Eulalie gnawed ferociously at the thick fabric of the leash. Her little canine teeth had almost gotten through and then she would be free, free to run! Not that she didn’t love her mama but none of the other girls had to be on a leash, even though this one just kind of looped around her belly and not her neck and was sort of not terrible feeling except that she was restrained and she didn’t like it. All because she had gotten distracted and— OH! BUTTERFLY!--she charged after it but the leash yanked her baaaaack— --had accidentally walked in front of a carriage or three and also some horses but the point was it wasn’t Eulalie’s fault, they were just so pretty and all those people weren’t paying enough attention to her— AH HA! She was free of the leash. Just in time to see-- Oh oh ooooohhhhhh.

Coralie loved her daddy, even though he didn’t wear the bracelet she made for him—pretty, pale blue beads that really complimented his eyes; why wouldn’t he wear it?—and sometimes he fell asleep when she was talking to him—which was rather upsetting, because Yolanda and Fabio had feelings too, and didn’t he want to know how they were doing?—but besides that, she loved him. Loved him like strawberry cake—oooh, strawberry cake, maybe she could talk daddy into getting some-- She glanced at daddy, who was busy talking to a clerk—mama hadn’t liked the kind of yogurt he’d brought home—Coralie wrinkled her nose; she didn’t like any kind of yogurt--and now daddy was on a quest for the right kind of yogurt—and slipped away on her own quest for strawberry cake. All thoughts of strawberries and cake evaporated, though, when she saw that swash of pink enter her field of vision. Ooohh.

Eulalie locked eyes with the girl. She was so blue, like bubbles, like the bubbles Grandma Mnem said her brain was made of but Grandma Mnem was meeeeean and besides she would like to have a head really full of bubbles, because then they would leak out her ears and float away and she could chase them, and she could do that for hours, maybe forever. And she was so fluffy that she could die, just die, and there was something else too, something that Eulalie knew and that knew Eulalie in return.
They had a secret something! Who else in the whole world would ever have a secret something like that, this connection, this pure pure joy like rainbows exploding everywhere?
She pitched forward mindlessly, knowing only that this girl was now more important than anything ever and that it was completely imperative to be with her forever and they needed to hug, desperately.

Coralie gazed at her future—it was pink, like the color cake turned when it soaked up sweet delicious strawberries, and gold like warm happy sunshine—and rushed forward to embrace it. Never before had she felt such belonging—Yolanda and Fabio, her dear treasured dolls, became irrelevant in light of the deep level of connection that had presented itself so wondrously. They had a thing.
She latched onto the girl, babbling exuberant nothings in her excitement. The had a thing, and it was just theirs, and where had she been these four, long, bleak years of existence!? Coralie didn’t know how she’d made it this long without embracing her sweet companion.
“’s you!--oh my gosh--waited so looong,” Coralie cried, nuzzling her sweet, most dear, dearest friend. She was so pink, and it was amazing, and Coralie decided her new favorite color always was pink. Pink like her dearest, bestest friend.

Eulalie threw her arms around her new best friend and snuggled her like nothing had ever been snuggled before, gleefully and warmly and ever so wonderfully, and it was sweeter than candies and better even than chasing bubbles forever. She had never realized how meaningless these four years of her life had been, how dark and dire and bubbleless, but now everything was going to be sunshine forever, she could just feel it. There was sunshine and the skies were blue and this girl was blue and it was just meant to be, that proved it.
“Me toooooo,” she wailed happily, rocking back and forth with this wave of deliriously joyful emotion. Oh she was so very soft, just like a best friend should be! “Oooooh my gosh oh my gosh, be with me always, okay? Always and forever and more!”
Nothing would ever separate them! Not Queens, not monsters, not even mamas could ever break their bond!

Coralie practically vibrated apart with the force of her excitement, “Forever and always, and always and forever! Oh my gosh.” She nuzzled closer, enjoying the feel of her friend in her arms which had just moments before been so bitterly empty. She was so pink, and she had a horn, kind of like a unicorn but better because it was her best friend instead of a unicorn, which Kaz said didn’t exist anyway, and Coralie loved her—maybe even more than daddy. And Coralie loved her daddy a lot, but it was like the palest crayon compared to her affection for her new friend. Or maybe it was the same, but different: daddy-love compared to friend-love, which were different but let her love them lots both the same. But different.
They would be the best friends ever and have adventures and have matching bracelets and sneak strawberry cake and go for long walks and-and—
Coralie shrieked with renewed delight, and snuggled closer.
