Whenever they went out, Tosiek found that he had to pay very close attention. It wasn't just because Thalia stole things, though that was part of it; Tosiek had to pay attention because Thalia stole things inadvertently. And some of the shopkeepers had sharp eyes. Together, they were a bad mix. So even though he was listening to the woman talk and though he could even respond to what she said, his eyes were keeping a sharp lookout from behind his black-rimmed glasses and gently steer her away from carts that had owners a bit too attentive or from children with candy. Those were the worst. It was always hard explaining to a raging mother that your friend surely had not stolen the lollipop from the now-squalling baby, and maybe the child had just dropped his candy somewhere? Yes, he definitely avoided those people.

Thalia alternated between talking happily to Tosiek and licking the oversized, rainbow-swirly lollipop that she had gotten from...somewhere. She had the vague impression that a tentacle had grabbed it and then passed it along to the Hair, which was holding it gingerly so as not to get stuck. The Hair hated things getting stuck in it. It had been flat and unresponsive for days after the chewing gum incident. She, however, loved spending time out with Tosiek, be they stealing or eating or just walking along. She was feeling the bad itch to get out of the apartment lately...It wasn't as though Mom or Mama would really notice she were gone. And she would visit! She licked her lolly. She had been working on something with taste. Eating. Oh! The banders. That was right. Trying to alter the composition of their stomach acids to absorb anything. She thought it would be very useful to have banders be little trash eaters, especially around the apartment. If a bander could digest a sofa... "Tosiek," she said, absently, "remind me to pick up some neoloxyn on the way home."

Kaden smirked to himself, dashing smoothly around the corner in a flurry of color and feathers. Quicksand was a pale sandy blur at his side, rumbling with pleasure and jingling thanks to the coin pouch now firmly clutched in his tenacious jaws. Kaden had snagged the purse off a lady as they'd been walking and passed it along to his little companion, and now they were on the move. Clearing space between their old target and themselves so that they could go over their spoils. Rounding the corner, however, he couldn't help but notice their pretty tentacled Corvie mix and her rocker-haired gryphon-skunk companion. He paused in mid trot, eyes sparkling. How awesome were they!? They looked like fun too! And then he realized that he hadn't told Quicksand to heel and that the little beast was running straight... into the Selkie. Crap. Well, this gave him a wonderful way to say hello, didn't it? Moving again, Kaden jogged up to his little friend who was now sneezing in the most indignant way at the Selkie who had been so foolish as to stop in front of him. "Hey! Sorry about that! Don't worry about Quicksand! He won't bite!" He laughed cheerfully and pounced on the bander, snatching the purse and smoothly depositing it into his satchel. If anyone asked, he'd just say that the Bander had taken his wallet from him and that would be that. The double-winged mutt bird flashed a lopsided smile at the couple and readjusted his wings until he was comfortable. Having two sets of wings was a little awkward, after all.

Tosiek didn't squawk when something suddenly collided into him; it wasn't actually unusual, though usually he was tackled by something larger, heftier, and usually screaming obscenities and things about theft being illegal. This time, however, it was a little thump, almost like a small child, and it wasn't yelling anything.
Therefore, Tosiek whirled and gently captured whatever it was that ran into him. Someone was running up and yelling-- a more common occurrence for them-- and Tosiek inspected the sandy coloured bander in something that wasn't quite all the way to surprise despite the fact that he hardly could have been expecting either of these things.
"So, this is yours?" he asked a little shortly. It wasn't that he so greatly minded the encounter, it was more that he wasn't certain how Thalia would react and wild cards tended to make him nervous where she was concerned.

It was like something out of a wonderful dream. She had just been thinking about experimenting on banders and poof, there one was! As if by magic. Such a pretty sandy color, too! Like a little desert rat. It would be the cutest trash disposal unit ever.
Her brief upwelling of joy was quickly squashed, however, when the bander was revealed to have an owner. It was so much trickier to snatch banders off people than it was to just shove a wild one into a knapsack and bolt. This might require some deft maneuvering and a lot of lying. But perhaps a direct approach was best used first.
Its owner was a birdie! Some type of Corvie, maybe, with an interesting color blend. Thalia moved her lollypop out of the way and smiled cheerfully at him, waggling a tentacle in greeting. "Hey," she said. "Would you be willing to let me buy your bander?"

