The boy took the blow without protest, a mischievous grin as he ducked his head to help soften the hit. Still, as El put his focus on the math, the colt felt obligated to do the same. Rai flicked his tail from one side to the other and he gave another put upon sigh of annoyance and frustration. "How about I just hire somebody to do this part instead?" It was only a half joke; if he could get out of doing any further math he definitely would. He doubted, however, that Elias would let him get away with that.
His eyes were back on the math now that El had pointed out his error and tried to follow why he'd made it since it was obvious now. He gave a low growl under his breath. Each step wasn't difficult and when he was working on them, he thought he was doing them right. But it'd be one little error that would then become more and more emphasized as he proceeded through the steps with the now incorrect numbers.

"Someday you can, kid. In fact, that's the ideal, doing well enough that you can pay someone else to do the boring work while you focus on what you like or think is more important. That's not why we're doing it, though. I'm going to teach you more advanced math, and science. The reason for that is I'm going to show you some analytical things, and some puzzles, stuff like that. Teach you how to think outside the box and how to think circles around anyone trying to mess you over. To get those, though, you have to get the basics. I'm sure I probably said it all before, but it's like the exercises and the poisons. You have to start small and get the basics, and that greases the wheels for the bigger stuff." He knew the equine would be nice and big and strong, and if he could get the kid to use his whole brain as well, they’d be off to a good start. Elias wasn’t completely sure what the start was right now, but he knew that they could get a lot of things accomplished if the kid was willing to fall in line.

Rai fought the urge to groan as El began his lecture again. "I know, I know! And I'm trying. That doesn't make any less boring." The boy made a face and wondered if there was any way he could distract the canine from yet another lecture
"Hey, weren't we going to check on those traps today?" Not that he had any desire for meat, but Elias seemed to enjoy something other than vegetables and plants on occasion and they could sell or trade any extra pelts they happened to get. The colt hopped up in hopes of encouraging Elias to go along with the rather blatant ruse for him to get out of math-- at least for a little while. He stretched up and down and back and forth, working out the kinks in his neck and shoulders from his homework.

“We were going to,” El said, not looking up from the work. “The worst thing you can do is leave a problem like this in the middle, without having a good stopping point. Finish this one and we’ll go.”
When Rai was done with the problem, they got together the satchel that El was so accustomed to carrying on these expeditions. He could put just about anything in there. He always left with it mostly empty in case he found something really good to sell later. He also made sure that his abilities were fresh. After the giant snake, he wasn’t taking any precautions, and he didn’t want to be caught with an unloaded gun, so to speak.
“May as well make a circuit,” Elias said thoughtfully. He liked making a big circle, it seemed fitting, and somewhat efficient. “Let’s get the trickier patches first so that once it gets closer to sundown we won’t have so much trouble. You ready, kid?”

Rai plopped back down with a put-upon sigh, but he had a real reason to get it done now, and it wasn't that much longer until he had it completed and they could leave. The colt fell easily into their preparation routine and was more than glad to gather the things they needed. He had a small set of packs himself now, though he carried a few things that El was concerned he'd need if for some reason he got lost in the marsh alone.
The boy was swiftly becoming adept, however, and he moved with his own confidence now when they were out travelling. "Ready!" he announced, striking out a short way himself before pausing to look back and wait for Elias to take the lead. He wasn't so great a fool-- and he'd been yelled at for doing it once-- that he'd run ahead without El's guidance.

It was a good thing the colt stopped, because El had no qualms about yelling at him again. And again. And again.
They made their way to the far reaches of the territory El had staked out as his own. It wasn't the roughest patch, yet, but it was the farthest away. He'd noticed how much the Marsh shifted. It was slow enough to not cause him a panic, but it was quick enough that it was alarming sometimes.
The traps here were clear, hadn't even been set off. Maybe he should map out the areas that gave him the best yield on his traps. He wondered if it changed as much as the Marsh seemed to shift.
"Next area. Keep close, boy, this one's been rough before." He wondered how close they wanted to travel to the spot El had found the colt. He might amble a bit closer each time to see how Whip reacted.

The boy had to admit an inner disappointment that nothing was in these traps, but it was still just as well. Nothing was encroaching on El's territory; at least, not yet, and that was a good first step. No one wanting in on the area the two Marshdwellers of them kept clear of the majority of nasties was always a good thing, and also no sign of a new nasty trying to get into the area clear of most other predators. They were definitely priming the land for the needs of a tour business, especially one geared towards people who wouldn't know what the *(## to do in a new territory of which they knew none of the dangers.
Rai gave a quick nod at El's words, having to concentrate harder in this area anyway; hooves were occasionally very difficult in the soft ground and prone to sticking. He had to jerk his elgs a little bit harder to get his feet free and it caused him to become tired faster than he cared to admit. When the mud stuck to his feet and legs, it got even worse.

Elias made his way through the muck and mire, occasionally doggy-paddling through the deeper water. He was disappointed in the lack of food in the traps, though not running into monsters made his job a lot easier.
They got to a dry patch and Elias hurried them up onto it. He thought he'd seen movement in the distance, and in this part of the Marsh there was no guarantee movement would be friendly.
"Get down, boy," he said, directing them to a bit of brush. "Let me see," There in the distance, he saw some figures with fishing rods. Brown figures. Lowlanders, poaching fish from Josiggy's superior waters. El fought down a growl. There were three, and he couldn't tell rank. Chances were they didn't have much magic to deal with, but in all honesty, neither did El. His only surprise was to make it sound like someone else was whispering. That wouldn't do at all.
He wasn't sure if Rai had seen the figures or not, but he didn't think so. Surely the lad would get curious, though. He just didn't know how the boy would react.

Rai got down as he was told to do and tried very hard to keep from twitching. Curiousity was burning within him; he wanted to know what El had seen! Was it a monster? Prey for the carnivore in his teacher? His ears perked up and he took a peek around the rock he was ducked behind. First he noticed that El was still and staring thoughtfully-- if a trifle angrily-- down the way. Rai tried to see wot the canine saw, but the colt couldn't see whatever it was that the other Marshdweller was looking at.
His ears flattened and he hesitated for just a moment before beginning to inch away from Elias and around the far side of the rock. He paused for a moment, then began to stealth his way into the Marsh, just as the canine had taught him. It was still slow going for him; he wasn't as good at this as Elias, but he was being taught by one of the best. The colt continued to inch his way through the marsh.
