Shinrai dropped his arm down again and his leather sleeve fell down to cover the appendage again. It was obviously another practiced motion and gave little doubt that the stallion had and would continue to keep that hand hidden. "I'm sure something can be arranged, but only after Temmin okays you working again." Just on the positive side of noncommittal, Rai was desperate to keep hope from screaming suddenly up and through him. Even though Bernard's list of accomplishments already sounded like a list of near miracles, he couldn't let himself hope. Not yet. Though the feeling began to worm its way up into his heart.
"Little to fear of me sharing this with the world." Just that quiet statement for Gaston and the other would-be hecklers; nothing more.
He thought about Bernard's previous activities and wondered at how he should go on now. "Jack quests will likely not be a problem, though I will certainly want to approve the incoming choices." With the limited number of King spots, however, it seemed unwise to give over his few final spots without a close inspection of who would fill the slot. Still... his Quest for Sekhmet had been rather long and drawn out, especially after thinking over his own quest. Neverthless... it had the desired effect, and that was good enough.
"Of course, I don't mind," he answered easily. "I don't want to tire you, however..." A statement to give Bernard an option to kick him out if needed.

"Well, I wouldn't mind seeing if I could work something out for you...I should be right enough within a week or two."
He smiled lightly and watched the Queen's practiced looking gesture of hiding his arm. He would have a look at that arm...something about the way the Queen had reacted...hinted to Bernard that it just might actually be a magical issue...something this interesting was rare...
He kept his face calm, however, nodding to Rai's next statement.
"Of course, I never have jurisdiction over the candidates until they are sent to me. The aspiring jacks make an appointment with Dymphna, she'll deliver the notices to you and if they seem promising, you send them back to Dymphna. She'll then set up appointment times, and they'll come to see me and get the quest. I would never think to bring in new Court members without the approval of the Queen first...your Majesty."
He gave the Queen a grin and raised his eyebrow.
"Don't think that I'm going to lord seniority over you, you are still my Queen. Oh thank the Hills, I need tea..."
He waved a hand lightly and a small blue orb shot out of his fingertips, slipping under the door and zooming away.
"I'm not too tired, do you have any other questions, your majesty?"

Rai gave a small nod as he listened, not because he knew all of that, but because it all made sense and managed to relieve his fears. He'd never brought a Jack into the Court; his only King choice had been Sekhmet and that was a fairly recent quest completion. It was a relief to know that he wouldn't lose control of the Court; not that he was truly afraid that Bernard would attempt a coup. Or Gaston, for that matter. Severus.... Severus was a dark horse. He needed to meet with the man. Just another item for his mental list of all sorts of things to do.
Other questions? Yes, he should have made a written list. Still, at least one other thing occurred to him now, though he was a little hesitant to bring it up. He wasn't certain how the other man would view it. "I hope you don't mind me intruding," a hint to his tone implied that this question would come now or later. "Rumours of your exploit run rampant through the Palace. And then some. If there hadn't been serving girls previously likely to faint at the sight of the rather notorious King Bernard, they would certainly swoon now. "Wot happened?" Little question to wot he was referring.

Bernard was relieved to see that his Queen had accepted what he'd said, he wanted the new Queen to feel accepted in his own Court. He would do his personal best to help Rai whenever he needed it.
The next question though...
"Ah...that." Bernard murmured...voice dropping as his right hand edged up to his empty eye socket unconsciously. He suddenly seemed to notice the gesture and pulled his hand back down quickly.
"I'm not sure if you know any of the...past issues that centered around Serafino's family...and I won't go into that now."
He looked toward the wall, sighing heavily and wishing the Stallion had asked any other question.
"In short, my brother...Serafino's father...murdered Serafino and tried to run for it. I managed to locate him with a faulty transport spell that I do not recommend you use unless you want your leg to snap like mine did, and attacked him like an idiot instead of waiting for back-up."
His shoulders drooped slightly and he leaned back, his side smarting horribly where the halberd had bitten into him.
"I managed to kill him with a few spells, but...he wasn't anything to laugh at, he was the King prior to me...he knew how to fight...Temmin assured me of his death and the innkeeper assured us that he had been alone the whole time...I'm fairly certain it was merely an issue of bitterness. Though as soon as I am able again, I will be setting some protective spells around the windows of your suite, my Queen..."
Bernard's previously happier posture had gone, thoughts of the fight and what the reality of it meant occupying his thoughts.

