Teo had been about to ask her who Sid was, but the thought flew from his head entirely when he whacked his wing. Now his thoughts were on the vicious attack and the nature of his enemy.
Its nature was... wooden.
Hard.
Dangerous.
Suddenly intent, he craned his head sloooowly all around, eyeing the wood that traveled up the side of the wall and above him with the window. "I'm fine," he muttered absently. "But we aren't safe. I think... this wood used to be a pirate leg. And the pirate's still making it do things. There are pirates on this island too!"
The addition of the bat's knowledge had suddenly made this game a lot more fun! And a lot more dangerous. Risky. Heroic! If they could defeat the evil pirates with the magical animated wooden legs then they would be heroes to the whole palace kingdom! Dad would love that. Maybe he'd even get thanked by the Queen herself!

Mirriam tilted her head curiously, wondering what Teo was looking at! She glanced around, turning slowly on her upside-down perch, but she couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. Her ears twitched as the bird began to speak, and her eyes widened. Oh! "Oh wow! Are there really? You better make sure if you have any money it's well hidden, then, or the pirates are gonna try and steal it. They like gold and money and shiny jewels," she explained seriously. With that thought, she clamped a wing claw over the little blue flower charm she always wore behind her ear. Though that made her thoughtful, and she glanced around the room to see...ah!
"We could give the pirate a taste of his own medicine and attack his wood with a plant!" Mirriam spread her wings toward the potted plant sitting in the corner, looking harmless and vegetative. But as she focused on it, it twitched its leaves, and seemed to move a bit in its pot, as if eager to jump out and do her bidding. Of course, she wasn't entirely sure what the plant could do to the wood. It didn't have any thorns or heavy branches. "Maybe it can stop the connection the wood has to the pirate, since it's made of wood too and it can talk to it...of course, he'll notice that his wood stopped working and will immediately come to attack us, so we gotta be ready!"
Without waiting for Teo's opinion of this plan, the Bat narrowed brown eyes to stare at the plant, and the ficus tree literally uprooted itself and shambled over to the window towards the two children, leaves shaking as if in a slight breeze.
Flower Ability: Once a week she is able to cause vegetation around her in a ten foot radius to uproot itself and shamble about for a full 5 minutes. This array of plants can carry up to 50lbs, tangle up limbs, or surprise someone by latching onto their face from above, though it will not kill. The vegetation becomes normal again after 5 minutes and is rendered harmless. It is easily destroyed, but can be quite the nuisance while around.

Teo stared at the bat for a minute, confused. Money? He didn't have any money. If there was money, Dad had it. "Oh no! Dad has money! The pirates might get Dad!" And that was not acceptable!
He watched her distractedly push her wings towards one corner of an alcove, staring in that direction and not seeing anything. Until the leaves on one of the plants twitched. That certainly got his attention! And then it stood up! And moved towards them! He let out a cawing cheer.
"Yeah! Go magic plant! Turn the window not-evil! The pirate doesn't scare me. Without his leg, all he's got is a boat, right? And sharks can still bite through boats! This is still shark-infested water, too. See, they're circling? They're waiting for foooooood." He fluttered his wings while he said that, and then ducked down in the window frame so the plant could get at the wood to talk. On second thought, he stared hard at the ground and hopped down onto one of the safe tile islands. The sharks were dangerously close and snapping, but he could hold them at bay until the pirates showed up on the island.

Mirriam gasped, wings going to her mouth in mute shock. "Yeah! Yeah, they might get your Dad! We gotta protect him!" Dad... her brown eyes turned in some sad emotion for a minute, but it was quickly gone--replaced with concentration as she used her ability.
She grinned, resting back on the curtain rod and tucking her wings around herself as the plant made its shifting way over to them and began to slap the window sill with its leaves, weaving its branches around the window and swaying as if trying to lift the frame right out of the wall. Mirriam grinned, glad that Teo appreciated her ability. "I think it's working!" she cheered, taking to the air again in her excitement.
"If the pirate shows up real soon, my plant can hold him upside down while we attack! It can stay alive for five minutes!" Mirriam explained. "I'll keep a look out for his ship." With a flutter of wings, she got higher up into the room, brown eyes wide an alert for when the pirate ship would come sailing across the sea and towards their hide out. "Do you know what his ship looks like?"

Teo completely missed any sadness associated with the word 'Dad' in his excitement, hopping from one foot to the other on his 'safety' to avoid any intrepid sharks. They were all hungry! At least Mirriam could cling to safety. That was good. He didn't have to worry about needing to save her. That way, if he got in trouble, she and her magic plant could save him!
"Yeah plant! Get it! The plant's a monster hero!" Because moving plants were probably monsters, but that was okay as long as the monsters were on your side.
He hadn't even thought to keep watch for the pirate. The battle between plant and evil enchanted window-leg was just too intense! His head jerked this way and that, one wing raising to scan the seas for any sign of approaching danger. "Ummm, I dunno. Maybe he painted it blue to match the water and that's why we can't see it? Oh! Maybe it's blue to keep the sharks away! Watch for something blue!"

