As Rai glanced over at him, the ghost child wore a pained expression and waved his arms in the universal 'NO' gesture to no avail. He directed his attention solely towards the monstrous creature that came up out of the water, which didn't seem to notice him. "Reggie, please calm down!" It roared once more and lunged its long neck towards Leland, who was forced to dodge again as he tried to figure out how to deal with this bizarre, unexpected foe.
The song made his movements slow slightly and a confused expression crossed his face as he stared toward the source of the sound. He looked very puzzled, as if trying to decide whether to attack or to say something. Her song was obviously doing something, but it wasn't having its full effect, suggesting that whatever this creature was... it wasn't entirely a Card or had some sort of natural resistance.
Lee didn't give him time to make his decision and lunged for his throat, clamping down his jaws on the slimy skin that stubbornly resisted any kind of serious, life-threatening hold. It appeared to be incredibly thick or resilient underneath the slick fur. He growled in frustration even as the creature roared again, the song's effect ruined by the wolf's actions. It reached up one claw in a move that the canine dodged, but his tail whipped around at an improbable angle and slammed into the Villa, knocking him prone into the water.

*$&%, *$*&%! He really rather wished he could think of something a little more useful to react with. They had to get to Leeland. "Mnem," the stallion hissed at her. "See if you can reach him."
He was going to do something he really hoped he wouldn't regret. The stallion darted closer to the ghost child so he could call out, trying to get its attention. What had the ghost called it?
"Reggie," he called out, whistling sharply in hopes of gaining the thing's attention. Oh, yah, that was certainly a great, grand, wonderful idea. He needed to clear the way so Mnem could get to Leeland's prone body, however, and he was fairly certain that his ability to take a blow was a bit better than the woman's. Not that he would have let her take point just then anyway. He did, however, desperately wish that the woman's song trick had worked.

Well, it had been worth a try. She should have known that nothing would resolve itself nicely and easily. She supposed she should be thankful that nothing had backfired horribly and the allowed the thing to unleash some kind of blast of destruction that would annihilate them all. That likely would have happened if Minh had been along. She seemed to follow the same bad-luck pattern as all black cats.
She glanced curiously at Shinrai, standing perfectly still. If he wanted to try to distract the thing and risk getting the shit mauled out of him, she would be more than happy to haul Leland out of the danger zone and smack him back into consciousness. Well, not happy, exactly. But she would do it.
And how the hell did the stallion know the beast's name? Never mind. There was time for interrogation later. She readied herself to haul ass toward Leland if Shinrai was able to snag enough of its attention.

The enormous creature's head snapped up at the sound of his name, his body freezing mid-thrash and slowly lowering into the water. He looked at Rai warily with one eye, claws slowly raising as if he wanted to attack the horse but hesitated. This would give Mnem the time to dash into the water and grab Leland as she'd readied herself to do, but the sudden movement would startle him and he would jump forward with a startled gutteral noise that echoed unpleasantly in the confines of the cavern.
Even though the boy knew he couldn't do anything, he still followed after the creature and pleaded with it to stop. He hated violence. He hated watching it attack people because of the mean, nasty things they'd done to it, all except for its family. Then, all of a sudden, the little ghost felt an odd tugging on something within him and made a whimpering noise. What...? He didn't understand. This was a bizarre feeling.

It was pleasantly surprising to discover that the monster's name truly was Reggie and that he knew his name. Yay, something was maybe about to go right! "Easy, Reggie," he crooned again, hoping to keep the thing calm when Mnem made her move.
His attention was, sadly, pulled away briefly by the change in the ghost's pleadings and mutterings. The ghost was whimpering? If anything that made the Josiggy stallion even more nervous. He hoped that maybe the child ghost would continue to talk out loud and hopefully give him some hint of what else was going on here.
His distraction would be swiftly ended by Reggie's bellow, the echoing sound slamming horribly into sensitive ears. But he had to move and quickly when the large Selkie beastie lunged forward. His hindquarters bunched as he leapt out of the thing's way, rolling slightly before he came up to glance around and again search for danger even as he started to call again to the monster. "Reggie, Reggie! Calm down, everything's okay." He was definitely lying through his teeth.

Mnem took advantage of Shinrai's distraction and pulled Leland's unconscious form out of the water and away from the beast that Shinrai had, for some reason, named Reggie. It didn't seem nearly vicious enough for the creature. Mnem would have gone for something like The Abomination or perhaps Bruce.
She smacked the Villa man lightly in the face a few times to see if that would rouse him, but her attention was still on Shinrai, and the monster with which he was attempting to communicate in some kind of civilized manner. He was clearly seeing, hearing, sensing, comprehending--whatever--something that she wasn't, and she didn't even know what. She didn't like it. She liked things that helped keep her alive, of course, but she despised not knowing things. If they made it out of here alive, he was going to be answering a lot of questions.

The ghost boy's whimpering got louder and he took a few steps back, away from nothing in particular that could be seen. "Stop that! Who are you? What are you doing? My bones! I- I don't like it. I don't like it!" His otherworldly body began to fuzz oddly and he suddenly whisked away, past the lot of them and through the rock wall in the direction of the lake. He was gone in the matter of a second.
As Mnem gave him a few light smacks, Leland roused himself enough to groggily raise his head and try to re-focus his vision. Everything was spinning after that slam to the head. He growled low in his throat.
Reggie roared at Mnem in a sound that seemed more a warning that anything, and then turned his full attention back to Shinrai. "Reggie? Mom? Dad?" He seemed to be asking a question, but was having trouble communicating. Lots of trouble. Speech didn't seem to be his forte at all. Most of the wet fur around his hackles was straight up and he still looked hostile, but also warily confused.
A few sounds could be heard coming from the direction they had entered the cave.

Rai's eyes slipped back and forth between the monster and the ghost, catching suddenly that the ghost seemed to be becoming even less tangible. His mind was cursing again, as his gaze locked back on the ghost to watch the child form get sucked through a wall as he yelled in protest at. . . someone.
Wot the snot?!
It was like the ghost had been sucked through the wall through a straw, and it only increased Rai's feeling of foreboding. This was underscored by the fact that the giant beast thing was staring back down at him and supposedly trying to relay some sort of concept. Ironically or not, the stallion wished the ghost was still there; at least he had managed to pick up some information from the undead thing.
"Easy, there, Reggie." The thing's 'questions' made him wonder if he had the right name. An ear cocked back towards the entrance they had taken, but he didn't dare look away from the monster now. He just prayed that Mnem would hear it as well and hopefully cover his back as he tried to keep their tails safe. "That's your name, huh? Who're you looking for?" He had no clue if the monster was even looking for something, but the vague 'mom' and 'dad' made Rai wonder if the something in the entrance way was about to make their life a whole lot worse.

Shinrai was still talking to the damn thing like it was a frightened and mentally challenged child. Having no patience for children--even huge monstrous ones--and no inkling how to effectively handle them, Mnem's brain made the executive decision to leave the whole affair in Shinrai's dubiously capable hands and allowed herself to be distracted by the sound that came from the entrance to the cave. The ensuing stream of curses was long, inventive, and vehement.
This was precisely what they needed at a delicate moment like this. More nasties. Mnem could feel her left eye twitching. Surely a blood vessel was about to burst. Pop, squish, dead. Perhaps an aneurysm was the best way to go in circumstances like this.
Wearily, she said to Leland, "Likely we should take care of whatever is coming our way, before it gets the chance to sneak up on us." Whatever it was.
