Small (proportionally) ears perked slightly as Reggie also picked up sounds coming from the entrance. He looked at Rai and suddenly seemed more relaxed and eager, coming out of the water another few feet in a surge. "Mom an' Dad," he said with a grin full of sharp teeth.
Leland did not like the implications of that statement and growled quietly. "Those bastard Lowlanders are my priority right now," he muttered towards Mnem with bared teeth. "This is wasting my time while they get away. They will not get away." With that, he turned towards exit tunnel he had noticed before as being heavy with the scent of rot and ran. The movement further startled Reggie, sending him splashing back into the water. The top of his head and eyes peeked out, waiting.
From the corridor they'd entered the chamber by, the sound of footsteps only became louder and more clearly defined. "Reggie? a voice called out. It sounded like the voice of an old man. A Selkie cat with a limp came into view, his biped shoulders hunched with age and hesitation. He'd heard noises coming in. Blue eyes stared in shocked confusion at the two people who decidedly weren't the monster. "What...?!"

Rai's ears flattened at that distinct response and knew that he wasn't in the least bit reassured by the thought of this monster's parents showing up. Would they be like he? Or was he some sort of strange. . . mutation? Experiment? Rai wasn't even the least bit certain what to think of the creature.
"Leland, no!" The man glanced over his shoulder to try and stop the other Card. "We need to stay. . . together." Too late; the man was gone and Reggie had darted back into the water.
When they were rejoined by someone new, Rai eased his way closer to Mnem, instinctively trying to block her from the old man's view, despite the fact there was little doubt the Selkie had seen her. "Reggie is fine," the King answered, keeping his voice firm and level. He gestured towards the water without taking his eyes off the man. "Who are you?"

Mnem thought monsters were a higher priority than normal—if sneaky and murderous—beings, and she didn’t dart off after Leland. If they were lucky, he would give up and come back, or exact his vengeance in a timely manner and then come back. Worst case scenario: no more Leland.
But the thing that approached them was not a beast, and did not look like it could be a related to a beast. He was a limping, tentative old feline, who looked about as threatening as a crippled kitten. Very gallant of Shinrai to step in front of her, though; she wouldn’t know what she would have done if forced to face off with an enfeebled cat. Probably best to stay on guard, though, in case the man turned out to not be quite as benign as he looked.
“Quite fine,” she muttered, echoing the horse’s words. Doing very well in this cave. Like a huge, adorable puppy.

For reaching 101 posts, you all get the special November prize!
Broken goggles: This soft leather strap has one goggle lens left on it. An off shade of soft bottle green, it's slightly cracked but looks rather charming...in its own way. It's slightly tingly to the touch though...I wonder if it's magical?

The old cat used a wooden cane to take another cautious step closer and brace himself, staring at the two unexpected 'visitors' to the cave. And Reggie. In plain sight. Half out of the water.
"Reggie, get back in the water,"[/b] he said in a sharper, more nervous tone. The giant creature just stared at him and his eyes darted nervously towards his 'son', and then back to the Josiggy horse. He seemed to be the more authoritative of the two. "M-my name isn't important," he said in a faint-sounding voice, the previous tone having left completely. "Please just leave. He didn't mean any of it. He just... he..."
A faint tremor in his hands had turned to shaking, the man seeming honestly terrified. "Please go!" he insisted with another burst of nervous energy.
Reggie just watched the whole thing from the water, his head tilted in a manner that would have been comical under other circumstances. "Boo!" he shouted suddenly, lunging a few more feet out of the water.

The child-monster's "prank" had Rai swinging back again, trying to keep himself between Mnem and the potential threats. Though why he bothered, he couldn't have said. Knowing her, she was probably cursing him. For all the bloody good it would do her now.
"Back up towards the wall," he said in an undertone to the woman anyway. It would be better if they only had one front to guard rather than continue to risk their flanks. That was a hard-earned lesson from years and years ago.
He wouldn't move until she did and, therefore, worked to keep the main of the attention on himself. "We're looking for some Lowlanders," he offered suddenly. "They killed one of our companions." He tried to keep an eye on the old man's face so he could-- hopefully- gauge the Selkie's reaction to his words.

...I'm sorry. There's just no way I can finish this. The muse is dead and gone.
