His voice was even different, Mrs. White noted. He sounded...stronger? Her wussy 'boyfriend' was confident now? Something really bad must have happened, then! She blinked, so surprised by his change in demeanor that she didn't even have time to react to the hug before he was pulling back, purple eyes wide and concerned--uh, one purple and one green. By the Dark! It was like he was a different Card, even.
And then he said...her ears went back as she fought to keep her frustration in check. It was like he was taunting her with all this information! She stared at him, pink eyes wide, as she fought to not attack him and -make- him tell her. Her pain ability danced tantalizingly at the edges of her mind, but...
"Menefer," she whispered, making her expression pleading. A few tears sprung to her eyes on command, and she went to brush her paw over his face, stroking his new mane and the little soul patch he had now. "Please, tell me what happened to you? I...I can't go on not knowing...I'm worried, now...Why can't we go to the Capital?" If pleading didn't work, she'd have to try something else. Perhaps a little force would be needed, then.
She had to know what happened.

He stood their slightly confused, he didn't really know if he should tell her about what had happened the things that he had to go through the things that he would have rather had things buried deeply in his memories to a point where he couldn't remember it save for his deepest nightmares. He gave a slight shudder and knew that talking in the doorway wouldn't be the best of places. He gazed about the massive mansion and saw that it did have a garden and directed her towards it so that they would be out of ear shot from anyone that may be away, and out of sight.
As they entered the garden he saw a wooden bench that seemed to never had been used before. It was rather sad to him, such a beautiful place not even being used. He took a seat and waited for her to sit next to him. He gazed at her for a longer moment and then started talking.
"I can't tell you everything... but I can tell you what had happened that you'll soon learn anyways." he said as he looked at the small pond that had multiple waterfalls. "There was a war that broke out in the Capital, between the Lowlanders and another realm had brought their war here." he said as he gazed away a bit a tear falling down the side of his face. "I fought with the leader of the Lowlanders commander that was attempting to protect a portal that they were sending Lowlander children through to save them from the others, I attacked him, fearing for my charges who where in the crossfire... and... well... I'm just going to skip that part." he said as he gave a sob remembering what had happened to those children, "I wounded the man named Cale... damaged him enough where he could have been killed by the opposing forces, I damaged his right fighting hand, his back and even his mobility, and I... I'm... I am the cause of his death." he said as his shoulders sunk and he started to weep... he knew he kept a lot out, but he just wasn't ready to open up like that.

At the look on his face, her darker self roared to cause him pain, and then the hesitation would be wiped off his face...no longer would he think of her as some delicate glass flower! The fact that she, herself, had fostered this false image was of no consequence in light of her insatiable -need- to know the true story. Just as she was about to activate her pain ability on the man, he began to walk off.
Was he walking away from her? NOW? Oh, she'd kill him! But, as it turned out, he was just leading her to a more private place. A small garden that Scrooge all but ignored to the side of the mansion. Forcing herself calm through an effort of will, Mrs. White followed, her expression a bit neutral. She sat beside him on the wooden bench, tucking her tail over her paws so he wouldn't see it if her claws came out, and turned her full attention toward him, expression pleading and hungry.
Finally...he started to talk, and she listened. A war? In the Capital? She'd missed a bloody -war-? The papers had merely said there had been 'an isolated incident of violence' and not gone into any of the gory details, which she found most disappointing. At least now she knew more...and that it had been Lowlanders and Josiggies fighting. Menefer was still leaving things out, but at least he'd given her something.
She tried to cool her impatience and, much as she loathed his weakness on the matter, went to nuzzle his face. "Shh, shh, it's okay, dear. You were only doing what you thought was right. I'm sure the man wouldn't blame you." After all, Cards expected to die in war. But the fact that Menefer had killed...potentially for the first time...it was intriguing. No wonder he was so changed...perhaps he could be more useful yet.

He looked to her doubtfully and turned his head away, he wondered if she would ever understand what it meant to be a killer, or someone that had been the cause of. Not to mention having two children blowing up in his face wasn't good for him either, those where just things that he didn't think that she would understand. She was just to delicate unlike what he really didn't know her to be. She may have been more impressed if he told her all the gory details from start to finish and was enthusiastic about it, but he didn't know her like that.
He leaned back on the bench and starred at the small pond some that was over grown from lack of work, though it was good that the water pumps still worked and it gave a nice tranquil sound. He gazed back at her and wondered if he had said too much though she didn't seem at all shaken about a war happening naught but a few leagues away. He was slightly baffled on this and wondered what he was going to do. Should he just leave or pretend that nothing ever happened. He really didn't know but the reaction that she gave wasn't something that he had expected either.
When she ran her face against his did he sit there in a bit of shock, "I thought... that this would upset you. Do you wish for me to just leave?" he asked as he gazed at her, his feelers placed back against his skull lining themselves with his antlers that came from the first child that blew up.

