Well, sorry this is a bit slow?
Anyway, my challenge thread or whatever. XD
Title: New Haircut?
Author: Lucca
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Aberforth, Iaso Price
Warnings: None?
Word Count: 631
Summary: In Kari's words: Aberforth wakes up and finds out that he's suddenly a girl. How does he react? And does he still find the nickname Abby inappropriate?
Notes: I hope I didn't get Iso too much out of character! >_< I apologize in advance, Callypso, lol!
Aberforth had never made a huge deal about gender. He was what he was, and he had no desire to change that, but it was more habit than anything else. Like the fact he had no desire to trim his beard or change his brand of toothpaste. He was used to being male. But really, it wasn’t something he ever consciously thought about. If he had, he would have pointed out how both genders of Cards could father or bear children, both could hold whatever Title they liked at Court, both could learn the same sorts of magic. Without a whole lot of gender discrimination in their world (unless you counted the Yarrow Gardens) it wasn’t something that made a lot of difference to someone like Aberforth. He wouldn’t have called either gender ‘attractive’ as he was really quite asexual. After all, when you’re paranoid enough to not ever sign for packages and to suspiciously check every drink you were given in public for evidence of being drugged, you weren’t the type of person to let someone close enough to do so much as even hold your hoof, let alone anything more intimate.
So it was that when Aberforth woke up one morning to find himself suddenly female, she just rolled her eyes and stared clinically at the mirror to assess the changes. Besides the obvious, her horns were shorter and straighter, and her beard was much smaller, though not gone entirely. Some of her bulk had slimmed down, though being in only Animal form meant no true curves would show up. The only thing Aberforth was really worried about was that this meant just one more motive others would have to lie to her and try to get something out of her. Well, that and the fact that she was expecting a visit from—
An impatient, familiar knock sounded on the door, and Aberforth’s ears drew back. With a mental sigh, she echoed her way over to the door and began working silently on all the locks (after checking through the peephole she’d had installed, just in case), ignoring an impatient repetition of her name. She opened the door and nodded to the very-pregnant Ferret standing outside of it.
Iaso Price blinked at Aberforth, confusion in her eyes. She was silent a long moment before she said, “New haircut?”
If Aberforth had been the type to laugh at anything, that might have gotten a snort. Instead, she just shook her head. “Something like that,” she mumbled, and a brief frown crossed her muzzle as she heard how different her voice sounded...higher and slightly lilting. Iso blinked rapidly several times, and Aberforth silently stood aside, letting the Ferret enter the apartment. She did so without ever taking her eyes from the Goat, shock, confusion, and curiosity in her eyes.
“A most interesting development,” the doctor said in a clipped tone, turning to look at Aberforth again. “Do you know how it occurred?” The Goat shook her head, already weary of the subject. Catching onto this, Dr. Price got right down to business instead, and Aberforth felt a small measure of relief. “Though, I must say...the name ‘Aberforth’ seems hardly apropos now. What would you prefer to be called?” The Goat shrugged, swirling the coffee around in her mug with a spoon held carefully in her hoof. Price pursed her lips thoughtfully. “There’s always Abby,” she suggested, and Aberforth suppressed a shudder. Abby. By the Dark, she’d been called that before as a male, and she liked it no better now.
Aberforth (not Abby, thanks) shook her head, and resolved to get her name changed as soon as possible.
