"No, I'm a very good liar. I just don't choose to expend any sort of effort on you," he snarked back. There was really absolutely no one else (in the family or out of it) that he felt all that comfortable with snarking like this. Usually it was just easier to remain meek and quiet. Sae was overpowering, Ari was just weird, and...well, it was best not to think of how his parents reacted. Really. "I do listen to myself. It sounds lovely. It's just when it comes to your voice that everything gets screwed up and nasty. Or maybe that's just the way you sound normally."
"You know, some times I wonder how any of us actually made it to adulthood alive, what with what our parents did. Or rather, didn't do. You're luck in that you're Vessatha's darling little Jack. Sae had some protection because she was the only girl, but once Vessa grew out of that, it's a miracle she payed enough attention to the rest of us to keep us from dying." Aph shook his head a bit. "Vessa was just so disappointed that her only little girl was such a weirdo. She should have known better, at least when it comes to comparing her to the rest of us."
Aphasia snorted at that observation. "There's that weirdo, Osias. Who is, if you might have noticed, a Diamond. I don't even know why Lysaras keeps him around, he creeps me out."

"Right," Mia retorted right back, "Like the time you told mum you didn't break the watermelon, despite it being all over your face?" He smirked, snickering. Ah, childhood memories - always fun to taunt your siblings with, especially when they didn't have much to taunt back. "You're just jealous that my voice is prettier than yours." The ferret said with a prissy air, then abruptly snickered, breaking it.
"Did? Didn't do." Mia corrected, then sighed. "Yeah, I dunno. Technically they provided us with food and shelter - most of the time - so they didn't do us any harm, but I have to wonder with the way Sae and Ari turned out. I'm waiting for the day that she finds some poor kid to use as her replacement 'perfect child', since none of us ever fit the bill." He twiddled his pen absently, trying to picture said child.. but gave up.
"Him? I don't count him as a Card, let alone a Diamond. He's just fucking weird." Mia stated, his nose wrinkling. Weirdo.

Aphasia laughed at that. "Oh, but I didn't break it! Sae did, and promptly shoved my face in the middle, and since she was eating parts of it and I was already covered in the evidence, I decided to just go ahead and join her. But I didn't break it." The otter smiled smugly at his brother, brushing off the comments about voices. It wasn't Aph's fault if Mia couldn't hear how simply horrible he sounded. So he'd let the mix-Region go on to live his life in willful ignorance.
"Yeah, Vessa never really got her "perfect little girl," did she? I remember those nasty outfits she tried to shove Sae into when we were kids. The pink ones. With the ruffles. And sometimes there were rhinestones or fake pearls." Fortunately, he and his brothers had escaped that indignity, as they were "mere" boys. "You'd think she was from Yarrow for all she values girls over boys. Only, if she was from Yarrow, then I think the three of us with boy-parts would be dead. Or maybe missing said parts." That prompted a full-body shudder from him. He liked his dick.
"Yeah, he's weird. That's why I'd be cautious about anything in Diamond-House, because it might be something from, or for, or about him. Which means we can't exactly go to him for help." Avoid bringing up Mo, avoid bringing up Mo, he didn't feel like having to deal with a sulky sibling. "There's got to be a scholar or something in the Library that can translate it."

"Is that how you managed to get away with that? I'm surprised she didn't haul you out by your ass and lock you up anyways, because that really does sound like a pitiful lie. Sae must have admitted to it." He said doubtfully, trying to remember just how the incident had played out. Mia hadn't been involved with it as he and Ari had tactfully retreated to go play trucks once their mother got involved, but he definitely remembered the yelling and the watermelon guts everywhere.
Mia wrinkled his nose at the mention of the dresses. "I think that was her weird Kahmden background, she was trying to make Saethre into some respectful, mannered child.. but really, she shouldn't have chosen Harlequinn if she wanted kids like that. The idea just sounds impossible." He said, then shrugged. "I think Sae liked it to some extent, at least until she got older and realised how horrible she looked in dresses.. though it was her own fault that she kept getting mud all over them." The ferret snickered, remembering one particular dress that had gone from pure white to pure brown in five minutes flat.
That had been a bad day for all of them.
"I try not to imagine what life would be like with Yarrow parents," He commented. "Ours are bad enough, don't you agree?"
The ferret was somewhat frustrated with the continual talk of Diamonds. He'd tossed it already, hadn't he? What did he have to do to drop the subject, shred it? So he simply didn't respond, and shrugged instead.

"It was more Sae's cackling about how she'd finally gotten her revenge on me that clued her in. Which, I suppose, is one way of saying that Sae admitted to it," he said nonchalantly. Another sheet of paper was looked over, marked, and then set aside into one of the growing (though neat) piles that indicated one thing or another about the contents of the piles. Aph didn't actually know what happened to the papers once they left Mia's office, but he assumed his brother did, and that was good enough for him.
"You know, I never exactly got the feeling that Vessatha chose Harlequinn or anything. From how Quinn's told it, she practically absconded with Vessie and didn't exactly give her much choice in the matter." How the two of them had managed to turn the entire thing into some sort of strangely...loving relationship, or whatever it was called, was an entirely different mystery, and one he didn't like to think about too hard.
"...yeah, I'm just going to erase that thought now. The two of them as Yarrows would be terrifying." He did, however, fold up the sheet of paper in Diamond-tongue and tuck it away into some unseen pouch amongst his many piercings.

"Heh," He replied. "She does that a lot. Cackling, I mean. It freaks me out a bit, I have to admit. Does she have to sound quite so strange all the time? I think she enjoys it.." The ferret wrinkled his nose, wishing more of his siblings - besides Aph - were more along the normal side of life.
"That's what I got, too." Mia replied. As far as he knew, none of them really knew how their parents came to be. Vessatha never spoke of her relationship in direct terms to her children, and while Quinn was willing, coherancy wasn't one of her strongest traits. "Vessatha doesn't seem like the person to be bowled over by someone like that.. but it happened, somehow. I bet she was drunk." He snickered. "I don't see how else it could have worked."
The ferret let out a short laugh. "Got you on that one, bro," He said with a snicker.

"Ari's almost as bad," he said reproachfully. "He just...doesn't cackle. Which is always a good thing, because the world could always do with less cackling otters. Especially when they're related to us." There was a thoughtful pause, and then he shrugged. "Okay, Ari also doesn't spend nearly as much time around here, so I guess that helps mitigate the problem. Or at least the problem of him. Sae likes to be around here a lot, I guess." Or at least she certainly seemed to be around a lot, which was kind of annoying some times. Especially when he wanted to spend more time with Mo, but didn't want the hybrid to see more of his crazy relatives.
"Or maybe Quinn was just a lot more charming when they were younger. You never know, she could have been a regular Cassanova. I'm sure she swept Vessie off of her feet with her charming attitude and derring-do. Maybe sang love songs under her window at night." A long pause, and then he couldn't hold the straight face any longer, and started snickering. Quinn, a regular Cassanova? His crazy mixed-blood parent was just...crazy. Not romantic.