Kaden's feathers fluffed up ever so slightly as his beloved bander was snatched up by the gryphon-esque bird-skunk and he squawk-chirped nervously. "Yeah, he's mine. Sorry 'bout 'im running into you like that... We were playing keep away." The bird continued to grin, lying through his smiling beak.
And then the pretty Corvie woman with the fancy tentacles spoke up, waving a tentacle and being utterly adorable. Except that she was asking for Quicksand and Kaden knew exactly what a Corvie might intend to do with his beloved companion.
"Ah, I'm real sorry but I'll haveta pass on that. Quicksand and I are a team, y'know? Ever since I can remember, I can't rightfully sell 'im."
Caught in Tosiek's grip, Quickand flailed his little legs and grumbled deeply. He did not like being stuck and he sneezed angrily a couple of times to prove his disgruntled point.

Tosiek's wings flared out to try and keep his balance when the bander squirmed; he wasn't that used to balancing just on his skunk hindquarters. A few cautious flaps-- though the first one was a trifle erratic-- and he was balanced again, though his talons tightened warningly around the small creature. He was careful to not pierce skin; that would be an unwise move in their 'negotiations'.
He glanced over at Thalia with amusement and something close to, but not quite, exasperation. It seemed she had a new thought in her head. "Thalia, we can go buy you a bander if you'd like," he pointed out logically. "Rather than try to buy someone's pet." There was, of course, also the bander he had been given from his mother, though he hadn't bothered to pick it up yet. He wasn't certain the skunk would approve of what would almost definitely happen to the thing if it came home with him.

Tosiek had a point but not exactly. The point was that she wanted this bander. She glanced down at his sandy little self—Quicksand, the bird had called it—and gave a little sigh of regret. Her tentacles itched to grab it and carry it off. But alas; not today, apparently. She tried to look at it logically: she understood about bander teams. She and Monty were a team, after all. A girl and her deranged, homicidal bander. If anyone tried to poach Monty there would be very bad things happening all over the place.
Point to Tosiek, then.
“I suppose,” she said, a little mournfully, glancing at what would have been a wonderful experiment. Little bander didn’t look happy to be in a Tosiek-cuddle. Beh! Bander was lucky. She turned to the birdie, mood perking up again. “Well, if you find any strays wandering about, send them my way, yeah? I give them good homes.”
And extra limbs. But everyone needed extra limbs. She was doing a service to bander-kind.

Quicksand did not like this! Not at all! He was being bird-handled and squished and restrained! The bander grumbled wildly, and sneezed a couple more times to prove just how displeased he was. Quicksand wasn't about to submit, even if he did figure out that squirming was not fun.
Kaden simply smiled ruefully at his little friends displeasure, wishing he could free him from the skunk-gryph's grip but not sure whether or not the other male might be annoyed by this decision. So he waited with semi-patience, struggling not to make too much of a fuss while still waiting expectantly for his friend to be released.
"Gettin' your own companion might be the best bet, but I'll be up for keeping tabs on strays. They need a good place to go." Not that he 100% trusted any Corvie with a stray of any sort, but this girl didn't seem to be the horrendously immoral sort. He cocked his head to the side, beaming at the couple. "Mind if I have my pal back, then? We can even help you fish out your own trouble maker, if you'd like?"

"You're making this harder on me," Tosiek growled under his breath to the bander which would, of course, do nothing useful. Banders, as far as he could tell, really weren't that smart and were, for the most part, little more than annoyances. Thalia, as evidenced previously in their conversation, loved them. Tosiek wasn't entirely certain where that came from, especially since he'd met the horrid little creature they called Monty. He stared down at Quicksand and carefully kept his disgust hidden.
He couldn't have a real issue with banders, however, because Thalia liked them so much. So he had fought down his aversion to them so he could still stand them, but he certainly wasn't going to offer to share his bed with Monty. Ever.
"To what troublemaker of ours are you referring?" he asked as he debated about letting the thing go. He dropped down to set the bander on the ground and hold it there for a moment with his talons, just a momentary warning that he knew would do nothing because-- fundamentally-- banders were stupid. Still, he released it for its owner and would leave it be unless it decided to make another move against him. Or at him.
