Power. Rank jumping. It always turned out to be something like that if you wanted to change the world. Why couldn't a regular person do it? Were they too small to be heard?
"Well then, at least you know you have a goal to reach, and then you have another goal to reach after that one. For now though, you should probably take a break." Rocky shrugged. He supposed when a problem was this huge he should take a step back from it. It seemed that if you were too close to a problem you should take a new look at it.
Of course Rocky never really followed his own advice. He pushed himself to the point of fixation, and rarely took a break from his research. After he was able to fly, he had no idea what he would do. He had one goal, what came after was a dream.

"A break...Probably would do me some good. Though...um...what do you do when you take a break?"
Certainly, she took breaks to eat and sleep and finish other business other than her work. Still, as of late, she didn't have much to keep her attention from her research. She could count on one paw the number of books she had that didn't relate to diseases and most of the friends that she kept in touch with from her younger years, if she met up with them to 'take a break,' they would probably scoff at the idea and get back to their research.
"Sure, I can take a break, but that usually means a five or ten minute breather before getting back to the grind. Guess that's not too healthy for me, considering what I work with. That and the all work, no play idea. Anyway...any thoughts? Maybe an extended break'll get me thinking strong again."

Rocky blinked. Apparently he wasn't as bad as he thought he was. As much as he researched he did take considerable breaks every once in a while. The house was his most recent "extended" break. Even though that was mostly because he was scared for a week straight after that fantastic encounter.
"Don't you just investigate things for the fun of it? Like... I don't know. I investigated that house because of... well plan curiosity. I wanted to have some fun, and maybe reach a goal or two. Isn't there something you'd like to do that was completely random and uncalled for? Like going out for ice cream or something?" Rocky blinked at the words coming out of his mouth. Had he really just said that?
It was nice to know he wasn't completely obsessed with his goal of flying. He still wanted that dream to come true though, but at least it could wait a little while.

Geez, did she feel awkward. It wasn't that she was completely anti-social or hated to go outside or anything. It was more often that Ataxia got so into her work that she tired herself out, went to bed, then got back to it when she wasn't completely drained. It still sounded weird, not having much to do otherwise...
"Well, I sometimes go out to Capital City to look around and stuff. Though I usually don't have much money to buy anything, really...though I really should do some exploring when I'm not burning the midnight oil. As much as I'm familiar with this place, walking around at night here, not my idea of a good time."
It was decided, at least in her head. She would get out more, do some exploring, meet some more people, take a break longer than ten minutes to get something to eat. The way Rocky was looking at her, she really must have been a basket case, the way she kept working her tail off without any brain breaks.

"How about we go out tomorrow?" Rocky said quite suddenly. He wasn't quite sure why he even offered. Didn't he have something specific to do tomorrow? Did it actually matter in the long run? No. Especially if it had something to do with that woman. He could live without her.
The raccoon's tail twitched with thought. "It really is dangerous at night. I mean, it's like that that anywhere, but sometimes it gets pretty sketchy in Corvistowne I suppose. As for Capital City, I actually go there sometimes for work purposes, and I happened to run into some pretty interesting people." A horse, a dog, and a set of ladies were the first to come to mind. Kelasia and Theofilus were interesting and all, but they weren't that sort of interesting. "I actually put an ad in one of the papers to see if anyone wanted to give up their wings. Sadly... heh."

Tomorrow? Her tail wagged; it had obviously made up its mind. Of course, Xia took a bit more time to decide on an answer. Ice cream sounded good...But I have work to do! All work and no play...but what about the fleshrot experiment? That's not even close to being done. Didn't I just decide that I would take an extended break and not work myself to death? Just a reason for being lazy...Shut up, brain.
"Ice cream sounds fantastic! I haven't had ice cream in a long while. What time, you think?"
Oh, it was so exciting, making plans to go out. It didn't happen too often, especially not with another person. Today was easily one of the best days ever.
"Well, reason I don't like being around at night is 'cause that's when the corpse carters are around. And really, I'd rather avoid them like the plague. Though I must admit, Capital City's a great place to go to meet some interesting folks. Sometimes I go there just to people watch."
Ataxia's enthusiasm went down a notch as Rocky mentioned the ad put into the paper. That must've been one heck of a want ad. She could understand why there were no takers. A bird without wings would be like her without a tail. Still, if it would make him happy...
"Tough luck, Rocky...If it makes you feel any better, if I had wings, I'd give them to you."

"Does mid-afternoon sound like a plan? I mean, it's not like we can have it in the morning or anything." Rocky said with a smile. Ice cream. He hadn't had ice cream since his sixteenth birthday. Weird. He didn't think it had been that long. Oh well. At least he had a chance to fix that mistake.
"Eh. Well, you know. It's not like I expected a miracle. It's just a long shot that cost me five dollars a month. Maybe one day a long time from now someone'll answer it." He shrugged, "I guess I can wait though. I'm still testing things to see if they work. Getting wings from a living subject would be a last resort."
He hated to think that his research wouldn't pay off. The simplest solution to his problem would be to find a live set of wings and attach them to himself. He just had no one who would have live and donateable wings.

"Mid-afternoon definitely sounds like a plan. Should we meet up here, then? I'm not sure if I know where your lab is, and I'm not too great with things like directions or maps."
She felt like she had sucked in a tank of helium and was floating to the ceiling. Ice cream with a friend. What better way to take a break from research? Especially if it included strawberry ice cream, the best kind of ice cream there was, in her opinion. That and when it dripped on her armbands, it blended in.
The anchor that kept her down on the ground was the fact that Rocky was having a rough spot in his research. She wanted to help, but her research didn't have much to do with his except for maybe the effects of the immune system on transplants.
"You know, maybe someone around Corvistowne who's got some backing in anatomy, skeletal structures and muscle and the like, maybe someone in those fields could help you with your research. Sometime, I'll have to ask around. You never know. Maybe something someone else in this town is working on could help with what you're doing."

Rocky couldn't help but grin like a madman. Ice cream it was then. That would be a fantastic break from all the crazy and overwhelming research.
"I have asked around to some degree. Most people just look at me funny and send me on their way. Apparently I'm the only raccoon who ever wanted to fly." Rocco shrugged at the statement. He knew his dream was a little crazy, but honestly it was possible wasn't it? They lived in a place where magic was possible, so why not a flying raccoon? It's not as if it was that completely and utterly abnormal. If there were half bird and half cats running around, how strange would a flying raccoon be?
People still disbelieved his dream though. "I guess I just need to find the right person who's willing to deal with me I suppose. Not many people want to look up from their research to deal with someone else. My current lab partner is an example of that."

Ataxia tilted her head a bit. What was so strange about a raccoon wanting to fly? Just because they were born without wings didn't mean that they couldn't have that kind of goal. Even if it was a little out of the ordinary, it shouldn't have been a reason for someone to deny another help in the research, especially if it was someone's specialty anyway.
"Hey, you never know. There might have been another raccoon who wanted to fly some time before you. It's not too strange a dream, least not in my opinion. Looking up from the sky must be a great view, especially at sunsets. Sunsets must be gorgeous from the sky."
For a moment, Ataxia imagined herself with feathery black and green wings, soaring above the buildings in Corvistowne, gazing out at the purple-pink clouds against the orange sunset sky...then promptly crashing into a tree once her attention got away from where she was going. Yes, staying on the ground was probably better for a wandering mind like hers.
"You know, I might not be too well-read in the subjects you're working on, but I might be able to help you gather some research and the like. Might be a good break from my own research, and getting to dip my paws into something new, I might get some inspiration from it."