Mrs. White drew back quickly, as if stung, eyes impossibly wide, while inwardly she cursed her impatience. Had she not acted correctly in her fervor? Just forget it. Show him who you truly are! Show him ME! Mrs. White shook her head, ears going back and eyes filling up with tears. She gave Menefer a sad look, and pawed at him, his face and his neck and his chest, as if she couldn't feel him enough. She shook her head, too, and forced her ears back, completing the sad look.
"No, no, Menefer, dear, please! Don't leave! I...why, I'd hate to think of you out there all alone, dealing with such...such guilt over these d-deaths!" Her lip trembled. He'd better buy this. "I-it DOES upset me, but I'm more worried about you! Fighting in a war...you could have been k-killed! Just like my p-poor husband!" She dissolved into tears, clinging to him pathetically.

He guess that he was wrong, something like one of those delayed reactions that he had seen in drunk people when they had too much to drink. He gave a sigh and when she started to weep and sob on him did he wrap his paws about her, luckily for him this time he didn't smell like food, but something else entirety, like too much soap with a small scent of iron. He hugged her close and wondered too if her husband had died in a war as well, or in some rather bad fight.
"Ok... I'll stay with you, no matter what..." he said as he pulled her away a bit "Apparently I'm hard to kill even when it was a human with a sword." he said with a bit of a smile, though which faded when he remembered that sword and how that man had used it to decapitate a child... "I'm sorry... I shouldn't have brought this up." he said a bit soft spoken, not his loud and happy self much any more. He just seemed to be completely depressed and not really knowing what to do.
Now he was more vulnerable than ever before, and he bought every word that she had said.

He hugged her. He hugged her and reassured her and she knew she had him. Oh, she'd get the full story in time, she knew she would. Whether she slowly cajoled it out of him with tender reassurances or forced it out of him with a sadistic grin...she -would- get everything. But for now...for now, he'd given her somewhere to start, and something to think about.
She let herself sob for a bit longer, face buried in his fur while part of her reveled in the fact that there was an underlying smell of something much like blood under the boring, flowery scent. She let her sobs increase as he said the words 'kill' and 'sword', as if being reminded how closer Menefer had come to death. But really, Mrs. White was fascinated to hear even more details. She wanted every last one, and she wished she could just break her false image now, here, in the garden.
But patience had always been something she'd had, and it was what kept her several steps ahead of everyone she was fooling. Including Menefer. She pulled back finally, sniffling a bit for added effect, and blinked watery pink eyes at him. "N-no, dear, it's fine. I...I want you to be able to talk to me about things that are bothering you..." She sniffled again and dragged a black-tipped paw across her nose. "I'm sorry...I'm afraid I'm a bit of a mess...please, let's go somewhere nice and...and forget all this?" She was impressed by her own acting.

"Thanks Nel." he said as he hugged her once more, he couldn't help but feel more attracted to her when she took such an innocent pose with her paw upon her nose and all. Though what attracted him most was her eyes. He had been thinking about them for quite some time and now he knew that something was different about them. He looked at them and noted that this time they where pink, the previous time they had met they were violate, and the time before then they were a blue. He wondered about this and guessed that since it was ok to talk to her about this stuff then it wouldn't be bad of an idea to talk about.
As she lead him to some nicer place he followed her and finally gotten the guts to ask, "Do your eyes change color?" he asked as he glanced at her, a quizzical eyebrow raised. He knew that she may or may not ask him, and may just try to get the same information out of him again, but he was alright now, he had told someone, but he hadn't told her yet on what he really wanted to do. It would be kinda looked down upon by many other regions... and his deepest secret he didn't think he could ever tell her.

His reaction would indicate that Menefer had fallen for her act hook, line, and sinker, and Mrs. White knew she could breathe a little easier. She pushed down the part of her that burned to know more, controlling the curiosity and putting it in a neat little box for when she thought it would be safe to ask more about it. For now...she smiled shyly at him, and then gracefully hopped down from the bench to lead the other Feline away from the mansion.
So the Capital was out? That was fine. She knew a place right here in the Highlands where they could go and grab a bite to eat. She began to lead him there. When he asked the question, she paused, one black-tipped paw poised in the air, fluffy tail swishing. So he finally noticed that, did he? She turned to give him an apologetic look. "Yes, Menefer. It's because I'm a Tulgey, you know...but they only ever change to one thing. They're pink during the day, and yellow at night." Her eyes got a bit distant for a moment, thinking. "It's been that way for as long as I can remember. I hope it doesn't...bother you?" She shot him a worried look while being inwardly amused.
Notes: How odd...when the sun goes down her eyes change to an odd, yellowish color.

He gave what she had said some thought. Truly he didn't know that much about the Tulgey region, even though they were so close it was odd. He knew more about what grew where and recipes that they enjoyed than the actual culture and manners that they had in the realm itself. So he shrugged it off as a Tulgey thing and left it at that. Since they were having some small chat he guessed it wasn't a bad time to start some of his own.
"No not at all, I think that its perfectly fine." he said as he then gave a small smile eyes half close in a almost bashful way, "I'm the odd one now, look I have glass antlers that grow backwards, white fluffy feelers coming out of my skull and one eye that is green. So I have to say... no it doesn't bother me at all." he said with a bit of a laugh as he caught back up with her walking closer to her than usual. He wondered silently to himself if she had yet to notice that he was a ten yet? Would that matter to her? Well... one day he just hopped that she... well thats a different story.
For now he just enjoyed being with her and no where else.
