He just keeps getting werider and weirder, doesn't he? Check out his records post for more info on all the strangeness. I just wanted to get a little bit of it recorded so that I could play with it freely. Satra, I darn well expect a few thoughts from Amhal. <3 Heh.
Title: Confessions of a Collector
Characters: Jakodi, mentions of his family
Word Count: 847
Jak was in the bad habit of collecting things. He and his brother were dirt poor and living off of trash and thievery, so sometimes it could be good. A lot of the time, though, it just got him into trouble. That was what his brother said, anyway.
First had been the candy when he was seven. That caused him to sprout three skeletal tails from his butt to join his own furry original. That had been enough to scare his brother witless. Then again, they'd only been seven. Scaring a seven-year-old was easy.
Jak also found it easy to scare a ten-year-old when he showed up with a glowing mechanical feeler sticking out of his forehead like some sort of demented unicorn anglerfish, swaying from side to side and giving off a purple light. He hadn't really been able to tell what his brother thought of that one. There was a lot of staring, though, and some poking. More staring than poking. It was easy to stare at something when it glowed.
The goggles had been a nice perk from that find, along with the new metal body part. Just like his bony tails, the glowy thinger could be made to disappear when he changed shape. It was always there on his 'normal' body, though. He liked the way the purple glow reflected off the cracked green lense of the goggles. It was really neat. He was pretty sure it gave Amhal nightmares at least once when he woke up to it, though. He'd been sorry about that.
The next scare came when he was twelve and a bit more discerning in his finds. This one had seemed safe enough. What was so foreboding about an old, melted candle? He'd figured they could keep the room lit for a few minutes after the sun fell and maybe tell ghost stories or something. Instead, he turned into the ghost story.
He'd lit the candle while Amhal went to close up their garbage-covered doorway and make it look as trashy as possible to dissuade any potential visitors. All of a sudden, his eyesight went hazy, and then it went away all together, and a weird, gloopy sensation began to drip its way down his muzzle. He'd been confused and sat there, waiting for his brother to come back and tell him what was going on, since he couldn't see anything. He felt liquid pooling in the one lens of his goggles and sliding down his face.
It was a lot like what he'd imagined melting would feel like, except without the pain and only his eyes. The whole thing disappointed him at first. If he was going to melt, why couldn't the rest of him melt, too? It felt weird and he would have liked to feel it all over, just to see if it felt as weird everywhere else.
His brother's scream had been absolutely hair-raising on that one. The eyeball that popped up over his head a few minutes later, covered in fire, hadn't done much for Amhal's nerves, but it had cheered Jak right up. He could see again, all over! Even the top of his head! And his hair looked... really greasy. With little bugs in it. Maybe he should go and dunk his head in someone's sink, if he could get into their house?
The latest acquisition, at fourteen, was both less and more macabre than all the others, but he loved it best of all. It had been just laying there, rolling around on the pavement of a dark alley. He only noticed it because of the wet gleam on the murky ground. It was like nothing he'd ever seen before and, thus, desirable... or at the very least, interesting. Eyeballs weren't supposed to be out of their sockets.
His fire-covered eyeball was, but that wasn't the point.
When he got it back to their house, the look of it reminded him of a scarf, so he draped it around his neck. It reminded him of the dress-up games he'd used to play with his brother, except this time it wasn't so simple. He gained another point of vision, which he found pretty cool, and a nifty accessory to boot! His brother was always harping on about how nice clothing looked. Well, here was his. It suited him, he thought.
The first time he had a 'seizure' while wearing it, he was thankfully near his brother and not somewhere he would fall and break his neck. His entire body jolted, seized, and trembled, but then suddenly his mind was taken somewhere else entirely. For the first time in eight years, he saw his entire family. Dell was flying above a mountain range. His father was sleeping on a plush-looking bed next to his mother in a dark, beautiful room. He got to see Kieran, and Treasa, hadn't they grown a hell of a lot. And Amhal was... well, next to him. Flipping out. It was kind of funny to watch.
Did he really look like that?
Wow. He was a freak.
Cool.
