"I did say the rains would start. Tonight." Though his annoyingly effective canine ears had picked up on the comment, he didn't seem particularly offended by it. He waited while the colt made his painful way outside. It was a little difficult to watch, given his past with injury at the hands of the Marsh and suspecting what must be going through the colt's mind. A lot of frustration for starters. He made a note to give Rai a little more help with his bedding later.
"It's nice and warm, and dry, so you won't have to worry about mud as much. We'll start off by getting you walking around. I found out the hard way that if you push to hard at the beginning, you'll wind up worse for wear. So, we'll walk. Are you up to learning some about this place, kid?"

Rai flattened his ears at the canine's rejoinder, but at that point he was more concerned about the pain than coming up with his own snappy comeback. Because of that, he definitely wanted someone to keep him from thinking so constantly about just how bad it hurt to be up on all four legs and how bad it hurt to be moving them and how shaky he was.
"Learn about... wot... around... this place?" he fairly panted out. "Your cabin... is pretty... bare."
Light above! The pain was shooting up and down his hindlegs as though someond had razors running races inside of them! The lightning was forking its way up through his hindquarters and through his spine. He wanted to call his ability, but he wasn't entirely certain he had the strength for even that. Also, Elias was evil. He might need to be able to use it later. For now the colt grit his teeth and continued to carefully follow the man.

"There's more to the Josiggy Marsh than my cabin," Elias said sharply as they walked outside in the sunlight. "I've seen a lot in my time here, but I haven't seen it all. We can start with anything. Maybe you want to learn to navigate so you don't lose your way and get so close to the Lowlands. Without wanting to, that is. When you're a little stronger, and your footing's a little better, we'll start going out so you can learn to recognize quickmud and quicksand. Of course, we're always going to be learning about the plants and animals as we see them. There's a lot to know about this place. It's a good place to lure a big group of people, if you know the area. Let's you pick them off one at a time, and eliminate the threat. Why, a well-versed 2 out here could probably trap and hurt, or even kill a Queen if that queen doesn't know what they're doing. That sound like something you might be interested in, kid?"

The colt listened carefully as the other man spoke and they continued their slow, easy steps away from the cabin. There was pain shooting up through all of his legs, a needle point prickling that told him he'd been too long without movement. He continued to grit his teeth, almost desperately clinging to Elias' words to help him stave off the full effects of the pain.
"Yes..." he sort of hissed out between clenched teeth. The things the canine was describing were exactly the sort of things he desperately wanted to know how to do. Those were the things he and Shin had....
The sudden thought about his twin seized up his legs and he gave a small, inarticulate cry as his body collapsed to the ground. He pressed his face against the spongy soil, willing Elias to look away and not see the tears that were streaming down his face as his whole body quivered in pain.
It took a few minutes to regain control of his limbs, but, painfully, he began to lever himself back up to his feet. He really just hoped to pretend the whole little episode hadn't even happened.

Elias watched the equine struggle. He'd already resolved not to help Rai up in these times. If it had been him, well, he'd probably have bitten someone for trying to help him up for one thing, and for another, it would hurt a part of him to know that someone felt like they had to pity him and give him a hand up.
"You're going to fall, and this is all going to hurt, lad. It will hurt in more ways than one. Think what you want right now, everybody hurts, everybody stumbles, and everybody falls down. The important thing isn't that you fell, Rai. The important thing is that you got back up. I don't think you're a quitter. I think you're a fighter, and you're going to fight all this. Am I right?" He let the colt catch back up to him before he started walking again. "Something else I think about you. I think that someday you're going to find the &*$#@ that did this and make them pay." He said that with something of a fierce grin.

At the beginning of the man's speech, Rai put his ears back against his bare head. Oh, man, like he needed a moral lesson right now! He needed painkillers! Or alcohol! Hadn't someone made their life a living oblivion with the careful and practiced use of alcohol? Maybe he should aim for that someday.
Still... he was secretly flattered that Elias believed in his fighting spirit and he followed carefully after the man. He was doing his best to ignore the pain racking his body now, but it was -much- worse than before his fall. Small beads of sweat began to stand out on his hide even as he continued in his attempts to ignore it.
"Of course... I will..." the boy panted out, forcing each leg to respond in turn. "Why... do you... care... anyway?" Rai asked in short, terse outbursts of words. It was the best he could manage just then.

"Maybe I want to make sure you were worth saving," El told him. More than anything, though El wouldn't tell him this right now, it was because he was seeing more and more of himself in the kid. It wouldn't surprise him one bit if the colt ended up working his way through the ranks in the Court of Hearts. Elias didn't know a lot about Courts of the other flavors of Cards, but the reputation most Hearts had led him to believe that this rehab would be a picnic compared to the court there. Bunch of sadists is what El had heard. Of course, he knew that other suits had heard of Clubs being mentally feeble, and he knew that wasn't true. Maybe Rai could tell him someday. HE wasn't going back to the courts, that was for sure.
"I figure we'll get to the edge of the wood over there and head back, Rai. Quicksand starts to crop up over there, and we don't want to deal with any more of that right now."
((are we going with more of this day, or moving to something a little later?))

The little green colt snorted in derision at the adult's reply, but he couldn't think of a clever comeback just then. Moving still hurt a little too much to sharpen his wit, and instead it began to dull his senses. He gave a small nod and low grunt in agreement with Elias' decision; it wasn't as though he could argue to go on further anyway. He was in so much pain, he didn't even want to think.
As they reached the edge and slowly began to turn around, the boy felt his legs threaten to give out beneath him again. Remembering the amount of pain awarded him at that last tumble, he locked up his spindly legs and simply swayed for a long moment his tail stiffening and acting as a balance for the rest of his body. When he finally regained his balance-- and took a breath; he hadn't realized he'd been hold his-- he slowly moved after the canine again. This bit.
(( We can move on, unless there's any other wisdom El has for Rai... hehe ))

MORE LATERNESS!
". . .so if you're ever in doubt, pick up a rock or something, and give it a heave," El said, scooping up a paw sized rock and flinging it onto the ground, where it wobbled and sank. "Of course, you want to gingerly test it even if the rock floats, because sometimes the dirt or sand on top dries out and acts like thin ice over a lake."
"Now, you see that plant there? What can you tell me about that one?" El had started quizzing Rai on what he had been teaching ever since the colt got his legs working right again. It was partly to keep Rai attentive, and partly to teach him. Rai would make a fine protege, El thought. He was driven, he'd proven that he was tough, and he had similar thoughts to Elias himself. If they could start making some good contacts, then they could be well on their way to getting their problems with the dirty Lowlanders wrapped up.
