So very proud of himself, Teo puffed up further at her praise, his sparse feathering looking hilariously colorful as it went every which way. He continued his search, and eventually focused his attention on the direction she indicated with her wing. The right direction. She could see better from up there, after all! The blue probably didn't work as well if you were up high. For... some reason. Or Mirriam just had really good eyes.
"IseeitIseeitIseeit!" he cawed excitedly, dancing from foot to foot and throwing himself forward another few islands. "Sharks! Attack! Pirates! Stop! We have sharks!"
He probably couldn't fight the pirates right after fighting to be the shark Queen. But hey, that was what the sharks were for! And... Mirriam and her flying!
"Can you pick up the captain?" he asked her urgently, head craning around to stare up at her. That would be sooo helpful. He'd be at their mercy!

Mirriam's grin was wide enough it practically hurt. When was the last time she'd had -this- much fun? She hoped Teo came to the palace a lot more often in the future! To think she never would have even known about the sharks and pirates that lived right in her very own home if not for him! But this was the best feeling of all...she was useful! "If they surrender, we'll know because they'll fly a white flag!" Mirriam called excitedly down to him. She let go of the curtain rod (not really noticing how it groaned a bit with her weight...she wasn't as small as she once had been) and fluttered towards the ship as well.
"Oh! Oh! Um...I dunno, the Captain is pretty big and I'm not the strong," she said sadly, frowning over at the ship. But there had to be something she could do...somehow none of her spells seemed like they would work, but...oh! "I could take his hat, though!" She looked down at Teo hopefully. "A Pirate Captain's hat is the source of his power. Without it he won't be able to fight because his crew won't take orders from him anymore!" Mirriam was sure this was right. In all the books and comics, the captains always had huge, impressive hats with feathers or skulls or gold trim on them. It was such a simple solution, she was surprised she was the first one to think of it!
Mirriam dove towards the ship, making a bee line for the Captain's hat. He'd never see it coming, not while he was distracted yelling at his crew to fire the canons at the sharks attacking their vessel!

A white flag? That would definitely be easy to see. So as soon as they saw that, Teo would know the pair of them had won at everything! He jumped up and down in excitement and cheered on the sharks.
"They get magic hats?! Wow!" he exclaimed in shock, wondering why Daddy had never told him stories about pirates before. They sounded like the best things ever, except for being bad. "Take it! Take it! Take his hat! If you wear his hat, then you're a Captain too! And you'll control the pirates, and I'll control the pirates, and together we'll rule the seas forever! His words were getting louder and screechier by the second in his excitement.
She could do it! Just taking a hat? He'd never expect that, right? And then maybe the pirates could ride the sharks instead of their dumb blue boat. And that would be the neatest thing ever!

Mirriam nodded. "Yeah, yeah! Captains get the best hats!" Her eyes widened though as Teo went on. Ooh, he was right, though she hadn't realized it before! She would be Captain if she took the hat and wore it herself! Then she'd get respect from all the pirates! Nodding eagerly, Mirriam swooped down and clutched the hat in her claws, before darting quickly away before the Captain could get her back, and placing the hat on her own head.
(If only she really, actually had such a hat! Maybe she could ask Sid about it next time she saw him...she was sure he had a hat like that!) "HA!" she crowed triumphantly, and then turned to grin at the pirates. "Look here, you scallywags! I'm your Captain now, so you gotta listen to us! You're just a bunch of scurvy sea dogs! Now batten down the hatches before I make you walk the plank." She turned to whisper in an aside to Teo, "You gotta speak their language too, to get them to listen."

Oooh, she knew real pirate language. Despite the fact that he hadn't even heard of pirates before that day, Teo was impressed. They sounded so neat! And she had to be, like, a pirate expert or something! All those big words! "Scallywags" and "scurvy" and "batten". He'd have to ask Daddy what some of that meant. He didn't want to interrupt the flow of their adventure for questions.
"Makes sense!" he chirped in agreement, surveying their new "domain". A chain of islands, a huge school of sharks, a ship full of pirates who would soon be riding sharks... pretty good for a day's work. He puffed up with pride. "We did good," he pronounced, a phrase he'd gotten from several of his friends in Corvistowne. You either "did good", or admitted to "your bad". That was what they said.
His stomach rumbled and he stared down at it in surprise. Had they really been playing that long? The adventure felt like it took all day! Forever, even! "Hey. Captains get lunch? I'm kinda hungry."

