Vergel loved father's stories. It didn't matter if they were fact or fiction or even fiction cleverly disguised as facts -- Vergel could always see them for exactly what they were thanks to his strange ability to see lies. This time, however, the bookchild was struck by the fact that this tale was both fantastical and wonderful and perfect but not a single word uttered of it was false.
Which meant...
GranDaddy was really a doll? Vergel still couldn't believe it even though he knew each word for their truth. He stared at the woman in disbelief (though that would be hard to read in his singular eye). He glanced down at Imre who had begun to doze as well and narrowed his voice so that hopefully only Rosemary could hear. Mommy loved him just the way he was... but that didn't stop him from being aware that he wasn't right. Everyone ran from him, some people couldn't even tell he was a living person... Do you think I can be real someday too?

Kazifel was sleeping rather soundly as she started to fade towards the end of the story. She half curled around her brother, considering she didn't have all the body parts to actually manage this it looked a little awkward.
Rosemary nodded at the question. Her father's story was more than a little unbelievable, but she knew it was truth. After all, there was no other way her dear mother would have had children with an Outsider--or children period.
Her son's second question caught her off guard. Well, she didn't particularly know the answer to that question. He was a book, but she supposed if her father could turn from a person to doll to back again then it might be possible for a book to become a person somehow? He was alive, and he was born.
"I imagine you could, though I don't know if real is the proper term," she whispered so Imre or Kafziel wouldn't stir.
Shashi was hovering in the background. His eyes were narrowed at the ridiculous story. That was impossible, and anyone who believed something like that was utterly ridiculous.

Vergel started thoughtfully at his father, wishing he had the range of motion in his cover to aptly express his feelings. Alas, his unblinking eye would simple stare as it always did. His little wings folded close to his body a mental sigh escaping him.
Real isn't... the right word. I'd just like to be a person. The bookchild very rarely shared the extent of his brooding with his family and even more rarely with Rosemary considering her frequent absences. Even he was aware how unusual his deep thoughts were -- Kafzi didn't struggle with them nearly as much as he did, and he made sure to always be bright and supportive. I just wish I could do things. I can't even protect Kafzi like this and if we went outside one day, I'd just be a burden.
The book fell silent, struggling with his thoughts. He didn't have to be real person, he just had to look real, right?
I'd rather be a doll than a book.
Imre cracked an eye open as she listened to the whispers between Rosemary and Vergel. They were soft, but he heard them. He kept his thoughts (or, more accurately, his concern) tightly to himself. He knew the poor boy had troubles, but Imre loved him just the same.
Sometime soon he would have to take his little angels on an outing, show him one of the local libraries or something. It might cheer him up a little.

A person huh? She could understand that entirely. How the boy had been born a book was a complete and utter loss to her. She wouldn't have believed it if it weren't for the fact tha the hatched out of an egg with Imre's help.
"If my father could become a person again, I'm sure there would be a way that you could become one too." Her tail curled around her. "Never settle for less, you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it. And of course I can try to help."
She hermed for a moment. She still had some of her father's dolls from his workshop. Perhaps she could find one for Vergel? He had done some rather large ones for clients that were never exactly finished. Maybe there was a Torquehelm in there. "I could take you to my dad's workshop at some point if you want to look at some of his dolls."
Shashi scoffed in the background.
Kafziel was sleeping soundly, shifting every so often. It was always so difficult to tell if the girl was sleeping considering her lack of proper eyes.

There was a gear turning slowly in the boy's head. What if he could be a doll instead of a book? Grandfather had been a Person and then a Doll and, in all technicality, if he really was a person despite his... himness... than perhaps he too could become a Doll. It was food for thought, at very least.
Thank you, Daddy. The book would've smiled if he could. Rosemary's words were inspiring. Vergel was a determined child, he always had been, and this just gave him better reason to stick to his convictions. One day he'd be a proper person and he'd be able to care for his dear Kafzi. He laid a wing against her lovingly before Rosemary said something else to draw his attention back.
He could go see the dolls? The boy's eye widened noticeably and his feathers bristled up with surprised pleasure. Yes. He said quickly before remembering to clarify. I want to see GranDaddy's workshop. Please. He'd never wanted anything as much as he wanted that just then.
Imre's eyes narrowed beneath his mask when he heard Shashi scoff. He loved his Rabbit, but he did not approve of him mocking his baby. Pretending to still be asleep, since Rosemary and Vergel wouldn't be able to see the Rabbit anyway, Imre streeeetched himself out and flicked Shashi's ghost with his tail.
Shashi wouldn't feel it or probably even be phased by it but it still amused Imre.

