Jak had walked by the store so many times. He'd even pressed himself against the glass at the front window once or twice, before someone came by to shoo him along or he peeled himself off on his own to scamper away. There was just always such cool stuff in there. He couldn't help but look. He'd never actually gone inside, though, not before today. He wore one of his 'reguar' bodies, the bipedal purple-marked Corvie ferret that had served him so well in the past. His frame was lean and wiry, still gangly because of its sixteen-year-old stature. For a bit of flair, he even let his angler-dangler hand down in front of his face. It gave him more Corvie 'authenticity'. He could say he was mechanical and no one, absolutely no one, questioned him. On his chest, a red Seven of Hearts sat proudly. He liked being a Heart when he was out. Sometimes, people assumed it meant he could handle pain. He could. Just not like they expected. It gave him a little shiver of excitement just thinking about it. The Corvie horse who tended the store was occupied with another customer when he walked in, and so he was free to peruse at his leisure without being bothered. He liked that. With a slightly rolling gait, looking odd but not bizarre on a normal biped body, he walked up to a display counter and stared at stuff. His red eyes drank in the oddities on display. So. Cool. Man, did he wish he had money.

[Note: this is before Kaden gets his pretty white wings. <3] Kaden had been in and out of this shop so many times in the past and had never once been able to afford anything. Like everything else Kaden did, he wanted to get it himself. He'd managed to 'earn' up the tokens for Quicksand, who was to say he couldn't finally get something he wanted out of this place... Well, he could definitely afford it with a five-finger discount... but wings didn't make stunts like that very easy. He couldn't wait until he was older and capable of getting himself a form with more dexterous hands... Until then, the teenager found himself wandering around the shoppe yet again and peering at the various awesomeness of the displays with Quicksand at his heels. He eventually found himself at the display counter, staring at the truly nifty items that were out of his reach (and price range) until a particularly glowy something managed to drag his eye away. When he turned around, he did not expect to find himself staring at a boy of about the same age as himself with a very nifty dangly thing on his head. "I like your glowy doo-dad." Kaden had never been one to be anything but blunt... unless not being blunt was useful in the situation. Which is was not for the time being.

Jak looked up from lusting over a collection of shiny teeth in a jar at the sound of a voice right near his head. It took him only a second to figure out that the other boy was talking to him and staring at his angler-dangler. Once he did, he grinned proudly and flicked it with a finger. "Geeeee, thanks! I like the little fluffy doo-dads on your head."
Were those things natural? They looked it. He could totally duplicate them. Maybe he should sometime? That would be pretty fun. What would they feel like if you tugged on them? It would probably hurt. Amhal might like to play with them like the kitty he was. He certainly liked pawing at the glowing feeler sometimes.
The faux-ferret turned his head back to the glass and sighed wistfully. Stuff! Expensive stuff. "So much cool crap in there. I want it all. Especially the weird little collections of stuff. You here to buy somethin'?"

Kaden immediately puffed up his feathers for the compliment, displaying his wild little 'crest' proudly. He sure liked his feathers as well, and he really hoped they'd look as awesome as his dad's did. "Thanks! I was born with mine, but did you make yours? You're really good if you did!" Kaden had always admired his dad's mechanics, but he didn't have the same knack for it. Feathers for hands also didn't help much. He was able to use his talons pretty much like hands when he needed to, but they weren't all too dexterous with stuff like screwdrivers and wires.
Quicksand glanced up at the two chattering teenagers for a moment, staring blankly before sneezing a greeting and ignoring them again.
When the ferret's attention returned to the case, Kaden's followed and the mutt bird's feathers puffed up once more. So he was poor and oogling as well? It wasn't fair. The bird shared a wistful sigh with the fascinating stranger and bobbed his head. "Tell me about it! It's so expensive though." Dad could probably buy him something, but Kaden preferred to be more independent than that. "I want to buy stuff, but I don't have enough on me." He wanted that old dead spider! It looked so cool, and he bet he could find all sorts of uses for it.

"Mine's a long story," Jak said with a grin, displaying a lot of ferret needle-teeth. "It's totally a result of my actions, though. Pretty handy at night in the dark, lemme tell you." Between the dangler and his flaming eyeball, they didn't need to waste their precious few candles on little things. Finding them in the trash with wicks intact was hard enough. Wasting them on fiddly little shit always made him groan.
The sneeze startled him into looking down, further than the young bird, and he caught sight of a beige-ish bandery creature. He stared for a moment in surprise. There weren't many of the creatures roaming the Outer Bazaar, though of course there were glimpses. They were usually half-feral, though, and really nasty little cusses. Nobody ever wanted to get near one of them.
He looked back up at the wistful sigh and his eyes were once again caught by the glimmer of untouchable, desirable objects. "Yeah, same," he agreed with a small grimace. "Really, I want a lot of the stuff here. You can't exactly buy half of it, though. At least, uh. I think you can't. Never asked. I figure it might get me tossed our or something."

