omg I LOVED to do that! My dad lives far away, so when driving back to his place in Hamilton (usually into the late evening thanks to big city traffic), I'd unfocus my eyes so that the highway looked like some fantasy magical place with little glowing red and yellow lights speeding by ^____^. I just now read this and.... oh my.... I used to do this too! Mine was always a dog though... large breed and fluffy but I couldn't discern much else about it except it was the ethereal sort of blue XD

D: I totally did that too. ALL THE TIME. Being the geek I am, the thing running/flying beside the car was usually a pokemon. Suicune was a favorite, because of how graceful they are, haha. ^^
Sometimes it would also be random dragons or other characters...like the LotR characters though they usually rode on top of the car...XD
I totally did the squinting at lights thing, too, when my dad drove me home late at night from church youth group. It was especially cool when it was foggy out...lent everything a surreal sort of feel.
Also, I used to push this 'button' on the place near the front passenger seat of the car (where now there would be a passenger airbag, but this was before that). And it wasn't really a button, it was an indented little thing with the car's logo on it. So it said "Taurus" (the car being a Ford Taurus) and I would pretend it said "Tornadoes" and I was firing tornado attacks at the evil cars chasing us. XD;; I was always an overly imaginative child. >>

well, i didn't race awesome pokemons or dragons or anything like that, however if it was night time, and you could see the moon, I imagined that she was making faces at me and I would make faces back and when she dipped behind hills or trees or whatever she came back blushing because she was smooching on her secret lover or something like that

I did this all the time... I still do this on the occasion that I'm a passenger. It's really nice on long rides (like the 3hour train to my dad's XD) where I can just zone out and let my mind unfocus... and that's usually what comes to mind. I started out with the wolves, but eventually it turned into a serpent/eastern dragon/thing. I like to pretend it's flying more now... or, y'know, knocking bikers over and setting things on fire. >3

I don't think I ever imagined someone running beside the car... but in my mind the other cars all had various personalities and would be whispering things I could allllmost make out as they passed by.
At night I also imagined the headlights and taillights were glowing eyes of magical creatures who turned into cars when the light hit them. lol.
