Claws raked down Elias' side as the cougar's one good remaining front claw ripped frantically at him. He was stronger due to blood loss and injury on the cougar's part, but the cougar had opened up something pretty important, by the feel of it. He bit down more, searching for meat and veins. The claws still down at his side after ripping into the canine, El had a clear shot at the throat. He ripped that out as well, noticing that the first filth he'd attacked wasn't as dead as he'd hoped. The cougar would soon be, however. He finished the 5 of Diamonds in a spray of arterial blood, and turned to knock over and finish off the first Lowlander he'd attacked. Blood loss was making him start to feel week, though he could still feel his pack-mule ability lending his legs strength.
Two threats eliminated, he called the soil underneath the ferret who was most likely leading. He was already pretty beat up from the barrage of hoofs that was young Whip (which El would start calling Shinrai from that time on) and was more or less defeated.
Elias buried them all soundly for good measure.
He smiled. "I'm gonna need some help. Let's find some sour berries and get me closed up. We're both going to feel this in the morning," he said, appraising the colt's wounds.
"Man you can fight, kid. Good job."

The colt swayed from either a concussion or exhaustion, but his head came up proudly at Elias' compliment. "You're pretty good, too," he tried to tease. "For an old guy."
When it was all said and done, he really wasn't bleeding too terribly much, though he was covered in scratches and gashes, but the cougar had slammed his head into the ground when she pounced him, and it wasn't surprising that he was feeling that one, at least.
He wanted to go home and lick his wounds now, though. From the look of the bloody mess that El had become, he probably felt the same. Being the more physically able now, Rai quickly moved into the brush to search for the required berries. Fortunately, they were abundant in the marsh and he soon returned with several full sprigs. He handed them to his mentor before glancing at the piled earth that marked the mass grave for the Lowlanders and thought about spitting on it.

"Now, look here, Whip," Elias said. "These sour berries, they have something called an astringent. I learned about it from a healer buddy of mine. They help control some bad bleeding. It's kinda like how you pucker your lips when you eat something sour, from what I understand. He showed me how to make a poultice from it. Mash those up good, and make sure plenty of juice stays in there, that will help make it the paste we need." He followed Whip's gaze to the mass grave. In an eery following of the colt's thoughts, he walked over to it. He didn't spit, however. He did raise a leg and let a golden stream of justice water the mound. "I'd like to do this for all their graves. I'm not coming back out here for this, though. They're not worth it." He sat down, feeling woozy. "Mash those berries, kid. I'm just gonna sit here for a minute."

Rai's ears flipped backwards uneasily when his mentor seemed to get woozy just from a little urination. "Don't move then," he said in what he hoped was a condescending tone; anything to cover the worry in his voice. "You old guys always have to overdo it once the fight is over. He was quick to limp off, however, and begin looking for the required berries.
It took him a lot longer than he would have liked, but he finally hurried back to El's side with a large leaf and a nice mound of the sour berries. He glanced over Elias as soon as he got back, carefully putting the whole of it on the ground. "You didn't die on me, did you?" he asked sharply before he began to carefully grind up the berries with his forehooves.

"Wow, that sounds an awful lot like you're jawing, and not so much like you're getting me medicine to save my blood, kid," Elias snapped without much heat or meaning. "I'll be fine, and if you hurry up with those berries and meds, I'll be fine. . .um. . .er. Finer."
He lay down to rest, eyes slipping closed. He wasn't close enough to death yet for his life to flash before him, but he did have some weird #$* dreams. Snakes and all sorts of creepies, him tearing them apart. Pain shooting through his body, but that would most likely be the sensations he was really feeling slipping into the dream world.
That's why when Rai came back he was relieved, at least when he finally woke up. Rai's movements and voice at first didn't rouse him much, and it was really only when he snored that he realized he shouldn't be sleeping until they were safely back at his cabin. The snore startled him to full wakefulness, and he looked at the horse with gratitude. "Now, let's make some stinging, smelly medicine."

His ears had remained tilted towards the older Marshdweller and the lack of response had him worried. When he turned, however, to check on the canine again, a loud snore caused him to start just as much as it frightened the man who did it. With that rush of adrenaline came an even greater amount of relief.
"I'm already halfway through making your meds, old man," the colt said with a toss of his head. "You need to keep up." He hoped that would cause another sarcastic comment; it was the best way to judge how Elias was feeling.
"They're ground up; wot do you want me to do with them now?" He couldn't remember if the berries needed to be packed directly into the wound or if they just needed to get the juice in there somehow.

Elias picked his head up to watch. "I can't see it well. Ugh. Other way to check. Put a glob on that cut on your shoulder, I'll be able to tell by how it reacts." When Whip reluctantly did so, and hissed profoundly, sending the canine a dirty look, El cackled. "'Swhat you get for sassin'." He forced himself to his feet, slowly walking to the colt and the improvised pestle.
"Lookin' good," he said, still slurring sleepily. He began to apply the mixture gingerly to his worse cuts, hissing himself. He was still pretty stiff. Laying down had been a bad idea, but he wasn't entirely certain he would be in control of that faculty himself right now had he not activated his pack-mule ability. "Now you can have your payback, Whip," he said. "Help me get some of the nastier cuts on my back. Then we'll make our way home on one of the safer trails. Think you can navigate us there?" he asked, knowing that the chore would be something of a compliment/treat for the young stallion, as well as a rest for himself.

"Of course I can lead the way back," Rai snapped, with a toss of his head. He hadn't yet had time to forgive Elias for 'tricking' him into putting the berries into his wound. That had hurt! Still, it didn't give him any pleasure to see El's pain, especially not knowing that he was about to have to do the same thing to the bad cuts on the canine's back.
Still, he quickly did as he was instructed; he didn't want to take a further chance of El getting an infection, something that was very likely in any marsh environment. As soon as he got the berry properly put into the canine's wounds, and had some left over, he hesitated for a moment before trying to tie up the mash in the leaf. If he could bring it back for use later, all the better. He didn't like picking berries with his teeth.