Kaden was delighted by the glowy dangly thing. It was just awesome. In fact, he wouldn't have minded at all if he had one for himself. The bird tilted his head, almost as if trying to investigate the potential of having his own glowing antennae. It would help with that seeing in the dark bit.
And then they were focused on the awesome shinies again. A whole case full of wonderfully awesome trinkets just waiting to be bought. Or snatched. His gaze shifted from the display to Cauter to the ferret beside him. No snatching. Not right now, at very least. "Yeah, I think you're right. I've never asked about the other stuff either..." Though he did already have a good idea about the stuff that was already for sale. Like the Lowlander leg his mom had come away with... Not fun... but there were no legs here now so he didn't think about it much "Do you have anything in particular that you're pining for?"

Jak's long neck twisted this way and that as he tried to get a better look at the stuff behind the glass. "Yeeeeeah. I guess so. Those teeth look wicked. The spider's cool too. Can you imagine playing with stuff that has creepy warnings pasted all over it?" That was practically his pastime, trying to find weird crap to eat or fiddle with. Look what it had already done for him! Balance! Seeing in the dark! A floating, flaming eyeball! All of those things would b counted as improvements, especially since he could get around them with his nifty little ability whenever he needed to.
"Can't stare at it for too long, though, or I think the shopkeep's gonna try and shoo me out. How about you?" He turned briefly to give the Corvie horse a grin, the expression creepy when paired with the expression in his red eyes. Yeah... he should probably think about edging out. He took one cautious step back, eyes flicking to the other boy again.

Oh man, Kaden couldn't help but agree.
What was more awesome than playing with things you weren't supposed to? Let alone creepy things with mutant stuff and curses! The muttbird's feathers fluffed up with excitement as he stared longingly at the stuff on the shelves. "Yeah! I was lookin' at that Spider, real neat the way it preserves itself 'n' all... Wonder what it'd do..." Kaden eyed it a bit longer, longing for the weird little thing behind the display case.
Then Jak's attention shifted back to the shopkeeper, reminding Kaden of all the times he'd been booted out of stores for loitering and staring at their stuff too much. "Ahhh, haha... Yeah, you're right." He flashed a troublesome smirk toward the shop-keep only to receive a a furitive brow raise. Yeah, slipping out was probably the best bet. "I'm up for slipping out of here for now..." Kaden's grin quickly returned, plotting. "Maybe we'll just have to come back another time..." Hmm, maybe even with some money to actually buy the stuff.

"Probably somethin' cool..." Jak muttered under his breath, turning his lustful stare towards the deceased arachnid and fantasizing about all sorts of bizarre things happening to him were he to eat the magical bug. Wouldn't that be fantastic? Maybe he'd grow even more limbs! Or make a web! Or get extra floating eyes in different fiery colors! Or-!
His red eyes turned back to the bird and he laughed a little, sounding as though he had a dry, raspy throat. "Yeah. That would be fun. Maybe we should do that. Hopefully at the same time. I'll keep my eye out for you, nameless feather-head. Trust me when I say that I'll see you first. And then we can... plan. Or do. Or something."
Maybe he'd have stolen enough money by that time to buy something? But he was saving for a house for him and Amhal. Hmm. It would be a tough call, chewing on old teeth or eating a long-dead bug or buying someplace to live. His brother would help him make the decision, he was sure.
((Aaaand fast forward. xD))

It had taken a great deal of cajoling to get anyone at all to pay up for the awesome spider he wanted and, in the end, Mother had been enitrely out of the question. Mum was awesome and all but considerably less interested in him eating bugs. Dad was just curious about a potential experiment, and much easier to manipulate without Mum in the room to make things hard. Score. At last he was back again, Hatter in tow with a heavily bemused smile playing on his features, and he was eager to purchase his spider -- and find his friend with the awesome angler-dangler. Not that he even knew the other boy's name, just that they were of a simailar age and that the other Corvie had awesome mechanical doo-dads and Kaden wanted some of his own. In fact, he'd spent the last half-hour of their walk rambling about just that. Hatter was counting his blessings when he arrived at the door, somewhat hoping gettig there would silence the boy... wrong. "Wait!" Kaden chirp-squaked and Quicksand made a disgruntled noise as he plowed into Kaden's leg. "My friend with his angler-dangler, I wanted to see if we'd meet up again... 'cept I'm not supposed to look for him, cause he'll see me first... y'know?"Hatter paused, something in the statement struck him as a bit odd. "He'll see you first, hm?" Very odd... Kaden had a good eye too... The Joker shrugged his shoulders easily and flashed his son a grin. "Guess we can just linger a bit and see if he turns up then." After all of Kaden's ramblings, Hatter was rather looking forward to meeting this kid.
