Elias nodded. "It sure would be useful. Funny thing, though, for some reason, I've never been able to build up that immunity to booze like I have poison. Not sure why it works that way. I'm no Corvistowniean, but I have my theories. And now you get to listen to them. It's what you get for getting an old man talking, so take that as a lesson for the future.
"The way I figure it works is, anything that's bad for your body, your body learns to fight off. If it will kill you, I think your body can learn to totally fight it off, like with some of the herbs and poisons I make you take. Alcohol, though, I've heard that it's good for you in some ways and bad for you in others. I don't know, maybe your body doesn't know what to do, so it partially forms an immunity. But, I don't have anything to back that up other than a lot of hours with nothing to do but think.
"I'll tell you, though," Elias continued, "it can be a pretty useful bargaining tool getting someone drunker than you are, either through a contest or just buying them drinks. What I've done, though, is make sure that their drink is always full, and mine gets mostly spilled on the floor or into a plant or something. Of course, I wait until they're too drunk to notice, so I enjoy myself at first." He licked his lips. Nothing like a good stiff drink at the end of the day.
A short walk found them safely back at the hut Elias called home. Now that they'd been to another place, it might be a little more obvious the difference in the amount of work Elias put into his place versus Tanner.
"Come here, kid," Elias said. He went to the side of his bed and pulled out a jug. "Since we've been talking about it, I figure you can have a pull." He tipped some into a couple of bowls they could drink out of, considerably less into Rai's. "Now, take it easy, it takes a bit to get used to, both the taste and the buzz. Don't want to be going crazy."
He went and fetched a jug of water to give the colt after the bowl was emptied. That's how he'd taught himself to drink back in the day, at any rate.

Rai rolled his eyes in amusement at Elias' "introduction"; the old man was going to talk no matter wot the kid said and they both knew that very well. El really like to explain things. This wasn't the first time that thought had come to mind, but even as the colt might have paused to really thinking about it, the canine continued, so Rai pushed the realization away.
Rai's ears went back in amusement again at this ploy, offering, "If they aren't drunk enough to notice you pouring your drinks on the floor, why even finish yours? Just take sips and pretend to get a refill whenever they do."
Caught up in this new subject, Rai didn't make the connection between how their home looked versus Tanner's, but he certainly would at a later date. And then Elias completely took him off guard by getting him some booze. His head came up and his ears went back, but he certainly wasn't going to refuse. Everyone seemed really excited about this alcohol thing and he was eager to try it.
Even if he didn't agree that there wasn't a way to build up some sort of resistance to alcohol. Maybe not total immunity, but something.

El nodded at Rai's reasoning. "That sometimes workes, but sometimes you might get someone who's so paranoid they think you're trying to get them drunk while you stay sober. Or they think that there's poison in the drink, or something, and either won't drink before you, or will make you switch drinks and then drink first. I've heard of a guy that would make the guy he was drinking with take the first drink of both drinks before he'd have any. Hard people to work with.
"Besides, like I said, if you enjoy a good brew, it doesn't hurt to have a couple while you wait for them to get drunk, right?"
Elias sipped some of the concoction. "There's better stuff up in the city, but this is what I got, and I figure you're curious, so you can have a bit. Let me know what you think, huh?"

For reaching 101 posts, you each receive the special April prize!
Glass Rose: This thin, delicate item is incredibly beautiful and intricate. It's stem has a thin spiral of smooth glass winding around it so that the owner can grasp it without being cut on the razor sharp glass thorns that line its length. This spiral can easily be removed however and the rose given to a non-suspecting SD. The thorns will cause a very strange thing to happen to the SD pricked by them and a curse shall befall. This rose can also be liquefied and drunk for a power, or used in a breeding. <3

The colt was curious and nervous all at once; mostly, however, he was excited and still a little shocked that Elias was all for him trying the alcohol. Wot sort of parental figure encouraged a child to drink? A COOL one! So Rai accepted his little bowl and stared at the clear liquid with only a hint of trepidation.
He surreptitiously watched the canine, noting that El, at least was just sipping and not knocking back the whole thing all at once. He didn't know much of anything about moonshine, as he was fairly certain this was, so he had no real expectations for the flavour or kick or anything.
Stretching out his long, green neck Rai carefully fixed his lips on the edge of the bowl and took his first taste of alcohol with all the reverence of one who knew this was an important moment.
It didn't last long. The colt threw his head back with a splutter, only just avoiding spilling the previous liquid and he went into a coughing fit.

Fighting hard against not laughing out loud, El nodded. "Yep, that was how I felt. This stuff has some wicked kick to it. If you want to finish that, I'm probably gonna cut you off after that bowl." Man, that was funny. Not that he hadn't expected something like that. The moonshine burned and was bitter. It really was only good for getting drunk.
"That stuff is for when all you want to do is get drunk. In the Capital they have all these fancy wines and stuff that actually taste pretty good, and you drink certain wines with certain foods. There are other drinks, and those taste good AND get you feeling good." He had another small amount of the rotgut, and shuddered slightly. As always, there was a lesson attached. "I suppose some people, they stop caring about the taste, and just want the buzz. Those are the people that have the most moonshine." Tanner was of course included in this, but El had met a lot of people who had been mastered by the drink.

Rai gave a few more coughs, trying to clear his lungs of the bitter burn that still threatened his whole body. Gads! If this is wot getting drunk was like, he'd pass! His ears went back as Elias imparted his new lesson and he wanted to glower at the older man even though it wasn't actually El's fault. Though the canine could have warned him.
Rai eyed the remainder of alcohol in the bowl and debated about whether or not that was really worth the effort. But if El could do it, he should be able to as well. He braced himself for it and leaned in carefully for the next sip.
The colt fell back coughing and snorting again; yep, the second sip was just as bad as the first one. His eyes were watering as he coughed violently, his body trying to reject it even as he was determined to keep it down. At some point, this was supposed to be a fun thing.

El took a sip, coughing himself this time. "If you can manage to get enough down fast enough, then you should start to feel a buzz. I honestly wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to drink it that fast. Maybe we'll get some of the stuff that won't make you go blind some day, I'll show you what real booze can be like. That's really the stuff you have to worry about, not this stuff. The wine and beer that taste good kind of sneak up on you." Sip, cough. "But that's another day, I think. Whew. I kind of watch out for them, myself. Maybe I'll build up some tolerance like you said, though."
He spent some time finishing his bowl. It really wasn't that bad once you got used to it, but it wasn't a lot of fun getting used to it, either. On the plus side, once the kid got used to this rotgut, if he wanted some of the other stuff, it wouldn't seem so bad by comparison.

The green colt eyed the man and then his bowl with concerned disbelief. He obviously wasn't entirely convinced by that argument. Still. . . it might be worth a shot just so that he could say he finished the whole bowl. It was a matter of pride, even if he really wasn't certain that he wanted to actually finish it.
Fine, he could do this. Ears tilted back and he carefully caught the lip of the bowl between his teeth then knocked the remainder of the drink back in one hard swallow. Ach! That burned going down! He dropped the bowl on accident, going into another coughing fit, though this was a lot harder and longer than the last two.
Still, once his body finally calmed down, he sent Elias a triumphant look. Haha! He had finished it! "Wasn't. . . that bad." Well, there was a blatant lie that a blind man could have seen through. Still, the colt was trying to be adult about it.
