foot traffic.
"What's the fuss?" he whispered loudly, walking over to stand beside and behind his brother. New games... he loved new games! "Whatever we do, 's your call."

Carefully and stealthily as he could, he peered through a crack in the boarded-up window. The dust-saturated air created something of a halo on the cat's white fur.
"It's those brown ones with the swirls. They're arguing with some of those green ones with the stripes," he whispered back at his brother, then turned back to watch. Those fights were always the nastiest. Neither side had to have even done anything to incite a fight other than look at each other. Even the big furry one with the blue and brown at least had a lame excuse as opposed to none. Amhalghiadh looked up at his brother.
"They probably have money," he whispered. If they kill each other, they could take anything they wanted. A smirk crept across his face. His tail twitched and swayed back and forth. The pies were tasty, but with money Jak could get other people to give them things. The Kitten was dying for some cream cheese.
