Today was an absolutely wretched day to be outside. Not only was it cold but it was sunny, too! How was this possible?! It was just the end of winter, and the winds from the north were still bringing cold air to the courts. Heilyn was used to warm and muggy, this dry coldness didn't really appeal to her at all. She put a tiny bit of water into the palm of her hand and snuffed it up her nose. It was strange to many, but with the dryness she wasn't accustom to, it was a necessary action she had to take to prevent her nose from bleeding. Ah well, she thought, closing the window, I have paperwork to do anyway. Though she had to smile at her beloved Seth playing with their more rambunctious children in the garden. She turned from the window to her desk. There was Mikhael. Inside. She really wished he would at least exercise more, but in a way she actually felt sorry for the boy. Seth put a lot of stress on him... "Hey," she said, touching a tip of his ear with a finger, her expression soft, "I'm going to call a servant to bring me something to drink. Would you like me to get you anything?"

It was one of those days that Mikael didn't mind having to wear his mask when at home. Keeping the thing on kept the condensation of his breath and recycled it, keeping him from having the dry nose that his mother suffered from. Of course, dry noses wasn't the foremost thing on Mikael's mind as he hunkered over some article of homework. Intently, he made his letters neatly upon paper with his quill firmly tucked between his fingers. When the contact was made with his ear, it merely gave a reflexive twitch to show his mild surprise, head quickly turning to make eye contact with his mother whom he'd forgotten was even there. He certainly lost track of the world when he was busy. "Oh.. yeah. Maybe some apple cider? It's too cold outside for anything else, in my opinion. Thanks mom." He didn't have to tell her to make sure it wasn't too hot. With his having to drink it through a straw, if it was of an uncomfortable temperature he'd be sure to scald his mouth badly. But Heilyn knew that; as paranoid and mothering as she was. For now though, he needed to finish his homework. He'd had to bring it with him to make sure it was done before the beginning of the week; it wouldn't do to have excess homework then have to go to work that day as well. This week was actually the first chance he'd been able to come home and tell them of the news. He hadn't had the time to mention it yet, of course. There were just so many things going on, and homework to do. Mikael had relented to mentioning it whenever he had some time to breathe. And so he looked down at the finished paper. He hadn't realized he'd finished it until the canine hybrid found himself signing it with his name. Leaning back and finding a rag to wipe the ink stains from his fingers, he frowned thoughtfully. "Sorry about bringing schoolwork home with me. I just need to get it done before the week ends."(*shrieks and rips her eyes out* Don't quote Nako's Stupid DX *fixes it*)

But Satra knew that; as paranoid and mothering as she was. [...Nako, I freaking love it when you do that. XDD ] Heilyn shook her head. "That's like me apologizing for having to do paperwork while you come back to visit. Don't worry about it," she smiled softly, running a few fingers through the small patch of blue mohawk he inherited from his father. She rang for a servant and turned back to her son. "You gonna take a break soon?" she asked, unsure if he was done or not. If he was on a roll, she sure as hell wasn't going to interrupt that. It looked like it, as he was wiping his fingers off, but it never hurt to ask. Part of her felt a need to talk to him. She was worried that Seth's constant badgering of the boy would make him somewhat alienated from her as well.

((Don't pick on the Nako XD ))
Mikael didn't answer at first, merely wiping his fingers thoughtfully as he continued his blank stare at the paper. After a breath, he nodded. "...Yah, I can step away from it." He had other homework to do, surely, but it was a good stopping point between subjects. After all, he had some things he wanted to talk about to his mother.. but then he considered something. The way she had asked about his progress made him look up.
"What's up?" His head tilted to the side, regarding his mother curiously. Of course he had things -he- wanted to talk about, but what was on the woman's mind? With all the craziness of job hunting and getting into school, he really hadn't had the time to talk to either of his family members... other than the ultimatum that his father had come up with. All he had to do now was tell his parents the outcome of that.

[ <33 You know I love you, dear. ]
A servant came to the door very soon after the boy gave his answer. Heilyn gave the man orders for their drinks - two ciders, with the one for Heilyn laced with alcohol and the virgin beverage a bit cooler than the other - the servant bowed and skittered off. Closing the door behind her, she walked to the couch closest to the desk where Mikael worked.
"I just felt now would be a good time to talk, if you're up to it. You've been working really hard lately, so I just wanted to know if anything new was happening with you lately. Just keeping in touch." Heilyn wouldn't say it outright, but she was incredibly happy that the boy was looking for a job rather than mooching off her money for school. She had plenty to spare, of course, but she would've loathed for any of the children under her care to turn out like some of the children raised by nobles.