Rosemary grinned. The neighbors would probably have a small heart attack if they saw her talking to a book. Then again she gave them a small heart attack when they were capable of seeing their thoughts on her fur. Generally the knew better than to bother with her. She was a Queen, and she had laid stakes in the house.
"We can go on a little trip, just you and me for once," she grinned. The house wasn't too far away, and she was sure that Imre wouldn't mind completely. Kafziel could stick around to keep him company, and he would probably worry a bit less that way. She was, after all, capable of losing children time and time again. Vergel was at least harder to lose.
Kafziel made a happy squawking sound when her brother brushed up against her with his wings. She was apparently still only half asleep, but she made no move besides cuddling closer to the book.
Shashi watched as the tail went through him. That was always a bit...unnerving? At least the man hadn't actually hit him. Every since that Ace had moved into his head space, there was always the risk of being bitch slapped by the bird hybrid. He hated that thing, whatever it was. He made a disgruntled sound as he slowly sank to the ground.

Vergel was positively beaming, though Rosemary herself wouldn't be able to see the delight that the bookchild was currently experiencing. He wanted so badly to see the Outside! Even Kafzi had seen more of it than he had so far and though he was slightly envious, he would never request she take him out. Not until he could protect her as well. Her happy squawk made him sigh with affectionate pleasure, his wing cupping her slightly.
It would be weird going with Daddy without Kafzi but it would be worth it. Thank you so much, Daddy. I can't wait.
Imre made a strange bird-like purring noise, nuzzling his head closer to Rosemary as he watched Shashi sink to the ground. Silly ghost, was he pouting? For now Imre contented to simply return to his casual dozing. He would console Shashi in the morning after he spoke to Rosemary about these plans for a trip. He didn't mind too much, aside from the creeping paranoia that something bad would happen the moment he lost sight of his little one.

Rosemary patted her son on what she could only assume would be considered his head. If he could manage to get a body it would make simple things so my easier to comprehend. A small surprised sound escaped her as Imre cuddle closer. She leaned to give her lover a kiss on the forehead.
"Night Vergel. Tomorrow's going to be an exciting day and I need a good night's rest." Ultimately she shifted to her animal form and curled up besides Imre.
Shashi proceeded to pout. He hated when everyone had to sleep. It meant that he had to find things to think about until they awoke.
---
It was dawn when Kafziel awoke. Her ears perked to indicated that she was awake, as the rest of her body did its best to act normally when she "stood." She looked a bit disheveled, but everything would eventually right itself.
"Moooooom, Daaaaad!" she announced cheerfully.
Rosemary covered her face with a paw.

Imre had always been a light sleeper and an early riser, so he was already half-awake when Kafzi rose and cheerfully greeted her parents. The large beast stretched out his body and Ace yawned loudly, forcing open the paper mask briefly, before Imre abruptly reached out his large paws and scooped his beloved little girl in a big hug as he rolled onto his back. He snuggled the ghostly little angel.
He would've wished her good morning or well... anything... but his mask kept him silent as he nuzzled the child. Stupid thing. One day he would find a way to be rid of it, if only to shower his children with love. Ace whimpered agreement in the back of his mind.
Vergel 'woke' when his sister did. He didn't really sleep the way normal people did, though he supposed he did dream. Or something close to it. His mind wandered and explored abstract or fanciful ideas. Tonight, however, he couldn't quite shut off his brain. He found his thoughts returning over and over again to the story of his Grandfather.
What if he could really do it to? What if he could find a way to claim a body for himself?
The bookchild 'woke' to a sudden and very intense need for books. He didn't know nearly enough about dolls. Morning, Kafzi. He greeted softly, eye rolling over to focus on his parents. Could he get Rosemary to stop by a library or bookstore on the way? The prospect of everything was terribly exciting.

Kafzi giggled when her mother scooped her up. She always enjoyed his morning greetings, he was the best! She would have given her father a happy lick if she was capable of such a thing. Not having a lower jaw did make things a pain sometimes. "Heeee! Morning Vergel!" she said with a happy chirp.
Rosemary woke up when Imre hit the floor. She jerked awake, her eyes wide open as she watched the entire scene upside down. Dawn. She never liked it very much. She preferred to sleep in late and stay up late, but hey when in Rome. "Morning!" she said after a moment, streching when she finally made to stand. "I'm going to make some pancakes, and I'll make Kafzi some eggs."
She cracked her neck and shifted to her bipedal form. After she ate she was going to bring up the idea of going on a trip with Vergel. That way she would be a little more cheerful and able to convince the bird if he protested.
Shashi watched silently. Family. He didn't get it, and he never would.
