Word had just reached the ears of the mouse, informing His Majesty of with a witness’s record of what had just taken place at the Heart Court. He had been informed yesterday of what was supposed to happen the next day and sense then the mouse had been on edge. To both of them he had special ties, though the one to The Queen of Hearts was a little closer and stronger than it had ever been with the boy.
There was also the matter of his own kids that were on the way that he would have to contend with. Were his newest litter going to have to grow up knowing that their other parent – to some their mother and to the others their father – was dead. He was not sure if he could live with that thought.
It was all of these consuming and overwhelming thoughts that had brought the mouse to his usual place of refuge. To those who were familiar with the mouse, it was a little known fact, that when the mouse was having a bad day he retreated to the sanction of the rose garden. It was where he liked to sip his coffee and just simply relax.
However, this time the sight of the roses brought him no comfort. If anything they fueled his feelings of hatred and upset.
Being of the rank of The Queen it was a fact of nature that the mouse was well aware of that at any moment anyone could challenge him for his spot in the Court and that more often than not the challenge was one that could be the death of him. After all he had been the one to end Queen Veldmair’s reign.
Sudden it was too much for the mouse to take in. He refused to accept that it was a truth. There was no way that his beloved friend was dead. No! If only the mouse could think it hard and long enough the facts before him would be reversed.
As the small grouping of rose bushes caught the mouse’s eye he narrowed at them, angry at them as if all this was their fault. The innocent plants had been had planted, by his first request as Queen when he had stumbled from the battle field, hurt and injured yet distinctly triumphant. It had resulted from a jesting that had gone on between the Heart and Club years ago, when both had only just entered the Courts and both had been drinking and were probably at that moment more drunk then either cared to admit.
Now they reminded the mouse painfully of his lost friend. Shinrai or Rai to those who knew the man and Whip to those who were more personal with the man. He had been Ader’s one true friend through all the years. After he had lost Mick had been killed all those years back the mouse had never truly gotten close to anyone again, his trust for people had been narrowed. He could almost remember back to when he had first come to the Capital with no real goal in sight, anger had ridden him hard, and friendship was not a thing on his mind. Then that one night he had stumbled across the unconscious equine in the alleyway and from that day forth it seemed like the two of their paths had crossed constantly.
But all of that was changed now. Rai was dead.
Walking over to the rose bush he broke one off, uncaring if he was stabbed in the process by the thorns. Tightening his fist around the fragile flower he slowly crushed it. As his anger mounted so did his control over his temperature ability and as the temperature of the mouse quickly climbed the air around the mouse started to produce visible heat waves. In a matter of moments the rose that he held in his hand started to curl up, blackening around the edges before burning till the rose was nothing but a pile of ashes on the ground.
And it only took a second or two more before the bush did so as well.
Standing there, the bush that had represented more than a friendship to the mouse was now gone, its remains no more than ashes. The ground around the mouse had also become blackened as the grass had followed along on the rose bushes’ fate.
As the sight of the rose bushes’ demise became clear to the mouse through his haze of anger, the realization suddenly struck him deeply. Feeling like he could not breathe Ader collapsed to his knees, tears streaking down his face. His friend, his confidant, and even his unspoken lover, was now no more. He could not even find the ability to voice his pain and hatred for this event that life had brought before him.
He could only weep, soul wrenching sobs wracking his body.
Shinrai, Rai, Whip, even the Self-Righteous #*(%*(#@)#$, as Mnem fondly referred to him, was gone. Forever.