Oh, so she was probing? Had he not found a job yet, he might have been a bit put on the spot, so she was right to tread lightly on the subject. With good news up his sleeve though, he couldn't help but give an unseen grin and let his tail beat a steady rhythm on the chair he sat on.
"Yes, you could say things have been happening." Keeping his tone conversational and not giving anything away, he began the meticulous cleaning of his writing utensil as he spoke. "I'd been really busy with school and getting things set up, but I spotted an ad in town in Esterberry for a job. Well, it was the perfect opportunity, really. It's not in Esterberry, but it's still close. I went and applied, and well... I got the job." He then paused, grinning so hard that his mask creaked, and unable to suppress a chuckle. Such a childish game, but he wished to coax his mother into the excited questions that he so wished to answer.

Heilyn felt hopeful when the boy's tail began to beat gently against the chair. That was definitely a good sign. There was an edge to Mikael's voice that made Heilyn smirk. She did so love good news. She draped her arms over and rested her chin on the arm of the chair as she listened to him speak.
"Are you going to tell me what the job is or are you going to let me wonder?" she asked with a smirk. She'd played the game of politics years before he was even born, but she went along with it. If it was something she wouldn't approve of, Mikael wouldn't've brought it up. Unless he's leaving... the paranoia spoke up. She shook it off. Not now...
He's probably leaving the family for some piece of trash loser boyfriend. Good riddance anyway. Don't take it hard, Master. There's one in every family,[/b] piped up a voice in her mind. Heilyn kept her face completely pleasant for Mikael, ignoring her weapon. It hated 10s, but never explained to Heilyn why. She didn't want to think what things would be like when the weapon got an actual form.

It was so hard to goad her; the smirk on his mother's face told that she was not riled by his drawing out of the news. Well, that was to be expected. Nevertheless, the young man was already about to wag his tail right off his hind quarters. That's one thing that would always give him away; that blasted coyote tail.
"I.. I got a job in the Court of Spades as a secretary! Don't you want to know who? Oh I'll tell you who, the Queen herself! I don't know whether I'm lucky or just insane. A secretary for the -Queen-, mom! And they let -me- do it.. I mean, I'm.. well, look at me!" A long spindly finger jabbed emphatically at the number on his chest. "Now, don't get too excited though; I don't know if this Court business if for me for the long haul, but it's really good experience, and anybody who is anybody has to deal with the Courts at some point and time so this is -great- experience for me."
Finally the lad sucked in a great breath, for he had said all that on only a few lungfulls of air. Then, as quickly as he'd brightened up, the lad... seemed to deflate a bit. "I.. just wanted to tell you first, yanno? I'm still not sure what dad will think.. especially about being.. a secretary. But hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere, right, and I'm pretty much the most important secretary in the whole Court! Yeah..." Mikael was talking himself up again, reaffirming things to himself, yet at the same time looking with pleading eyes toward his mother. If she didn't approve, there wouldn't be an icicle's chance in Midori for Seth to approve.

Slowly a smile crept across her face. It was a genuine smile, one that typically only her family and closest friends ever saw.
"Mikael, that's wonderful," she said getting up to put a hand on his shoulder. She rolled her eyes and shook her head, "And never mind your father. He should be proud of you. You know him. His always had strange expectations of you. But you're now a working member of a court --both his and yours-- that is working to rebuild itself."
It was certainly a start. Heilyn always felt Seth's constant goading Mikael into being a Seth Jr. was rather unfair. This way Mikael can find his own way to becoming a useful member of society instead of being guilted away from his true potential by some strange preconceived notion of manliness.

Though the sideways, bat-esque grin on his face was obscured by his mask, no doubt his mother would understand the joy conveyed by the upright stance of his ears and the steady rhythm of his coyote tail. "Yeah... you know, you're absolutely right. I mean.. why would he -not- be proud? I'm working in the Courts! The Court of Spades! Not everyone can say that."
He exhaled deeply, as if shedding away that great burden that had been building up on his chest. Surely his father would find absolutely nothing wrong with his new job. In fact, Mikael could honestly say that he felt better about the whole situation.
Looking up to his mother, the look in his eyes spoke of the gratitude he felt for the woman's support more than any words could. "I just hope to make both of you proud."