Of course, the truth of the matter was that Mirriam didn't know what half the words coming out of her mouth even meant. She'd gotten in trouble with that before, repeating phrases that she'd read and then getting a scolding about how some things weren't appropriate to be said to a visiting noble. Because apparently it hadn't meant what she'd thought it did. But this time, the Bat was sure, she wouldn't get in any trouble. It was all just pirate language, and there was no one uppity around to hear it in any case.
Mirriam was never one to care for the finer points of grammar, so even though she wasn't up on Corvistowne lingo, she saw nothing wrong with Teo's exclamation, and squeaked her approval. "We really did. Seaworthy job, Captain Teo!" She did another loop, but her wings were getting a little tired and...now that the Corvid had mentioned it...she was a little hungry.
"Of course they do, silly!" she giggled, landing a bit awkwardly on the tile and folding her wings. "Everyone needs to eat, and Captains get to eat whatever they want and can find at the ports they take over! Unless they're on a ship, because then they just eat whatever is in the galley. That's what a ship's kitchen is called! C'mon!" She nosed at him and then waddled out the door, walking towards the kitchen.

Being a Captain was pretty great, if he could eat wherever he took over. Sharks wouldn't be very tasty, though, would they? Because he didn't like fish all that much and they probably tasted like fish. "We should take over the kitchen," he agreed with a firm nod, flipping his wings closed and tucking them tight against his body. Then he waddled after her, birdy feet ticking lightly on the ground with each step.
The uprooted plant and broken window sill behind them would be a wonderful surprise for one of the staff to find roughly ten minutes later. Considering that there weren't many people who could cause a plant to just climb out of its pot, His Highness would be informed after his meeting.
"I wanna go to a real beach now," he told her wistfully. He'd never been to the Midori before, or the Selkie, or anywhere with real beaches. "I wanna meet some real pirates. Take a real hat. I think that would be really fun."

Mirriam giggled, and just settled for leading Teo there. She knew it was a lot harder to take over the kitchen than a pirate ship. She'd essentially tried once or twice...and gotten in huge trouble for 'disrupting work' and 'destroying property' and 'wasting food'. As if anyone could eat that nasty ground meat stuff anyway. She certainly didn't consider that food.
If the little Bat had thought of it, she would have coaxed the tree back into its pot before the spell wore off...but she'd been too busy worrying about the sharks. And now the plant was just slumped and still and...plant-like again.
Mirriam gave a wistful sigh at Teo's words. "Me too," she confessed, turning around so she could walk backwards and talk to her friend at the same time. "I wanna see ALL the other Realms! But I'm not really allowed to go anywhere except the Capital, and even then I need a babysitter." She pulled a face. After the incident with the Jubjub bird, her escorts were a lot more careful. It was annoying.

"I live in Corvistowne," Teo said absently, not remembering whether he'd told her or not. "It's really different. I don't wanna see them all. Just the neat ones. Like Midori and the beach. Never been to the Capital. Daddy doesn't go there a lot."
He had no idea what work would be involved in taking over the kitchen, or when or how they would do it, but it sounded fun. Not right now, though, because he wanted food. And they might not give him food if he tried and it didn't work? And Daddy might get cross if he messed with the staff, because he'd told him not to do that when he brought him. They had to work. Or something.
"I stay with Mr. Parsley when Daddy's busy. He's a squirrel. He's a fairy, too. Do you have squirrels here? There's no Corvies. It's weird. There's everything but Corvies. But there's Corvies everywhere in Corvistowne."

"Oh! That's cool! I hear that there's lots of secret passages and underground rooms to explore there!" Mirriam said, sounding delighted by the idea. If Teo had already told her this information, she'd managed to forget it over the course of their game. "And I think all of them are neat, in their own ways." But he'd never been to the Capital? How weird! There were all sort of neat things there, and you could see anyone from all over!
"You should go there when you can! They have parks and ice cream and candy and butterflies and flowers and shops and all sorts of other things! Not a lot of trees, though...and the ones they do have are small." Mirriam shrugged. This was, in her opinion, one of the only bad things about the City (well besides the nasty pets some Cards kept). She listened eagerly as Teo explained his living situation.
"Not here in the palace, no. But I've seen Squirrels and Corvies in the Capital! They have everything there!" Mirriam led the bird down a few stairs, hopping from step to step and using her wings to stabilize the jumps. "We're almost there, Teo! Start thinking about what you want for lunch!"