Mirriam nodded without glancing down at Teo, brown eyes narrowed quite intently out to 'sea'. "Blue ship, got it! As soon as I see it, I'll tell ya, Captain Teo!" Why was he a Captain? Because it sounded cool, and besides, he was the one with the secret island base. She was just here to help out and use her abilities to turn the window back to their side. "Just be careful down there...the sharks are getting wilder!" She glanced down and gasped, as if seeing something alarming. "That shark has even more pointy teeth than all the other ones! Maybe it's the shark Queen and if we can defeat him all the sharks will run away from us and accept us as their rightful leaders!"
Mirriam pointed excitedly behind Teo, and started to flutter down to conspire about what to do about this new development, when there was a resounding -CRACK!- and she nearly fell out of the air in surprise. She turned to stare in wonder at the window, which now had a rather large crack in the wood running all the way down. Apparently her magic tree was a bit more powerful than she'd realized? "Oh, uh, wow, I think the evil wood is now perfectly subdued!" she said, waving her wings at the tree until it rustled back from the window and 'stood' there on its roots, branches swaying. Hopefully she wasn't going to get in -too- much trouble when Mr. Birdy Man saw what happened to that window. But then...she could just explain it was evil and had used to be a pirate's leg, and he would understand!

When the window cracked beneath the onslaught of their pet monster plant hero, Teo cheered! His wings waved excitedly along with his hopping legs, resulting in a very odd and amusing scene for their nonexistent onlookers. The window would have certainly been less amusing. Good thing the onlookers were nonexistent.
"Shark Queen! Shark Queen! Then we're the shark Queens! And they can fight the pirates!" That sounded like a perfectly wonderful idea to the young boy! He could see the shark Queen quite clearly, marked with a giant 'Q' on his chest just like all proper Queens. He stopped his dance for a few seconds, hunkered down, and sprung for the big, bad, special shark!
They wrestled. Underwater. It was awesome! He would show that shark! What had his new friend called him? Captain Teo? Captains had to be able to go underwater at least some of the time. He'd been promoted! That was like getting another rank, like his Daddy said he did when he was just hatched!

Teo's enthusiasm completely obliterated any guilt the little Bat might have been inclined to feel about the window. After all, she'd done much worse things by accident in the past by playing around! Like that time she'd tried to perform an exorcism on that haunted vase, and ended up breaking it by accident. Strangely enough, everyone was much more worried about the fact the vase was broken beyond repair than the fact that whatever had been haunting the vase had been set free to terrorize someone else!
Adults had weird priorities, Mirriam was constantly learning.
"Yeah, yeah exactly! Go get 'em, Captain Teo!" Mirriam cheered the little bird on while he had a valiant fight with the shark Queen. She would have helped, but her wings made her just about useless underwater. Besides, this was his fight! He needed to show the sharks who was boss, so that his island would be left in peace! So for now, she was content to just be his moral support.

Mirriam's support lent Teo the courage and fortitude he needed in his wrestling match with the shark Queen. Who knew a Queen battle would be so tough? He rolled, squawked, clawed, bit, grappled, rended, clung, and screeched! Finally, after what seemed like forever, he crawled back onto his island with an exhausted but triumphant wave at his companion.
"Done! 's done! We're the shark Queens! Now - sharks - find the pirates! We'll help! The boat's hiding from us. All! 's blue."
No longer in fear of shark attacks, he hopped with confidence from island to island, raising his wings up to "peer dramatically" off into the distance in search of the pirate ship. It was hiding really well! "Can you see it from there?" he asked the bat urgently, glancing up at her mid-peer. She was higher up. The sharks were lower down. He was right in the middle. They just had to find it!

Mirriam gasped and squealed and cheered as Teo fought the vicious battle not only for leadership over the sharks, but for his very life! After all, sharks were really dangerous, and the Queen shark was even more dangerous with all those teeth! And when he finally crawled back up after having won the bloody battle, Mirriam gave an ear-piercing victory whoop and looped around in the air excitedly. "Yessss, you did it! Good job Captain! You're an inspiration to the crew! That would be me, of course." She giggled and looped again in the air before fluttering back up to the curtain rod and perching upside down there.
Now that the sharks were on their side, the pirate would be forced to surrender, she was sure! The little Bat squinted earnestly into the distance, even bringing up a wing to shield her eyes from the (non-existent) sun shining over the water. "If only we had a spyglass!" she said to herself, thinking of the useful thing she'd seen all the pirate carrying in her book. But then...her brown eyes widened.
"Oh, oh, I think I see it Teo! Look, look!" She pointed excitedly with her wing claw.
