This was the best day of her life. She had come back from Court to visit Minh and Thalia, an enormous box of assorted homemade pastries in hand (gathered from the countless recipe books she had gotten on loan from the library) as an appeasement gift, and they weren't even there. Elyse didn't even seem to be scurrying about in the woodwork. It was curiously, blissfully silent, like the world had been unburdened of some great and terrible evil. This, she thought, is why all children should be summarily put to death. Children, and many mad scientists. The apartment was more or less the same disaster it always was. Mnem didn't bother attempting to clean it. She was no longer there often enough for it to be a high priority. Her room at Court was lovely and well-organized and her plants were happy, and that was what mattered. She put some coffee on. She was going to attend to a bit of business in the City, and then head back to the palace. She just hoped Idril was watering her plants properly. If anything died while she was away, Mnem planned on setting fire to the library's romance section. She called into the empty space, "Monty, fetch momma's slippers!" Getting nothing in response but a threatening growl, Mnem settled into the couch, and kicked back.

Darrien walked nerviously towards the apartment. He missed her...it had been a long time since he saw her and he hoped that she was home today. He had alot to discuss with her. As he approached the door he took a deep breath and tried to gather his composure, quickly he rapped on the door. Gods he was more nervious than the day that with Tuuli and the surprise engagement, but he had to talk to Mnem. He had to tell her the truth and what his goals were, he just hoped that she would not send him out and never speak to him again. As he waited he looked down at himself with disgust...she always looked so pretty and her human form was just delightful...he wished that in all of his new found spare time he could have at least achieved his next form or at least gone up in rank, but alas he had not acomplished either and time and money were currently not on his side.

The coffee finished perking just as the knock on the door sounded. She paused, thought for a brief second about which to attend to first, and then quickly made herself a cup of coffee before getting downstairs and to the door. It was probably just Minh or one of the brats, anyway; likely they locked themselves out of the building, in a typical Minh-and-the-brats move.
When she opened the door, the difference between who she had been expecting and who was actually there was so jarring that it took a moment for her brain and reality to properly realign.
"Darrien," she said, eyebrows raised. Well, this was unexpected, but not unpleasant. Certainly preferable to her roommate and the spawn. "It's been a while." She offered him the cup of coffee and waved him inside. "Come in, sit down, try not to lose a leg to Monty."

He looked into her eyes when she opened the door. Gods she was even more lovely then the last time he had seen her. He silently cursed himself for not bringing her some thing like he always had. Surely he could have afforded a flower, but he knew better than to think like that. He was becoming poorer by the day and everything he had went to his cost of living and it was adding up quickly.
"Yeah..." he said as he took the coffee cup and quickly walked inside, he did not look about nervously like he usually did when he came over. The mutant bander always scared him and he tried to avoid the creature when ever possible.
He looked down at the brown liquid as he sat down on the couch. He did not really want the drink and he had only taken it out of force of habit. He was always polite as could be and to her he was no exception, but he was still extremely nervous.
He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out and he closed it again. His leg bobbed up and down as it moved of its own accord and his tail was deathly still. He rubbed his hands together and tried to gather the words that he had come to tell her.

Mnem got herself another cup of coffee as Darrien twitched nervously on the couch. She watched over the rim of her cup, wondering what had him so apprehensive and tense. Perhaps he'd murdered someone and was looking for an alibi or a way out of the City. She nearly laughed out loud at the thought. Darrien probably couldn't muster up the malice to swat at a fly. She liked that sort of behavior in a man. Amiable and compliant. She would consider at attitude unacceptable in a woman (she spent a rather odd amount of time wishing that there were procedures available that would instill Kel with a permanent and functional spine), but in Darrien it was rather endearing.
"You haven't touched your coffee," she said, lightly. She pointed to the top of a bookcase were Monty was lurking, eying them dangerously from the shadows. "Let it sit too long and Monty shall think it's up for grabs. It also senses fear. Why so pensive?"

