It was rainy; not exactly tourist weather on the Midori Beach... Not that many tourists visited Zuberi's side of town. Foreigners were typically drawn to the larger cities, so the smaller more traditional villages. To tell the truth though, that suited this particular Midori squirrel just fine. Even though it was overcast and rain was pouring down, it had cooled the hot midday down and made for a fine time for fishing. Many a small fishing canoe would be out on the main waters, but Zuberi preferred a particular spot near her favorite cove.
It was a light drizzle, and Zuberi hardly felt the need to shield herself from it as she threw her baited bone hook over the edge of her canoe. It would probably not take long to catch more than enough fish for herself, and possibly a little extra. Now, with her line set, and wooden wedge which the string was attached now firmly set in a special niche on the back of the boat, she sat back and waited for the line to grow taught.
((Boring, I know XD I just had this situation in my head and wanted to get it out. I'd love if someone would take on the challenge though.))

Zuberi jumped awake at the tugging on her line. Groggily, she kept a hold of it as best as her webbed claws could. She really shouldn't have fallen asleep like that, but with the heavy feel of the air and the warmth of the sun.. it was hard to resist. It took a bit of fumbling before she regained a firm grasp on the fishing pole enough to actually pull the fish in. The Midori would be happy with just about anything as long as it wasn't shark; there wasn't much that was edible on the creatures unless you aged it for months prior to eating. Though she loved her pickled and aged meats just as much as any in her family did, shark wasn't particularly her favorite.
Finally, the tired fish was dragged aboard, and dexterous and schooled paws were quick to pull the hook from its mouth before tossing it into the wicker basket she had brought along. Oh.. but what time was it? Eyes still heavy with sleep, she groggily assessed the position of the sun. By the look of it, she'd only nodded off for half an hour at most. Why was she so tired today? It just wasn't like her to fall asleep in the canoe like that... She was lucky not to be swept off into the wide open ocean for such foolishness. That thought actually shook her up a bit. Maybe life in the Capital had made her... lazy.. and not in the typical Midori way.
The truth was more along the lines that she had so much on her mind recently. With the strange things that had been happening to her, she'd made a note to seclude herself slightly from the other people. It was uncommon for her to want solitude from her family, but everyone knew why, even if Zuberi herself wouldn't acknowledge it. With her growing older, old ghosts were coming to haunt her, and it all came in quite a rush after the resident Priestess died. Now, there was no one at all to turn to who would understand these... strange powers. The squirrel frowned, rubbing her palms together with a bit of distaste. These paws... had proven to be able to do very bad things. Would nothing come from her abilities but pain and suffering? It wasn't a thing that Zuberi cared to face, and like a coward she ignored them. When she'd find the courage to face them was unknown to anyone at that moment, unless that damned Priestess took that knowledge with her to the next life, and Zuberi would bet she probably did.
The sudden renewed flapping of her catch brought her out of the daze she'd suddenly put herself under, and she tried to rid herself of that heavy feeling on her head with a rough shake. No.. that only made her head hurt. A sigh, and the Midori rubbed her temples with the pads of her clawed fingers. It was too beautiful an evening to be doting on bad things. Today, she'd try to be happy... happy and alone. It seemed shaking off the gloom would be a bit harder than she thought. Indignantly, she picked up her oar and started back to the shore.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Years pass, and the world changes. Some things though, they are as predictable as the coming and going of seasons. A familiar style of boat once again floats in the waters, but a completely new creaure fishes within it. Zuberi had changed in so many ways. She'd reached goals she thought she never would as she went down the path laid out for her, learned things and experienced wonders few people did.
But in Midori she would stay, fishing as she had years and years ago.
There was a tug on the hook, and the squirrel braced herself in the canoe, hauling the fish onto her boat with practiced ease. This was no special fishing trip; merely a trip to the sea to catch something fresh for dinner. She was losing her taste for sideways walkers and would welcome a fish filet fried on her wood stove. The fish secured, Zuberi turned her boat about and headed back for shore.