The stallion listened quietly giving a small understanding nod here and there to verify that he had heard and was still listening. Something wasn't lining up, but the stallion wasn't quite certain wot. It all made sense; it made -perfect- sense. The angry, vengeaful father finally achieves his own particular brand of justice by killing his arrogant, and power-hungry son. Still, something was....
"Did Blaine know--" he cut himself off suddenly, cursing his curiousity for causing him to begin to blurt something out without even thinking about it first. He rarely did that and he mentally kicked himself around his own mind for doing so now.
Bernard had just been through a long and difficult, albeit admittedly stupid, ordeal and the Queen questioning wot had occurred was not likely to be well received. Though now the man was wondering hard about his question. Blast it. And Bernard was the best source for information... but it seemed harsh and cruel to ask now when everything was so fresh.

His Queen's expression was slightly confused and his next question...well, half-question, caused Bernard to wince slightly... He really wished the topic would be allowed to lie but...if his Queen needed to know.
"Did he know, what, my Queen?"
He murmured, wishing that he had just let it go. His head was starting to ache and his features felt tight. His hand drifted almost unconsciously up to the gaping hole in his face and he turned away, trying to keep himself under control.
His head began to throb slightly at the temples, he knew this would leave him with a monster of a headache...
"If there is a question you need answered, you know that's what I'm here for..."
He rested his face on his left hand and let his bangs obscure his features, he would rather not be seen until he got his expressions back under control.

Rai slipped his mask back in place for now so he could determine how to pursue the conversation. He pretended not to see Bernard turn away to hid his missing eye. It took effort, however, to not reach up to touch the bone encircling his right eye. They shared the shame of that, at least.
"Your job right now," the man answered sternly, though a smile lingered at the edge of his lips; a smile that came nowhere near touching his eyes. "Is to get well. We need you back on your feet and recovered."
Still.... the thought was niggling at him now. He absently tapped his bone fingers together, the noise loud in the quiet room. He didn't seem to notice, however; the hand was out of sight and that seemed good enough for the Queen. "Teleportation spells." The words were said quietly and thoughtfully. "Did Blaine know any?" Committed to the conversation now, he would push through even though it pained him to see Bernard's agony.

Bernard lifted his head again after a moment, looking up to find his Queen putting that "blank" face back on...it was oddly comforting...Serafino had used to do something like that...
He bowed his head lightly to Rai. "Yes, your Majesty, I understand." He knew that the statement doubled as slight concern and an order. Queen Rai would be needing assistance and the faster Bernard healed, the faster he could actually be of any use.
The sound of the bone tapping together made Bernard glance around quickly for a second before he realized that it was his Queen...he had thought for a moment...but no, how could the Hisstor have gotten in without Rai noticing, that was stupid...still...
Bernard let out a snort of derisive laughter at the question.
"Blaine, know teleportation spells? Hills, no. Blaine was lucky if he could cast a simple light spell, magic and my brother didn't really get along. His strong point was smashing the other person into the ground before they could cast any spells." He gestured to himself and laughed dryly. "As evidenced, though he could fly fast enough that his friends used to accuse him of being a Spade...before he nearly beat them to death..."
He sighed and leaned back.
"Besides, there are only two teleportation spells that exist, to my knowledge....the one that I used...I know he didn;t use that one because he hadn't suffered the side effects...and the one that I've seen a Tulgey mage use...but he first had to change his species. Also something Blaine had not done."

"Well, blast." Actually, other words came to mind, but the stallion was too distracted to even curse. A fast flyer, though. Would that be enough?
The same suspicions didn't seem to occur to Bernard, but Rai had a growing sense of unease. Obviously there was an answer, right? Something to explain how Blaine could get to the Palace, sneak in, kill Serafino, get back out, and make it back to the Highlands so quickly that Bernard could find him at his hotel as well as the other avian being able to recover enough to give the King a real fight.
There was an obvious answer that Rai didn't want to think about it. He gave a small sigh. He was here to ask Bernard to be his King, not dig up random plots.
He had to ask. He couldn't help it.
"Was Blaine very tired when you first met up with him?" Was it even possible to fly the distance in that amount of time? The guards said that the alarm had come up almost immediately; Fino's body had still been warm.
