Well, blast....
Bernard let a grin slip.
"That's an understatement, I wish the flight had tired him out further, I could have used the break...or less breaking, as the case may be."
He finally got himself under enough of a semblance of control that he could raise his head and give his Queen a serious look.
"He was exhausted-looking and I was lucky that he wasn't as up to par as he could have been. Otherwise I'm sure he would still be about and my head would be on a pole somewhere."
His shoulders hunched as it finally sank in that his Queen was looking for a second party to blame...was Rai really that paranoid? Even if Blaine had enlisted help, no one he ever considered a friend would ever turn up here again.
"My brother...wasn't very good at keeping friends after his fall from power, if that's what you're afraid of. He alienated himself and lost most of his money and followers, especially after his daughter died. I wouldn't wory about someone coming to avenge his death, this was purely personal and not an attack on the Court itself, he..." Bernard's words caught in his throat for a moment and his voice shook a little. "He even took the crown, I...you don't need to worry. Even if someone did come to avenge him, as I said, they would just off me."
He shrugged a little and tried to smile...it was harder than he had expected.

If he'd had his normal ears, they would have flattened. It was a nice little reassurance from Bernard, but, even then, not entirely reassuring.
"That would be a problem," the equine said seriously. "We've just put a lot of time and effort into putting you back on the path to wellness; having someone slip back in to kill you would make all of that a waste of resources." Despite the near blankness of the words, there was evidence of some emotion in the grey-green eyes. The stallion continued almost thoughtfully. "I think we need to assign you a bodyguard." He gave a small nod, as though this would take care of all of his worries. He would have to go through the rosters of the Court to pick someone, unless, of course, the other man had a preference.
Something still niggled at the back of Rai's mind, but he tried to push it away. It was a long flight from here to the Highlands, wasn't it? Not that long. Probably. Maybe.
.... He needed to find a bird to do some tests.

Bernard tried to bury the emotions and respond with somehting snappy to his Queen's comment about wasting medical care on him, but his mind couldn't wander that far that fast. He hadn't wished to discuss the events that had passed for quite awhile, and his chest felt tight.
He simply nodded in response, swallowing thickly and wishing the Equine would leave, he was beginning to feel ill.
He gave a little half-laugh at the suggestion of a body-guard and shook his head.
"I can practically assure you that I'm not worth the effort. I'm not in need of a bodyguard, never have been." He shrugged and gave a lop-sided grin, though his eye still reflected the pain he was feeling. Squinting slightly and looking anywhere except at the person he was speaking to.
He could tell the Queen was still worried. Hills... He had never imagined that his new Queen would be so hard to reassure.

Due to Rai's paranoid nature, though he would argue he was simply being careful, it was unlikely 'mere' words could completely convince him there was no danger, and, in any case, it was always a good idea to be prepared for the unexpected. That was how he had survived so far and it was an unlikely habit to change.
Bernard suddenly seemed to wilt and it reminded the stallion that he had stayed far longer than he meant, or, likely, had time to. Still, he could hardly exit on the current feeling of their conversation.
The stallion leaned forward, suddenly earnest, all joking put aside. "To the contrary, Bernard. You are most definitely worth the effort." He didn't elaborate, didn't add qualifications to the statement. But his gaze was serious and it was obvious he well and truly meant the words. "I'm surprised your doctor hasn't kicked me out," he said suddenly, rising with those words. "I've not only kept you up, I've stressed you further. That shouldn't be allowed." How he wished he could promise he would not do so again, but... he had no guarantees. It would be a promise just waiting to be broken.
"Take it easy, Bernard. I look forward to the day you can return to duty." He gave the Highlander a brief smile, but it certainly didn't reach his eyes. He waited for just a moment to see if the other man had anything further to say or any questions to ask, but, barring that, he would make his exit.

The earnest quality to the Stallion's voice relaxed Bernard slightly, though he was still unnerved by the bodyguard idea...ah well...
"Allowed or not, it's important that you know what has transpired, your Majesty." The King murmured, nodding slightly and laying back down fully with a sigh.
"I'll try to make that day as soon as possible, Hills knows I hate being stuck in here, especially when a friend of mine has brought me quite a few things from the Bog that I want to look into. Have a good day, your Majesty...call on me if you need anything. I'll...be here."
He managed a smile at the last bit, but as soon as the Stallion had left it would vanish.
His stomach felt like it was made of lead...Blaine...all this talk of him...
He had killed his own brother...who had been trying to kill him, he reminded himself but, it just...didn't seem to matter. When had Blaine changed so much, and how had he let it happen? Hills...why...?

It was a thoughtful Queen who exited the room. It took a moment before he realized that his newest quarry was waiting nearby and the stallion turned suddenly on the doctor.
"Temmin. Bernard is to be given as much rest and care as he possibly needs. That means you are to kick out anyone and everyone who overstays their welcome, tires him, or unduly stresses him. That includes me barring something of absolute import." The rather harsh words were abruptly softened by a wry grin. "And I apologize for overstaying my own welcome. You are doing an excellent job."
Still, the stallion was distracted. He had other things to accomplish today, but he might as well take up Bernard's suggestion and speak with Gaston and Severus. He made a small sound in the back of his throat, a thoughtful noise which would prove he wasn't attending Temmin's response as closely as he should. He would send messages to Gaston and Severus requiring their presences, at different times, very shortly.
