There was some kind of loud brouhaha going on a little down the hall, the voices sounding vaguely familiar, though she almost never came to visit Mom so she wasn't sure. Then she heard Tosiek, distinctly. That was the reason she had come (though the look of shock and horror on Mom's face as she wandered into her garden was worth the trip in and of itself); he had left a little while ago acting very fishy, and not in the cute goldfishy kind of way. Like in the I'm-keeping-something-from-Thalia kind of way. Naturally, she had tailed him. And now there was squawking about never escaping and bitterness. Were they planning on keeping Tosiek prisoner? Oh no, this would not do at all. She padded curiously through the door. "You know," she said, cheerfully, "you really should shut the door when having important meetings. All sorts of no-good ruffians can just wander in." Not that she would have seen the door even if it had been closed. She looked at the assembled company. She had wandered into a big meeting. She dipped into an awkward, four-legged version of what might have been a curtsy. "Your majesties and highnesses and excellencies. Tosiek," she finished, pointedly.

Tosiek barely kept himself from sneering at his brother, hurt and surprisingly feeling betrayed by Ez's response. He'd never had a problem with his siblings; he did love them even if he never saw them anymore. But the older man was making it hard to keep that in mind and all the skunk hybrid was learning from this meeting was that he had, apparently, cut ties to his siblings as well.
That wasn't a sacrifice he had sought, but apparently it was being made for him. His head came up. Fine.
And then his reason for everything came trotting into the room cheerfully and Tosiek fought the need to bury his head under his wing.
Snap.
He had really hoped that her mother's reaction to her sudden visit who have kept her occupied through the duration of this meeting with his parents, but, evidently, that had not worked. "Thalia, where's your mom?" He barely kept the desperate edge out of his voice.
Kel sniffed as the men fought and then Thalia--Thalia of all people-- came waltzing in and the woman thought her embarrassment was surely complete.

Theofilus let out a sigh of visible relief when Thalia interrupted. At least it was a little distraction. He had heard her name in passing, but had never exactly seen her before. She was, a very interesting person at first glance.
And... knew Tosiek? Well then. This was a surprise indeed. He raised an eyebrow curiously, not entirely sure what to say or speak.
Ezekiel jumped slightly at the voice. He was surprised that someone would walk in at a time like this. But his surprise grew when he noticed how Tosiek interacted with her.
No... way.
All the bitterness that Ez had went out the window as he tired to contain himself. "Tosiek... is this your girlfriend?" Ez asked trying his hardest not to smirk like an idiot. It was an assumption, but why else would Tosiek be with a woman?
Theofilus had to prevent himself from putting his face in his palms. Honestly Ez was just... a handful most of the time. "It's nice to meet you Miss Thalia, is there anything we can do for you today?"

For a moment she considered asking Theofilus if she could try on his cunning hat--it would look quite dashing on her, she thought--but decided not to; probably it was improper to ask the Queen if you could borrow his headgear. "Nothing really, but thanks! I was just looking for Tosiek. He's been a little preoccupied lately."
And wouldn't tell me why. But that was a discussion to have with him later. Right now she just had to make sure that Sir Corset and company were not going to lock him away forever; she didn't like this vague business about never escaping families. It made no sense. She escaped hers all the time. Not that said family noticed. She wondered absently if Mama knew how old she was.
Beh. Musings for another time. She grinned. "You aren't giving him too much trouble, are you?"

Tosiek shared a desire with his father to collide his face with something, though the hybrid would have chosen a wall at that moment. It was difficult to stop himself, especially when Thalia just started chatting it up with the bane of his existence like it was an everyday occurrence.
Which, he guessed, it was for her. He was a bit concerned by the way she was eyeing the Queen of Diamonds and, deep down, he had to admit it was a relief that something so innocuous came out of her mouth. He couldn't make himself reply to Ez in a way other than sending him a swift, black look that told the older man to shut up.
Kel wiped away the rest of her tears quickly, trying to pretend she wasn't still sniffling; they had to keep up appearances after all, right? "No, of course not," she answered softly. "We just want him to know that he's always welcome back with us." Her eyes went pleadingly to Tosiek.
The hybrid flattened his ears and ignored her. He tried to bring the young Queen up to date. "I've come to let them know that I'm leaving for good," he said. "I don't want to be connected to them anymore."

The look almost sent Ez into a fit of giggles. He couldn't help it. Tosiek had a girlfriend! He would just have to tell the rest of the family about this.... assuming he could even consider Tosiek family anymore. Freaking idiot still deserved a swift kick to the head. Ez went back to crossing his arms. And shot Tosiek a smug look.
Theofilus sighed. Really, his son was impossible, but at least from the looks of it he found someone that could love him. At least it was someone nice... it didn't make the sparrow feel much better about the entire situation. He reached over and squeezed Kelasia's hand lightly.
"We'd rather have him stay, but of course he is an adult, and he can do what he wants. Ezekiel was just throwing a tantrum because he loves his brother, but happens to be as stubborn as a mule. Please take care of Tosiek, though, Miss Thalia. Even if he's not part of the family, I still worry." He brushed the hair out of his good eye, "And, please understand, I'm not speaking as the Queen of Diamonds."

She had the distinct feeling that she had missed out on a very important part of this conversation. (Which was probably because she had.) The solemn finality of the whole situation made her a little twitchy; Tosiek was definitely explaining everything later. She nodded at the Queen.
"I keep him out of trouble," she said. Which was the biggest lie to ever dribble out of any Card's mouth in the history of forever, but they weren't leveling towns and they had fun, so she figured it counted, if you turned it around and sort of squinted at it. Trouble was a relative term.
"Speaking of. I had better leave before Mom bakes my tentacles into a cake. It's--uh--this joke we have. I'm told tentacles are actually a little slimy and tough unless prepared properly. It was very nice to finally meet Tosi's family." She ducked into another attempt at a polite gesture. "I'll make sure he writes."

Tosiek twitched slightly at Ez's arrogant look and had to fight back the urge to stick his tongue out at his older brother. Oh, really, come on! His feathers ruffled and he only put them back down with an effort.
Kel clasped tightly at Theo's hand and gave a small nod to try and convey that her agreement was fully behind the Queen's, even though he wasn't speaking in that capacity. Her fingers tightened around the man's, however, as her heart broke yet again. How could she have failed so miserably with her Selkie son? He should have been the very pinnacle of her pride and joy and now he was leaving. Her head bowed slowly under the weight of her grief.
When Thalia kept talking, Tosiek fought a new urge to hide his face in his wing. This was the reason he was frontman and she was not. Still, he didn't wait around for any long, tearful good-byes, and he certainly didn't want to give the bi-region any further chance to make this more awkward. He gently nabbed her by one of the tentacles and resolutely walked them both out of the door. There was a good chance that she had ruined most of that meeting, but he couldn't help but feel a bit saved as well.
"Let's go home to the Capital," he suggested quietly. "We could find a nice apartment or something somewhere." Maybe his new life would still work out.
