Oh Hi. Peaches actually had a reaction to Seth's death to my complete and utter surprise. Of course no one has to read it, but you know, it adds character depth.
And now... oh it's going to be great when she goes back to the palace. AHAHAHAHAHA.
"Hello Loreta."
"SUITS!" The heron yelled in surprise. She had her bat poised to hit whoever was speaking until she realized who was sitting there in the dark.
Peaches. She was sitting on one of the tables, tossing an orange in the air. Apparently she had been waiting for the heron to return.
Loreta shifted to her human form, her fast twisting into one of frustration as she set her bat against the door frame. "How the hell did you get in here?"
"I picked the lock. No lasting damage." The woman said as she continued to toss the orange in the air.
"Why the hell are you here?"
"I ran away again."
"Oh shit, from what?"
"You know, the usual."
"Someone's dead?"
"Yes."
"And... you came to me this time... why?"
The woman caught the orange. She set it down carefully, shifting on the table so she could look at Loreta. "I don't really know."
Loreta rolled her good eye as she made sure the door was locked. No point in being rudely interrupted when her "friend" was being batshit crazy yet again. No wonder the woman had a straight jacket. "Just out with it. Who died, why did you run, and what else is bothering you?"
"Just someone. I wasn't particularly close to him, I guess. He was just a rather nice guy that I watched quite a bit. He had one hell of a relationship with that Bog woman I talk about on occasion. They got married, had a family. They made friends with the Highlander King, made him family. And now that he's gone everything is kind of falling apart." That was a rather incoherent take on the subject, and she knew it.
"Keep going or I'll use the bat."
Peaches snorted. "I'm useless. That's why I ran away. It's not like I can help Bernard or Heilyn out. I can't even deal with my own problems so I decided to disappear as usual."
"But I'm guessing you're here because you want me to guilt trip you into going back." Loreta sighed as she leaned against the door. "Christ woman, you can't run forever and it's not like you can't figure this stuff out yourself."
"Loreta. I don't think I want to go back."
"What?"
"I... it's not the same. Everyone who I find interesting ends up dying. And I'm just watching everything fall to ruin. I can't help anyone. They all hate me. So why should I go back?" Peaches pulled her legs to her chest, propping her chin up on her knees. "He shouldn't have died. And the longer I stay at the court of Hearts, the more I watch people I actually like suffer."
The heron's eyebrows arched as she watched the woman. As long as she had known Peaches she had never honestly seen her like this. Crying incoherently, screaming, hell... biting would make more sense than this. "Becoming a Jack at the Court was a life long dream of yours. And you're there. So why would you quit now? Hate never stopped you before... and what do you mean by like? Shouldn't a stalker like you be removed from the entire situation?"
"Basil's body was missing when I went home a while ago. Someone dug him up."
Loreta froze. What?
"I haven't been back to Torquehelm since, because what's the point? He's not there anymore. Why should I stay in the Court of Hearts if all my dreams have shattered? Why should I watch the few people I like with the few people that I love break because of that damned place?" She let go of her legs, watching them dangle over the table.
The heron made a pained noise before she decided to close the gap between her and the woman. When she had done so she laced her hands through the bright purple hair of the other woman. And then she yanked on it, twisting the woman in such a manner she had no choice but to look. "Get your ass back to the courts. If you care about people then you'll shut your mouth and watch over them like your normal stalker self. Even if you flake out and drop your goddamn title, don't stop watching. If you do, what's the point of living?"
Peaches was silent as she looked at the woman with watery eyes.
"If you continue to give me that look I'll really give you something to cry about."
"Yes ma'am," Peaches said quietly. She mewed when her hair was released."I guess... you're right."
"Damn straight I am. Now get your cowardly ass to the palace."
"I can't even stay the night?"
Loreta pointed to the bloody and stained piece of wood sitting on the door frame.
"Consider me gone!" Peaches said as she hopped off the table. She gave the woman a small smile before unlocking the door and slipping out. She didn't leave right away, leaning against the outside of the building. Shit. She was a horrible person wasn't she? She had just left her children in the palace after the death of their father because she was afraid to face reality.
Death. Why did it always take the best people from the world early?