He glanced up at the book case at the bander and for the moment did not think anything of the mutated creature. There were other things on his mind that frightened him more. He clasped his hands together and took a deep breath. It was now or never and never was not an option any more. He turned to Mnem and exhaled slowly as he continued to gather his courage.
"Mnem...I...have a lot to tell you..." He began slowly and he took another deep breath and let it out slowly. He looked into her eyes at the soothing pink iris that filled them and he was over come with clam. "Mnem," he whispered and leaned in to kiss her, "I love you...and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but there are things that I feel that I need to tell you...things that I am ashamed of" he lingered in front of her face nervous to say any more before seeing her reaction.

Mnem looked at him expectantly. She did not do well with spontaneous outpourings of emotion, unless that emotion was some derivative of anger, and she thought it best to just wait it out. She felt rather like one of the men in Helena and Iphis's awful, awful books who had to comfort their hysterical girlfriends when they inevitably had a breakdown. Oddest sensation. She was nearly overcome by the desire to take Darrien out for shoe-shopping and an appletini. It was quite possibly the closest her brain could get to compassion.
She sipped at her coffee, wondering what exactly he had done that he considered so shameful. Had he killed someone? He certainly sounded grave enough to have done so. It was, they said, always the quiet ones. If that were the case, perhaps she had better get him a massage after the appletini.
"Go on," she said, curiously, but not unkindly.

He took another deep breath and then as he opened his mouth the words just started flowing as if they would never stop.
"Mnem...I consider myself to be an honest man, but I in fact have lied to every one...and it is tearing me up. Nothing was suppose to happen this way and I certainly did not plan for any of this to happen." He took another deep breath. "Mnem, I was promised to some one else. Some one I did not care for and out of my damned able pride I accepted it as I did so many things in my life...until I met you." He looked up into her eyes and they looked as if they would tear up just at the thought of her.
He reached over and took the mug from her hands and set it down on the table and clasped her hands into his own as he moved closer to her. "Mnem, you have changed my life. You have shown me so many things that I never even thought were possible. And if it was not for you I would be back in the lakes this time in three weeks and been married to some one I did not love." He brought the top of her hands to his mouth and softly kissed them. "Mnem I will give every thing that I have to you and only you if you would only be mine..."
He looked into her eyes again and continued talking. "I do not have much to give any more. Upon telling my father about my decision he has disowned me and I have been thrown on the streets, which is fine, I knew that it would happen, and I struggle to make it day by day with the small amount of money that I have." he looked down at her hands again hoping that she thought that he was not doing all of this as a last resort.
"I plan on going to the courts for work...so that I may take care of you and give you all that you desire. Mnem...I love you, please say that you will be mine in light of all of this" He looked up at her eyes again hoping that he would see anything at all in them that would clue him in on what she was thinking at that moment.

It was quite a bit of information to digest at once. Her first instinct was to get the hell out and avoid emotional awkwardness all-together (Vishne's ridiculous vapid poetry popped into her head: we'll hobble along/on our broken tricycle of despair/running away from our feelings/and getting nowhere. For the love of everything unholy, she wished she had beaten that child more.), but apparently her brain was betraying her and successfully processing pity.
She patted his hand. She did not quite know what to say about Darrien's former fiancee. His level of devotion was a bit bemusing, but not creepy in the Helena-on-the-rape-path kind of way. She could definitely work with this.
"You're more than welcome," she said, "to stay here while you find your footing." She tilted her head and cocked a small, crooked smile. "I would be more than happy to have you."

He smiled at her and grasped her tightly in both his arms at her words. It was a relief to him. He loved this woman so much. His breath quickened and he pulled back and looked into her eyes. Before he could even think he was quickly closing the gap between their faces and he took her in a deep and passionate kiss. He wanted her like he had never wanted any one before in his life, but one thing held him back, after every thing was said and done would she really be his alone?
He pulled away from Mnem and looked into her eyes. "Be mine and mine alone?" His eyes were full of yearning and the fur around his neck bristled with anticipation and excitement. He wanted all of her...not just the tid bits he had experienced before, but he wanted to feel all of her, right then and right now.
