Note: Part one of my extremely long Xylia fanfiction. >_>;; I understand if no one reads it, lol. Because of it's length, I've broken it up into two segments for easier reading. ^_^ Enjoy.
Author: Vyn
Characters: Xylia, Thallak, Oddr, Se
Setting: After Xylia returns from The Wood - Present. Capital City, Avington - Corvistowne
Word Count: 973
(Making Changes)
Looking back, Xylia kicked herself for not seeing the obvious.
Se had been slowly sliding off of his metaphorical rocker from the very first day they'd met, but she'd been so happily blinded by his kindness that she hadn't stopped for a second to think his 'quirks' might become problematic one day. He was a little off, yes, a little paranoid, and considerably overprotective of that strange little stone... but all of that had seemed relatively harmless at the time. Nothing that Xylia could have snubbed him for.
Even once his quirks became more pronounced and his struggle to look 'normal' became more and more obvious, Xylia didn't think twice about abandoning the friendship they had.
Every now and then, however, his little mask of normality would slip enough for Xylia to get true glimpses into his sanity, or lack thereof. That should have been a warning sign enough, those days when he seemed as if he couldn't really tell if she was there... or if he was just talking to a figment of her. Looking back, Xylia should have debated his need for proper help instead of easing him through those moments and reminding him that she was still very much tangible.
Regardless of these little slips, though, everything had seemed alright. Good enough, at least, that Xylia couldn't have dreamed of Se doing any real harm to his loved ones, his friends.
And then Xylia's regular visits with Se were abruptly interrupted by Seki's disappearance. As the self-proclaimed protector of the weak and defender of peace, Xylia couldn't dream of sitting by and doing nothing while her fragile half-brother was lost in one of the most dangerous regions on the map. Besides, as a trained fighter with such amazing swords, there wasn't much of anything stopping her from going in, rescuing Seki, and getting out.
Except that nothing ever seemed to go as smoothly as Xylia envisioned it. Her simple 'rescue mission' quickly had Xylia in need of rescue. Luckily, Thal and Oddr had been there and Seki had managed to get out of The Wood in due time, but the trip had left Xylia with a lengthy recovery time and a good deal of permanent scars before she could even think of returning home to the Capital.
It was then, Xylia figured, that Se must have taken that final plunge from sanity. Or, perhaps, her absence just made it harder for him to remember to put his 'mask' of normality back on while she was around.
Whatever the case, everything was different when she came back. He was jumpier, prone to fits of irrational paranoia or anger, and had a harder time telling she wasn't a ghost than ever before.
After the first couple of visits upon her return, Xylia should have gotten the hint that something was really wrong... but she didn't. She was too happy to see her old friend again, and too concerned about his health to really see the risk she was putting herself in.
The assault nevertheless came as a surprise. He'd been a little shaken when she'd first arrived and had required a bit more reassurance than usual that she was, indeed, still alive and quite well. It wasn't until everything had settled down that, in due time, everything went wrong. Halfway through what Xylia considered an odd, but pleasant, conversation, Se's demeanor abruptly changed and, without any other warning, he pounced.
Xylia was too stunned to fight back at first and by the time she realized that it wasn't a sick joke he was playing on her, that he genuinely intended to do what he was insinuating, it was far too late. Her pleas for relent were immediately ignored, forcefully denied by the delusional mix who desperately repeated that he had to make her his for her own good. That was all the twins needed to hear to lose their tenative hold on their patience.
There would never be a day when she'd be able to forget the way Se's face contorted when her swords had morphed into two very angry Josiggy men. The fight that broke out between them, however, gave Xylia just enough time to recover from her shock and regain her bearings. The moment Se went down for the first time, Xylia forced the boys back into their sword forms and booked it out of the apartment.
---
Xylia was quick to get home and shower, but even after she'd cleaned up the physical mess there was no ignoring the emotional taint the experience left on her. Regardless, she did her best to keep herself distracted and vaguely sane over the course of the next couple weeks. On the rare occasion that she was forced to go out, she found herself jumpier than usual and kept Thallak or Oddr in human form whenever possible while running errands.
By the end of the first week, however, Thallak and Oddr were sick of tip-toeing around the situation. Neither of them were comfortable living in such close proximity with a threat to their summoner.
"We're leaving," Thallak announced suddenly to a dumbfounded Xylia. "We've been waiting around long enough with that danger to society lurking on our doorstep." He looked to Oddr for support and received a hesitant nod. Oddr wasn't usually all too quick to make such a rash and major decision, but it was true. Xylia would benefit from a change of scenery.
There really was no argument for Xylia, the boys knew her desires almost better than she did.
The decision of where to go was left up in the air while they packed and made arrangements vacate the appartment and, in the end, the decision was made for them when the JubJub egg that Thallak had smuggled home with them hatched rather unexpectedly.
Avington became the best decision, with a wealth of trees and plenty of solitude to keep their not-so-presentable pet out of any immediate trouble.
